I am currently dealing with a dry socket. My tooth was a difficult extraction so this explains the pain. The clot really never fully developed so by day 3 it was over the top radiating to the ear and eye. Thanks for explaining what you did. Either I was so uncomfortable from the broken tooth to begin with that I didn’t retain the info. I appreciate the thoroughness.

One good tip, for anyone having to do an extraction to reduce the chances of having a dry socket. Have a deep clean done beforehand on the same day, by scaling and cleaning your mouth of tartar and plaque, it gets rid of a lot of bacteria which would otherwise affect the bloodclot, so this in essence will prep your mouth for the extraction. It will cost more, but will help to heal your extraction quicker and leave your mouth feeling fresh.

@@OnlineExodontia my dentist gave me one of those. Unfortunately, I messed up on two things. 1. Was that I didn't know how hard i had to bite on gauze, so I bled fora few hours. 2. I missed a part of the paper that told me I should avoid rinsing, which is something I did when I got home a few hours after the dentist appointment (this was before I properly bit on gauze). Hey y'all clove oil was a life saver when i had dry socket and couldn't get to a dentist every couple days. Once i was diagnosed i got it cleaned out, kept it cleaned out and then used clove oil on gauze on it and its the only thing that touched the pain. Weird i know, but if you have a dry socket youll try anything desperately to relieve the pain. I tried this that someone told me and it worked. Now im sharing it anytime i see dry socket cause that was literally the worst.

I NEVER cry from pain and I think I cry now 3 times a day whenever my meds stop working. It was so bad I woke up at 3 in the morning for the past three nights in pain. The pain was so bad it would radiate my entire face to the point where I thought I was going to vomit. I’ve been taking my prescribed meds (which have now run out) and Tylenol and Advil. Great information, it is useful to know that the pain will gradually subside in approximately 7 days. Dealing with this right now. What I'm really worried about is residual food debris. The pain is manageable, and I've only been eating 'solid' food once or twice a day. Otherwise it's yogurt or low sugar smoothies. I take ibuprofen, then eat, and by the time I'm done eating and giving my teeth a quick brush, that's when I grab my monoject to irrigate the food out of the socket. That way the medicine is fully kicking in by then. My worry is that it seems like I can never get all the particles out, there's always a little bit that doesn't want to lift out and clings to the interior. It waves around and looks like if I just irrigated harder it would flush out, but I don't want to be too aggressive on such a sensitive area. The roots still have clots in the bottoms of them and I'd hate to dislodge them. There's some exposed bone between the roots and I think that's what's causing the discomfort. For clarification, it's a lower first molar and the clot never formed properly and was almost completely gone by the third day. Everytime I would eat anything there was a little less there when I went to irrigate. For irrigation and mouth rinsing, I bought a 12 pack of 12 oz bottled water and use 1 - 1 1/2 tsp of fine table salt to create a clean saline rinse solution. Like I said, the pain is manageable. I'm just concerned about the residual food particles that don't want to come out. I may try using a tiny amount of hydrogen peroxide to water. I found this video very helpful. It made me feel better to know that it will heal on it's own.

Buy a plastic or rubber tipped syringe from the drug store. Too many dentists send us home without something to properly flush out the socket. If you're having bottom teeth removed, it's a very high chance of happening no matter how careful you are. I used it to flush with salt water and the pain substantially improved by doing that. Applying some orajel or any other brand around the gums was also another life saver. The ibprofen and Tylenol did an okay job, but it really only takes the edge off when you're dealing with dry socket. Just my two cents after dealing with absolute agony for 5 days, lol.

I don’t know if I have dry socket this is my third day and it’s still aching I don’t taste nor smell any bad odor in my mouth but I’m having anxiety having this because of the ache and the ache around the area because my dentist haven’t said anything what are the do’s and don’ts so I’m basically just searching online. I don’t smoke, didn’t brush my teeth really for a day after the extraction, did the cold compress and salt water, didn’t drink from straw and just eat porridge until now. Day 2 evening, that’s when I started to feel the pain, I’m going back to my dentist just to make sure.

