In general, peelers are a great invention. So many experienced people can do great peeling-work with a simple knife. But if i use a knife instead of a peeler, my potatos for example are having much character afterwards with all their edges and corners and they loose so much material together with the peel and are getting pretty small in the process. Who ever invented the first peeler: you are a hero! Edit: what a sheeshy episode! beware of squirting tomatos and dripping lemons. This kitchen is boiling hot today - even without the oven!

Leaving a bit of the pith on lemon peelings is pretty good if you plan on candying the peels. The bitterness cuts the sweetness and gives the flavor some depth.

Wow I've tried none of these peelers, but I had used a model similar to that apple peeler because we'd make a lot of Waldorf Salad where I work. I can tell you that those things are in fact a pain in the ass, and sometimes literally physically painful, to use. It may have been ours was a bit old though. My go-to peeler is a nice little Victorinox peeler. It's slim, it's sleek, it has the serrated double-sided blade with the eye remover which functions but isn't super great, I use it most often to dig bad spots out of cucumber. Design-wise it's a lot like the orange peeler but ever more sleek and it just zips through almost anything. I think the toughest thing I've used it on was Jicama and it did quite well until you get to the base of it where the skin gets quite thick and waxy, so just lop off the ends first with a knife and you're golden. Those things are just like 10 bucks and I'm sure they're probably everywhere. Personally I've not been a fan of perpendicular style peelers or peelers with big chonkers of a handle, so this Victorinox one suits me quite well, so I'd probably like the orange boi too.

Great fun! I was hoping you'd test the Zebra brand peeler from Thailand. I think OXO borrowed their design because it works so well and is cheap to manufacture. They also make one specifically for peeling mangos. No Sheeeesh for looks, but definitely for how well they work and how cheap they are.

I still have my echo peeler from the 70's simple is best there made of stainless steel and they never ware out. the best part they still make them and there cheap at 8.00 to 10.00 bucks . I have an Oxo pro peeler and I still use the echo.

I'd say the apple peeler and the OxO peeler... But the apple one is actually pretty specialized... if I was, say, baking an apple pie every day or something, I'd call it a lifesaver, but otherwise....
