Online harassment is a major problem, but it’s rarely prosecuted. If only we’d been warned about this in the early days of the internet.

Glenna Smith It’s because of the “congratulations on your white penis” line probably and maybe that he talked about Anita Sarkeesian and Brianna Wu (that complaint is dumb) I honestly didn’t like the white penis line either because he carried that attitude into the rest of the video even though there is this thing called swatting where people will get a swat team to raid your house and there are a ton of videos of it happening to white guys on live-streams and stories of it happening to white guys. I’ve also heard of a youtuber having his address leaked and a hit put out on him, threats made so a youtuber wouldn’t be allowed to go to a convention he was invited to, a youtuber’s sex tape was leaked. All white guys. So I understand the annoyance and anger some people have when John Oliver seems to spin this as an issue that doesn’t effect white guys. You could say that’s not what he meant by that “white penis” line and it was just a joke which is fair but the combination of that line and not addressing the points I brought up sends the message that it doesn’t/can’t effect them in any serious way. What will help this issue get better is more victims of online harassment feeling safe, comfortable and confident enough to speak out about it and share their troubling stories. John Oliver’s piece doesn’t do that for a large percentage of the US population and instead makes the situation worse. But don’t get me wrong the issues and stories he did address were important and should be talked about so I didn’t hate the video.

I ended up deleting all my internet presence and leaving the country for a few years to get away from them as it was escalating (and they found out about that too). They knew a lot and even called my friends to tell them to warn me etc. Parents and police thought it was a joke. The police said the percentage of people who act on threats they make online is so low and that it was likely someone I knew who had access to my computer who was doing it, not someone actually online. That's it! I still worry a bit and never post (that was 8 years ago- 10 since it began). Not to say something negative about parents and/or police, but that is serious if they are stalking you and even contacting you via your friends. Harassing via messages is bad in itself, but tracking you and threatening you via your friends? That is seriously messed up. It's shocking how often women get screwed over by nude pics compared to men. Also, newsflash for those who are denigrating the women in this video: whenever you find yourself defending the guy who is threatening rape and murder and publicly posting the woman's address, you seriously need to reevaluate your life.

Jasper Banks Given the overwhelming amount of evidence towards one gender over another, I think it's safe to call it a women's issue. There's probably a couple of guys out there that have been shamed for dick pics but the level and quantity of shame is not nearly the same as what women have to deal with.

@brainwasher98768 жыл бұрын
Jasper Banks Did you...did you actually read your source? The study itself points to the fact that women get sexually harassed almost twice as often as men do on the internet. Disseminating nude pictures without permission and threatening sexual violence is the very definition of sexual harassment.
@brainwasher98768 жыл бұрын
Jasper Banks Men send nude photos (or more commonly dick pics) to their significant others all the time, but they rarely--if ever--get terrorized for it following a break-up. It's a free country and people should be able to do what they want without being publicly shamed for it. Your first paragraph would require a response several paragraphs long so I can't be bothered to address it. All I have to say is try to look at it from a woman's perspective for a bit, and look up what gamergate is. Even if we discount threatening sexual violence as somehow just violence and not sexual harassment in any way, then the study still shows women being sexually harassed almost twice as much as men on the internet. If that doesn't scream "gender issue" to you then nothing will.

Sam Ottenbreit that was long. Okay so you just basically explained common knowledge to me, so thanks for stating the obvious. But the thing is Anita wasn't the only woman mentioned here was she? Yet so many people, including you Monseiur, are kinda preoccupied with her. Which is what I'm trying to say. She was in this video for what? 5 minutes? But instead of acknowledging the real problem "haters" just kinda decided to focus on her. You can explain the hows and whys but none of that will make it right. I know that you mentioned that too (in brackets, if I may add) but basically your comment is redundant.
@wafflerofl8917 жыл бұрын
Sandy Hardstone I was going to leave it alone but... Haters focused on her because the subject itself (Online Harassment) is common knowledge to them. Most people who hate Anita are feminists or people who feel slighted by the way she takes advantage of real problems that women have to make a profit. Anita is amongst the people who are subjected to it yes, but other people included in John Oliver's segment are for the most part innocents who suffered unjustly. Anita isn't quite an unjustly hated individual, of course people are going to think: "Why is she being being lumped in with these innocents?" It's the feeling of injustice that causes people to have a kneejerk reaction, they GET the point, but they don't believe that Anita IS as good of a point as others. aaannndd that'll be it for anything I have to add to this discussion.
@sandyhardstone7227 жыл бұрын
Wafflerofl okay I do see your point and you do make sense. And I have no objection against those who feel "she shouldn't be here with the innocent women". I do however have a problem with those who are just here to bash Anita, most of the people doing that aren't even saying what you're saying. They're just hating on a woman (who, I understand, doesn't belong here) who was featured for perhaps a few minutes in this segment. But you do make a point.