I did something like this- I was working a month long gig (no days off) and got my bottom right wisdom removed the day prior to my flight to my gig. I smoked, I ate crunchy things, then met my match on about day 4. Thank God my Dentist gave me tons of amoxicillin, Ibuprofen, and Tylenol, or I wouldn’t have been able to make it. I would clean the site myself by removing any food with one of those poke tools, and tweezers/ cotton swabs, and then rinse the site with salt water. I then would brush my teeth & I had medicated toothpaste at the time for my gums, so I figured it would help. Afterwards, I would rinse again and then squeeze oragel inside and packing wet gauze in the hole- following up with taking one ibuprofen 500 & one Tylenol 500 & amoxicillin. Slowly it got better, and then I realized the gums were healing/ closing. I feel no pain as of now (2 months later) but it definitely took about 16/17 days post extraction to finally have a 90% better sense of relief.

I'm on day 4 right now and it's been the worst. I almost vomited from the pain. I had my general dentist pull the tooth and it ended up being a traumatic extraction. The tooth broke into 4 pieces and it was like 4 extractions in 1. The first day was sore but tolerable, days two and three it felt a lot better, then BAM day 4 I had gum pain, jaw pain and it was unbearable. It's Friday evening so I can't see my dentist until Monday. Ibuprofen and Tylenol have not helped. The only thing that worked was today I went and got Red Cross Toothache with eugenol and packed the socket with it - I was worried it was going to sting bad and it didn't - you just have to be very careful not to touch other parts of your mouth it will sting - but it's decreased the pain probably by 80% and has made it at least tolerable until it's over and can see my dentist.

You should experience a bit of relief at the time that they place the medication. It's not uncommon for a dry socket to last for several days. I've had a couple times where it went on for 7-10 days (not the norm). I would keep in touch with your dentist and they'll advise what is best. Often I prescribe pain medication for patients so that they can tolerate the discomfort. All the best!

I just recovered from this painful aliment, being over 50 my pain lasted 7 days and I used 400mg ibuprofen every 4 hours, 200mg vitamin C and with every meal. Eat soft foods with NO caffeine or any kind of stimulant as this makes pain worse. I use a vape so had to stop that and use a quick mist on side of tongue. If your pain is really bad clove oil on a soft cotton bud dabbed into the healing area helps but only when pain peaks. In all this is one really bad painful experience and I took a week of work as driving with this is not a good idea when pain peaks so have patience use warm salt water twice a day also and you will get through it.

Dry sockets are self-resolving with enough time. What I tell patients is if you can manage your pain with Advil / Tylenol and you're functioning okay, continue with that approach as long as the pain is decreasing day by day. If the pain is too much for those basic meds, or if it's staying steady or increasing, it's best to visit the dentist so they can flush the sites and evaluate whether or not they could benefit from a dressing of some kind. Hope that helps! I wish you well!

Ive learnt I have dry socket with the symptoms of that foul saliva taste, smelly breath and swollen glands under my jaw and round my ear. I've been running with salt water and have put a fresh gaunt in then ringed my mouth with mouth wash to prevent that taste seeping through - seems to do the trick... Im on day 7 post surgery and just went to see my dentist for a follow up. The lady told me i have to start irrigating the bottom two wisdom tooth sockets. ( i had all 4 removed but she says that gravity will keep stuff out of my top sockets) When she did, lots of stuff came out of my left socket, but then quite a bit of blood came out of my right. My mouth is a tad sore coming home and i was just wondering could she have removed my blood clot? Is bleeding normal 7 days post op?
@OnlineExodontia
@OnlineExodontia 5 жыл бұрын
This is pretty standard and it's a good idea to follow her recommendation. If food/debris gets entrapped in the lower sockets, you can sometimes get a delayed infection that comes on 4-6 weeks after you have the teeth removed. The uppers typically don't need to be irrigated. The sites can be a bit inflamed and keep in mind they are healing so yes a bit of bleeding would be normal and is often seen when rinsing them out. The clot should be established very quickly (first 24-48 hours) so at this point in time you should not be too concerned about that. All the best...it eventually gets better!

