@Danyul I feel like people entirely miss the point. Japan likes to mix things together that seem impossible. Onimai is the mix of obscene and wholesome. It shouldn't be possible. They pull it off amazingly well. It's very Japanese. I think there are a lot of western values that make no sense. The show is often judged unfairly because of some western values that are just nonsense.

"You'd think an anime like this would be sexual in nature but I found it isn't really like that at all." My god, thank you. So many people writing the show off as nothing but perv bait because of the more fanservice-y scenes. I feel like that's a problem with some anime in general. People see a few specific scenes and assume the whole show is like that and assume it's just horny shit and there's nothing of value.

To be fair that's kind of the anime's fault. They decided to up the jiggle to ludicrous proportions when the manga, from what I've seen at least, is fairly normal with it. Now that is going to be what all of the most shared clips are because good as the rest of the show is it's not really that 'clickbait' level clippable. Of course because of that it's going to be viewed as some kind of Ecchi fanservice show and casual viewers will look at the rest of it with that in mind. I mean c'mon my guy, there are *so goddamn many* anime that come out *every season* and half of them are either Isekai, cute girls do X, or "I Can't Believe It's Not Hentai" , it's not exactly a bad call to assume the one about a guy getting turned into a little girl known for its super well animated bouncing booba might be mostly horny bait.

It had too much fanservice (even though mahiro consistently did the "right" choices to keep it wholesome overall just the sheer quantity gets kind of annoying) It doesn't ruin the show and mahiro is surprisingly chill but they could've kept some of the lolis at least from being in constant fanservice Also the lolis were the worst part of the show anyways so they could've kept them out from a lot of scenes overall The sibling relationship and kaede were great but I feel like the show mostly went down after mahiro went to school despite having a pretty good ending

The funny thing about Kaede is that they actually dialed her up a ton in the anime, both physically (chest size) and in terms of make up. I assume it was done mostly because in the manga, Mahiro pretty much reacts to Kaede exactly as he does in the anime, but because she looks relatively normal, it doesn't fully compute that she's supposed to be this intimidating (to Mahiro) gyaru type character. That's something the anime does really well imo - the manga and the anime both have the same wholesome feel, but the manga is more constant feel good without too many "spikes" in presentation so to speak. The anime plays up the "most important" bits to create a bit more impact. The key scene that got me hooked on the story as a whole (the flashback during their run and the accompanying monologue) and that, in my opinion, communicates "the point" of the story best, gets a lot more focus by being sort of a climax scene with an atmosphere, whereas in the manga, it's a very understated bit that, depending on the translation, can fall to the wayside without much impact at all. That's not to say the manga is worse - I personally think it's a very comfortable read because of the way it is - but I think the anime did a great job adapting the material for its 24 minutes per episode format. Onimai is some of the best slice-of-life I've seen in a while for a couple reasons, some more personal than others. I completely avoid discussions of it online though, because they get... kinda rough. I really mostly keep to myself with it, because I'm having too much of a good time with it to ruin it with arguments.
@playererror4044 Жыл бұрын
Technically the anime changes a lot of the characters looks in subtle ways, usually for the better. Kaede's sister for example dresses a lot more butch in the show compared to how she looks in the Manga and it conveys that side of her a lot stronger then the original.

It is interesting to me that studio BIND is responsible for animation that covers topics of "recovering" from degeneracy, social anxiety, abuse, and developing a healthier world view and behavior over time. The story of ONIMAI is a bit sillier, and the transformation really is a completely unexplained or unexplored, but it really is very wholesome. I have been sincerely impressed with the quality of BIND's work. I loved Mushoku Tensei, I loved the production quality, I loved that it didn't waste my time with overdone intro-outro stuff, just the quiet songs with actual story happening at the beginning was really nice in my honest opinion. And while the main character of MT is obviously still perverted, he is legitimately trying to be a better person as he grows in the new world and the "tropes" actually have reasons for existing instead of just kind of 'being there' to check a box for "moe content" that so many shows seem to do. Realizing that OniMai is BIND production work makes a lot more things click, especially the quality of the art and character depictions and interactions.
@danyul- Жыл бұрын
Will be interesting to see if they continue to make these kinds of anime going forward or if it's just a coincidence with them only having done these 2
@Nodjia Жыл бұрын
@@danyul- yeah. I feel like the studio can apply a strong level of quality to anything they touch. But honestly, what I think I notice about their work is that they don't seem to go for 'cheap' junk tropes, they lean into their content with a more mature tone. Onimai very easily could have had a way more degenerate tone, but they keep the tone respectful and focused instead of going for cheap "oh look how close we can get to lewd stuff". It's like with mushoku, a lot of studios would turn a lot of situations into lewd jokes, while BIND immediately redirects things to be about damage to relationships or repercussions of making choices thoughtlessly. The content becomes more about thoughtfulness and understanding than the 'specifics' of the situation. A good example is where many shows have some low quality joke about seeing a girls panties and her getting upset, mushoku turns the main characters embarrassing 'treasure' from Roxy into a story about how sometimes anything that reminds us of our relationships can be treasured, even if it's not entirely appropriate, whether it's a headband from your brother or panties, both are reminders that you care about someone.