There are women doing feminist talks right now who have literally had multiple attempts made at their life in 'less developed' countries. This doesn't stop them from doing feminist talks, so Anita's pathetic crying turned money grubbing over an email that was declared not a threat BEFORE she cancelled her speech and rode around in a cop car all day for the news people doesn't exactly make me empathize with her. I mean fuck, one lady who visited all the local high-schools around here only stopped doing public talks in her country after being chased out of said country by a group of 20 odd armed men for days, literally shooting at the truck she was hiding in as they crossed the border. It was like one of those WWII Jewish escape stories! But no, a shitty, incredibly suspect email is clearly good enough reason to hang up all our beliefs and hide for a day; even if the school in question and the local police offer to bolster the amount of security for the event. I really like John, but I really wish the researchers had used better examples of people receiving real threats online from actual, credible (read: not anonymous) groups that have been proven to go through with them, instead of just the most vocally upset ones. Well, the other ones were fine I guess as I don't know anything much about them, but the Anita one just pisses me off. Edit: spelling. It's too early for this.
@ZeroTheHeroGOAT7 жыл бұрын
The threats are juvenile at best. But nobody should be allowed to create false truths on such weak evidence base as she has, so some form of public reaction is to be expected. Policing online reactions is a poor way of going about the issue though, rather focus even more thoroughly on online etiquette. The nasty behavior online has actually rubbed off and is more and more visible in real life situations as well. The web blanket is fading and people are generally more obnoxious than just a decade ago.

This happened to me in 2015. Whackjob ex posted nude pictures of me on Facebook where I have 5000 business connections. He also started a new FB profile in my name with nude pics of me as my picture and had clients calling me for hours to tell me because they got friend requests. So, I was in Florida at the time, and I filed for a protective order at the courts that was so strong, that guy can’t even mention my name and he is arrested immediately. The best thing is that it is permanent, doesn’t expire and follows me across state lines. I was pulled over for having an expired tag and it’s attached to my drivers license because the officer asked me about it and made sure my male son was not this guy. I haven’t had an issue with him since. I’m sure he has moved on to someone else.

I'm a female and I've been fortunate enough to only be told to get my ass back in the kitchen. As I love my kitchen... that wasn't so bad in the scheme of things. But, right now, I'm part of a local chat group that has a person threatening other members. Going to their house. Describing their fence and security system. Snidely saying that they know what car the woman drives and what her husband drives and that 'we know when he's not home to protect you'... IT'S A FREAKING WOMAN DOING THE THREATS. She's not shy about her identity. She's flat-out saying that she's going to murder this woman, but she'll try to shield her children from the carnage when she does it. (Yes. The cops have been called) One of the worst cases of online bullying that I was ever witness to was a group of three teenage females trying to drive another girl into suicide. Online harassment is a major problem, but women are just as guilty and men are just as likely to be victims. Human beings SUCK. And, if given the opportunity, we'll suck even harder. Bullying isn't a female problem. It's a human problem. Now I'm going to relieve some of this stress by putting an egg in my baby-maker and punching it. (I'll bet money that there's a fetish video out there showing this exact same thing... *sigh*)

Women speaking up have constantly faced consequences in the past too. Not just physical beatings by their brothers, fathers or spouses, but public shaming in neighborhoods, the salem witch trials and even incarceration for 'hysteria', a catch all that any kind of powerful men could use to call women crazy and have them put in a psyche ward etc. Women have always had the shorter end of the stick. I always hate the arguments about physical fitness in geneology. As a man, I prefer to think it's because women first had the thought to maybe treat others with respect, and man proceeded to ignore her for 8000 years, because we are so unbelievably dense.