I would refrain from doing anything prior to experiencing the symptoms and / or diagnosis of dry socket. Placing anything foreign in the site while healing will only compromise the site further. Now I did use a straw throughout sipping liquids for the first three days and then salt water rinse between day two and day four, but I didn’t spit hard. But I did notice that when they did the procedure they did kind of forcefully push down on the jaw Back-and-forth trying to get to 29 out. Day four I had to go back I was experiencing some catastrophic pain. It was no bleeding or anything like that but when I did go in, they did find out that I did have a dry socket so he filled it with some type of gel and come to find out it was alveogyl And the pain has went down, but I was advised to remain on the restrictions of only eating liquid food for the next 24 hours. Having a dry socket sucks!! I’ve had five teeth pulled, four wisdom teeth and one molar and I didn’t have a single dry socket. It’s something I was dreading and lucky did not have to deal with it.

I have had a dry socket for almost 3 weeks and it’s not super painful, but it just won’t heal. I smoke weed out of a bong from my doctor but only like once or twice a day and there’s no suction (took out the water and it’s wide). Why won’t it heal? It’s starting to get really sensitive and just today I have a weird smell and taste. I even had sutures. Again the pain isn’t extreme but I can start to feel my jaw hurting. I wasn’t irrigating it till today because I forgot but i was gently gargling water to keep any visual debris out but some is in there, I’m sure.

I had dry socket a couple times each time it downright hurt. When I had a dry socket went to my dentist where she put a paste in the socket. Then she had me come back like 3 days later so she can re-apply some more paste.

It's exactly 7 days today I took my right lower wisdom tooth out. Still painful but not as much as before. The hole has rapidly been closing, looks almost fully closed (but not yet). I had horrible pain a few days ago but Advil calmed it. Don't think it's dry socket. It would hurt more when I drank or ate something (I've only been eating soft foods and ONLY on the opposite side). Dr. did not provide a syringe and office is closed due to CO virus. Drugstore does not sell it. I do salt water rinse sometimes. Never see any food coming out. My question is---what is the implications that the hole will fully close and food is buried in there? Is it harmful? Will the food be stuck there forever and can this cause lasting pain? Will I have to go to the office weeks and months later to open it up again??

Great question Paul and unfortunate timing on the wisdom tooth situation. It is next to impossible to keep food out from lower extraction sites. The good news is that the majority of cases heal uneventfully. The socket typically remodels from the base upwards and as long as you're doing your best to clean the area, it should heal over with no trouble. Is it possible for food or debris (bone chips/dust) to be trapped in the socket? Yes. This is more common when an incision is made and the gum is lifted away from the bone. It creates a dead space under the gum that can become home to foreign material which harbours bacteria and can lead to infection. If this happens, it's common to see people returning in 4-6 weeks following the extraction with swelling and discomfort in the area. Usually it's treated via antibiotics alone, but there are cases where you may have to re-anesthetize and enter the area again. Roughly 95% of your healing will be complete around the 6 week mark, so I would not be alarmed that hole is still present after 7 days. To further place your mind at ease, there are some oral surgeons who do not routinely suture wisdom tooth extraction sites even when a significant incision has been made. Even in these cases, the healing seems to be comparable to the cases that are sutured up. All the best to you Paul. I hope this was helpful. Stay well!

I went to a pharmacy and got a saline spray in a can, oral pain relief gel for dental pain and gauze, and told my cousin who has dry socket I think to wash with saline, apply oral gel, and cover with the a gauze for half an hour to let it absorb.. did I come up with the right treatment?

Doctors need to stop relying on conversation to instruct the patient of what to do. Important details can be easily missed or forgotten especially when the patient is already managing pain and stress when they come in. The on paper directions my oral surgeon gave me don't even allude to the need to keep a blood clot in place. Just reading through it otherwise uninformed the gauze is just for stopping the bleeding and "dry socket" is caused by smoking. The instruction sheet never even tells you what dry socket is.

I got my wisdom teeth out 3 days ago and I just spit out a lot of blood and dark red thick clots of blood. The area now hurts and I‘ve been panicking crying for hours now. Going to a dental ambulance tomorrow and hope all goes well😞

That happened to me the night of day one. While I was swallowing bloody saliva, I accidentally did a sucking motion which may have bothered the clot on my lower right jaw where my wisdom tooth was. All of a sudden, I tasted a lot of blood on my tongue and felt a higher volume of liquid in my mouth. I opened my mouth and out flowed blood with some dark clots in it. I considered biting onto gauze to clean up, but I didn't do it because I was afraid it was going to pick up the rest of the clot. I just swallowed some of the blood and left the rest to dry in my mouth. It is now 5 days later. From what I have learned, I am healing in the ideal way.
