I think there are two things going on here: #1) When travelling ANYWHERE very far away, there is a sense of alienation that can hit you. This is especially the case if you get lost, or things like that, things that trigger feelings of insecurity and danger. It's pretty much guaranteed imo if you don't know the language for a country you will experience heavy feelings of alienation. I found France a lot more alienating than UK for this very simple reason, but it's not the fault of the country by any means. #2) Paris really IS a fucking shithole. To be fair, a lot of major/capitol cities in Western Europe are. For #2 if this is why people find it upsetting, I'd heavily encourage going to small towns in France. When I was in UK and France, the best places by far were the small towns and rural areas, the big cities sucked ass without fail. In France... it's been 20+ years, but I'd recommend the Brittany region in general, but Dinan in particular. It's a beautiful smallish but still fair sized town with roman aqueducts, lots of old, guild-style medieval buildings/houses, etc. The French Alps region is beautiful, too. And Avignon is a very historical but still smallish town with stuff to sightsee, and on top of that you get to experience the mistral.

The thing I remember is the astounding number of very pushy beggars, which was quite surprising as in my experience in the UK pushy beggars seem to catch the attention of the police and tend disappear from the area quickly. The beggars that stick around tend to be the less obtrusive ones who stay by the sides of the street or play music on something simple.
@crowe69612 жыл бұрын
In my area in the US, beggars that get overly pushy get told to f*** the f*** off. If they keep it up, they're likely to run into real trouble. On the other hand, the local network of churches, charities, shelters, and food banks is quite generous and has probably saved countless lives. There's a right way and a wrong way to go about getting help if you're dead broke, but wise men know that it's better to help someone while they're down and get them back on their feet so they can be an upstanding member of society rather than let them slip into addiction, untreated psychological problems, and ultimately become a greater danger to themselves and others.
@armind45552 жыл бұрын
On the topic of pushy beggars. You'll see some standing around in busy streets with clipboards stopping people. Do not stop, just give a "Je ne parle pas français" in passing. Some are legit, some will try to scam you, others act as a distraction for pickpockets proper.

@@crowe6961Most homeless people in the US refuse to get help for no reason, it aggravates me sometimes, Homeless in the US actually make quite a lot just begging, in a big city like NYC an average begged could make hundreds a day, the ones that are still on the street are typically addicts that need serious help, which is why you never give money directly to beggars, offer to get them food or a drink or else they might use your money for drugs or alcohol.

The pickpocket stuff is very true, if you come as a tourist be careful. The tourists spots are nice though, if you like old churches and this kind of stuff. A person denying being one is surely enough already a good indicator as, trust me, they don't really hide, skinheads, for exemple. Wouldn't call face tattoos of swastikas, etc.... the perfect stealth tactic. And the right mostly initiating debates, as you might have already seen, is already a good indicator, fascists, in my experience, do not bother, they will insult you, slap you, and you won't have an overall good day trying to debate and explain your points. i find that the left, ironically known for their beliefs of "everyone united, no judgement, and no putting in the same basket", weirdly put all right wingers, weither they are soft, centrist, or hardcore, in the same basket, i mean surely there are parts of the right that are fascists, but trust me, the case where ive seen the most, is in the left, which ive seen my family included in. but it's funny that both sides just throw the F word (not the homophobic one) at each other, people really start to feel indifferent to the word, as everyone is nowadays. And that, my friend, is a really bad thing. See it like the kid and the wolf, days and days of false alarms, and when there is an actual danger, well, nobody believes it anymore. Truly a risky dance. and besides, speaking of the left, we could talk about stalin, lenin, che gevara, mao zedong, pol pot, those aren't good looks at all. I might remind that pol pot, a hardcore communist, putted muslims in camps, enslaved them, and feed them pork, so truly, racism has no political oppinions. There are no good look, whether you're from the right, or the left, both should be ashamed of their past, and stop insulting each other names, and try to debate peacefully with no names callings, but i guess it would be very hard to proceed to, wishing you a good day/evening.

What's so funny in France is when you talk about violence and insecurity, either everyone agrees with you or is in complete denial. Then when you talk more, the people in denial will reveal you that they actually are shitting in their pants when they have to walk alone at night, go accross some streets or if they just see some communities. What's also so funny is to see the people who would have called you a fascist before for asking for more order in the streets are now saying the same facts as you, but will still call fascists the people who want more order. We deserve the shit we're getting.

When you know the safe spot, where to go without getting bothered, how to recognize who's friend, who's looking for trouble. Go for it. But for real the only ones who ones are the ones living near these cities. Andnone are the same. Really it's a call to be level headed, recongise the little danger, and avoid getting yourself in trouble because you oberestimated your abilities. But i'm not in that part of the country, only went there once, so i can't tell you exactly where to go and what to take, but try to stay the less ammount possible in here than necessary.
@milesfortis18782 жыл бұрын
Marseille is a big place, it is not that bad everywhere. I would suggest you to stay in the south of the city (the richest part), and to not go out at night in certain places. Dress casualy (don't show expensiv stuff) and try not to own a bike, it will get stolen at one point. I know a lot of people that live there and never have any problems, but I also know people that had troubles... If you have to go to Marseille with low economy and have to rent a cheap appartment in the north, that is not a very good idea. Marseille has the poorest disctrict of the country. Anyway, the headquarter of Légion Étrangère is not in Marseille but in Aubagne. It's close enough, but very much safer.

It's not as bad as people describe it, however there are areas where the life is rough, just ask the locals and they'll tell you which place to avoid. Marseille is known for its crimes, but it's also known for how nice and joyful the locals are. Most people telling you about Marseille as if it was the French Memphis have barely ever been there, and most of them don't live in cities to begin with. They will literally just spread literal memes on the city and eventually believe them fully.