@WDSimp8 жыл бұрын
Holdin McGroin I don't believe that just laughing off threats is the proper way to go about this. May be showing my age here, but back before we had the internet, sending threats to people through the mail or by telephone were typically followed up on by the police, and more often than not the people who sent those threats was punished for their actions. The internet is making that considerably more difficult, but it is certainly not something that we should just give up on as a society.

Anita Sarkesean makes her living on victimizing herself. Its a little disrespectful to the massive amount of women who have been genuinely harassed without any monetary incentive or popular exposure to have her follow a woman whos had her life destroyed by revenge porn. I say this as a feminist, as someone whos been on work trips to Africa to build girls schools, who understands that the empowerment of women and their equal treatment and protection under the law is vital to further progress within our ever more global society; Anita and other sensationalist acts of the same shade are bad for the movement. They take energy and frustration that HAS to act as a catalyst if we want to fix this sort of thing, and redirects into banal self righteous squabbling with schoolboys on reddit.

WHY IS NO ONE LISTENING TO THE OTHER SIDE!? Why is it that all of these news outlets are only interviewing anti Gamergaters? There are TWO sides to this story. Gamergate is NOT about harassment, it is about ethics, integrity, and anti-censorship. I wish these guys would actually do more research.

@CosmicGuitares8 жыл бұрын
Blake Bailey Insisting that it's about ethics doesn't change that the movement has been used for more nefarious purposes. Just repeating "it's about ethics in games journalism" doesn't erase that, nor does it lend credibility to the movement in any way. I know it can be frustrating to wave the GamerGate banner and have people respond by assuming you're a bad guy, but that's the problem when you throw yourself in with a nasty lot that has made a poor name for themselves. I said it back in August 2014 and I'll say it again: If people in GamerGate wanted to be taken seriously as a movement that sought after ethical journalism, they would be wise to distance themselves from the hashtag that has been used for so much negativity and harassment. A re-branding is long overdue, and this time there should be no tolerance for those who would seek to use the movement as a proxy for their own hate.

And let's be fair, not taking naked photos is genuinely good advice. Telling people to take preventative measures is not a bad thing. --------------------------------------------------- Okay, I'm adding this here because people are too stupid to actually read what I said. I'm not blaming victims here. I'm just saying that telling someone not to take nude photos of themselves is good advice because they can't get leaked if they don't exist.

In addition, even if you do have irrefutable proof that women get harassed more than men online, how is men getting harassed not also a problem? Please do yourself a favour and learn to think before you type to avoid wasting the time and brain cells of others as they try to make sense your inane ramblings.

Secondly the proof was in the video, clearly didn't pay attention -.- also its a problem for men but it's a smaller percentage thus when talking about online harassment it is easier to get information around female harassment than males. Another problem is that finding statics around male online harassment is hard enough as they wouldn't want people to know they are feeling vulnerable.

+Lauren Hicks The topic is good and it's great Oliver is sharing it but he is using some feminazis as examples. He could have used other girls since this problem is big. That's why this video is getting a lot of dislikes. Not because the topic is bad, it's just because of that detail. To be honest, it ruined the video for me too.

White Males are what takes up a majority of the law and Government, so it kinda makes sense that asks them to to cut it out.

I feel like John tried to cover this topic of online bullying... but "revenge porn" doesn't happen nearly as often as people being driven to suicide just for doing or saying something a group of over sensitive people didn't like. A girl on Tumblr was nearly driven to suicide because she drew a picture that some people considered racist. I think we need to do what John advises, and one more thing. We need to educate people -- mostly children -- better on how to use the internet responsibly. If I could, I would definately teach a class on Internet Etiquette.

As a man who covers gaming online even I am hammered with death threats, stalking, and harassment daily. It isnt just a problem with women, it is just the nature of the internet. Last month someone told me, "You cant seem to fit any more ideas in your thick skull so I have no choice but to hold you down and use a power drill to get into your brains." No one likes these comments but if you have the guts to speak up and stand out online unfortunately you have to deal with venom from the snakes.