i dunno if you will read this. but you gained another sub. One thing i have to admit, after literally finishing onimai a few minutes ago, is that. the series is fairly realistic in despicting someone who, quite (literally) gave up on life. someone who was a Hikkikomori to the extreme of not knowing where his parents went, and only lives with his sister. And even having that one familiar that cares about him, you can really tell that Mahiro was at the edge of suicide at any moment if it wasnt for his sister. Then, things started to change around, having to take care for himself, for his look, being careful with his (new) fragile body, adapting to new clothes and ways of acting around, and even leaving his home after just a while. You can question the sister way of getting him out of his room, yes, but you can´t deny that, technically, saved his brother. and gave him up, not only a new chance to live, but also a new way to see things, live, adapt, and most important, live a moment of his live that he lost becouse of loneliness and being a Hikkikomori. he his lucky to have such a caring sister that not only guided him, but also helped him out when he needed. and he showed his grattituded later, then he gained friends, started Elementary school again becouse he is 14-15 again. an so. The relationship of brothers between Mahiro and Mihari is probably the most wholesome i saw in anime in A LONG TIME. and that is a lot coming from a "ECHHI" series/manga, becouse in other ones like Date a live, to love ru, Highschool XDxD and more the "siblings" relationship always ends in some way of incest in one way or another. but, here is the complete opposite. two "sisters" now, who truly love and care for eachother.

This is one of my top anime of the season. The wholesomeness of it makes it a great "feel good" show. At episode 2, I realized that, if not for the gender bend premise, this show could easily have been just a coming of age story of a tomboy going through puberty, though that would remove some of the gags. It deals with the developments girls go through accurately and sensitively.

Considering that there are many young men in Japan who are wasting away living as shut-ins aka hikikomori, and their aging parents desperately trying to help their sons, it comes as no surprise that Onimai tries to tackle this societal problem. And I think Onimai has done it wonderfully. I hope that people who are struggling with living as shut-ins can find meaning and purpose after watching Onimai.

I absolutely love this anime!! I thought it was going to be the typical pervy one full of fanservice, but I was very pleasently surprised!! Any "awkward" shots are taken in an unforced natural setting without being exaggerated, the relationship between the siblings is really cute and wholesome, the friendship she develops in her quartet is fantastic, Mahiru is very respectful of her new friends and at the same time interracts with them on a very natural level when there are situations that other animes would dive head first into to perv out. Even little things I found really good, like they buy swimsuits, and I thought we would get the typical beach episode full of sexy shots, but it never happened, and it didn't feel missing at all, or things like when she gets her first period, it's brought up as being something natural that happens, she sorts herself out nthanks to her sister, and that's it, no stupid going into it in weird ways. Even subtle things like the length of the skirts for the girls at school, which was realistic, totally non pervy, and they look cute in their uniforms. The last episode is very much a soul search episode which was very good, and it wasn't taken lightly or haphazardly. It's really just a beautiful SOL with a big twist, that adds in a coming of age aspect by changing Mahiru's age as well as sex. I can't wait for a second season, and I hope it keeps with the reliance on storytelling and the wholesome siblingship and friendship they all have.

For me it was Onimai and that 80k gold isekai. For Onimai getting past the loli fan service took a little work but was worth it and for the isekai getting past a boring episode 1+2 was worth it. Onimai is definitely a top 10 SOL, perhaps the best SOL this year

A lot of stuff I was looking forward to most this season ended up with issues so I'm glad this was able to fill a bit of a void in that regard. BOFURI and Kubo got hit with delays and as a novel reader for Angel Next Door, I can't say the adaptation was very good. So ONIMAI being good was a welcome surprise.

I liked this show and really hope a second season is on the way (and I am fucking glad that you have the voice you do as it makes me, another male, liking this show feel much less awkward) But surely after a WHOLE YEAR as a girl (for the most part) a missing person case about the brother (still as a male) would have been filed to the police. Also what if the parents appeared?