This is the one time John Oliver has lost me, too many of the "High Up" people will refuse to look beyond the immediate to see beyond Sarkeesian and how she has always made money off of her "Threats" BTW, I have a white penis, I get threats almost weekly, very real and ugly threats, but I don't advertise them - cry about them, nor take almost ANY of them seriously - only ONE I took seriously, never reported it online, went to RCMP, they are still investigating So... this is the only one I could not watch all the way through, the homework was NOT DONE WELL

***** How do you make money off of rape threats? How do you even set a plan in motion to make money off of threats. Or are you saying the threats did start happening, and then she simply capitalizing on them. I have never understood the negativity Anita gets. She is an academic. Her writing stands or falls on its own validity. She might be wrong, or her argument may not hold up critically. Sure. But all the violence and venom she gets...because she said mean things about Mario ...
@josuesays8 жыл бұрын
***** Then why do you watch this show? This show cries foul on a lot of things. I m sorry dude, but there's no reason to hate Anita. You're a whimp if you can't take someone's opinion, digest it, then argue your own points without flipping out. I disagree completely with Anita, but i'm not ignorant enough to think she's killing video games or changing them in a meaningful way. Not only that, the irony is that all of you crying about SJW are the ones giving the SJW their power and credibility. Without people reacting like a lynch mob, the SJW won't have anyone to fight. But, as it seems to always be the case with human conflict, both sides are too freakin' ignorant and blind to realize that they're just the snake biting its own tail. The SJW and the ANit-SJW people have way more in common than they want to recognize. Also, quit victim blaming. It's never okay to threaten someone unless they're like about to murder your baby or something. It's disgusting to threaten people and, for me, it's even more disgusting to lambast people for crying foul on those that threaten others. Get over it, bad shit happens, and it's not going to stop unless we all pull together to stop it. Just like you went to RCMP to deal with that threat shows that you don't always "handle shit yourself" so quit telling people, people you don't know on a personal level, when it's okay and not okay to handle shit on their own.
@amt2538 жыл бұрын
***** I never followed the Sarkeesian story, so I can't make any assertion about her claims or any claims against her. Indeed, it may have been a mistake to include her in the video; again, I don't know. But I am interested in some of the general assertions you've made here. You say that this is a society of wimps and that people who are harassed online should handle it themselves. How do you feel about stalkers and such in real life? Should people report them to the police, or handle it themselves? And since real-world stalkers in many cases do eventually turn violent, why should people receiving threats believe that online threats are usually harmless? You say that you were threatened because you fed some trolls online. I may misunderstand your description, but it seems like you were trying to rile people up and perhaps you expected them to threaten you. Most of Oliver's report addresses the experiences of people who had no interest in stirring up anger or controversy, who were just going about their daily lives, but for whom the internet became a place of harassment and threat. He speaks specifically about women whose lives have been all but ruined by people posting nude photos of them online without their permission. I ask for information about the threats you've received not to invalidate your experience but to ask whether it was comparable to the experiences addressed in the report.
@lion_mx8 жыл бұрын
amt253 The thing is, these people either fabricate these threats to gain whatever they want (money, fame, further their agenda) or just overreact to what happened. Look at Brianna Wu, where the police of their district already released a document where it stated that after investigating the reports, her "threat" reports are not real and just waste the police resources; because she still files reports again and again and again. They undermine real threat victims and as said before the waste real time and resources meant to help and investigate real threats.

‘Just don’t take them’ is terrible advice for so many reasons not least of which being that you probably trusted the person at the time you sent them and lots of people are manipulated into sending them but I know a ton of people who have photos taken without their knowledge or consent. When I literally like 12 some girls in my PE class pulled down my skirt in the changing room and then made sure I was in the background of a selfie they took, luckily those weren’t posted anywhere but similar happened to my sister. Her best friend at the time took pictures of her when she was changing without her knowing and sent them to at least one of their friends. She only found out cause the dude told her about it So yeah, it’s really not as simple as ‘don’t take them’
@Dutch3DMaster2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I am still baffled as to why the discussion rarely seems to focus on people being angry over the person who abused trust and made whatever troubling picture go public. Everyone is immediately like "Well, don't take 'm then..." and I'm like "So, why don't we talk about the absolute asshole who thought taking revenge on someone like that would make you cool?"
@emordnilap4747 Жыл бұрын
Yeah no way not taking/letting someone take nude pics would solve this problem. It's extremely well known that it's common for perverts to take pictures without consent. Sometimes people they know, just as often strangers. Ever wonder why you can't turn off the camera shutter sound on your phone? This was implemented to alert any woman when someone takes a picture under her skirt, or bathroom stall. Think about how much of a problem it has to be, for every smart phone manufacturer to agree, their products are causing enough harm that and they need to do something about it.
