Last year I bought a 13 Fishing 6' Rely black ultalight rod and had a ball catching redbreast , rock bass and smallmouth. After 10 months the rod suddenly collapsed just above the reel mount. 13 Fishing replaced the rod immediately and upgraded me to a Defy silver. I'm impressed with the company and will definitely by more of their products for sure!

I've had mine for a year, and I just absolutely loved it. I've caught more fish with this rod in one year than any other pole I've owned during a similar time frame. Unfortunately, I also have a young son who frequently borrows my poles, and he figured out a way to get snagged and broke it in two pieces. I need a moment.

Well, I just got the 6'6" 2 pc "light" rod, to start with, and I LOVE this rod. Ive already crushed a couple dinks on the dt jr, and this is my new favorite rod. And its the cheapest one i own. I did pair it with my 1000 shimano vanford, so its a sweet set up for sure.

I have handled and tested both the 5’6” foot and 6‘6“ models. Both of them have very similar actions. Both are not wimpy noodles. When you shake the rod, the tip is quick to come back to straight and will not wobble for a long period of time like many of the flimsier rods, such as the Shakespeare micro series or Okuma Celilo. They have a somewhat firm tip that doesn’t like to load up a ton when casting ultra light lures and a very fast action bordering on extra fast. Most of the rod is backbone with 80% of the total rod flex happening in the first 16 inches of the rod. The backbone is pretty stout for an ultralight, and it is bordering on a lite power rod, but I wouldn’t consider it a broomstick by any means. It has plenty of backbone for reeling in the occasional larger fish. As for sensitivity it’s good but not Shimano Zodias great. Most likely because it has a 24 Ton HTC 2 Blank versus the more sensitive 30 and higher blanks. But this also makes it more durable and less susceptible to breakage, which is important for the thinner more fragile ultralight rods. You are not going to find a more sensitive rod without getting into the $80 and higher price range. The guides are decent and a step up from the lower end guides you find on cheaper rods, but they are nothing high end, or fancy. When it comes to ergonomics and comfort, it has good ergonomics and is designed for two different hand positions, a more forward grip with your index finger and thumb on the top cork and a second more neutral position with your index finger just below the cork on the next finger groove which is on the black plastic and your thumb resting on a cut out on the top of the handle so you can feel the blank a little better. Though it has good, well thought out ergonomics, I find the rod handle to be a little thin in diameter for my liking. As for fit and finish, it is very good for a rod in this price range and I couldn’t find any serious cosmetic issues with the rods I tested, but don’t be surprised if you see the occasional rod with less than stellar cork, epoxy, or component fitment and gap issues come off of the assembly line, and somehow make it to the store shelves. As for balance, this is where the 6’6” and 7’ model struggle. The 5’6” and 5’ model, balance really good but the 6’6” feels a bit tip heavy without a reel, and with a 2000 size Daiwa Legalis reel it balances perfectly on the small cork section at the top of the handle. But when you move your hand down to the next lower finger groove position, which is your index finger on the black plastic on the reel seat so that you can have your thumb sit on top of the top cutout and have the reel between your middle and ring finger, this is where you start to notice it feeling a bit tip heavy. Would I recommend this rod for an all around rod or your only ultralight rod? No, that would have to go to the TFO Trout-Panfish, this rod has a bit too much backbone for use with trout fishing and too firm of a tip to properly load up when casting super light jigs, and too fast of an action to use with treble hook lures. But I do think it has its place and works well for certain techniques, presentations, and lures.

I think the 6'6 Defy Silver will definitely be a better rig than the Celilo. It maintains a fast action better so it is easier to detect bites and properly work small lures. Thanks Marco!

I have a couple of friends with the Defy silver and both have broken the rods (one on a snag). I decided to go with the 6’ Celilo for slip bobber fishing and have caught some great fish on it. How would you compare the 13 Defy Silver to the Daiwa Presso? Especially the regular (not the travel version) if you have tried it. And also I wonder how the 5’ defy silver would be, as all of the 5’6” models are out of stock! What do you think?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 2 жыл бұрын
I have only used the regular Presso in the 7' 2pc model. I did not like that rod. The 5'6 4pc model, on the other hand, was money! I imagine the Presso less than 7' would be something I really like, but the 7' and above are not my style. The Defy Silver is a bit faster action but they are pretty similar rods. I would probably stick with the Presso but that would be a tough decision. The only reason I lean more into the Presso is because I think it will be more versatile and I have heard from numerous people who have broken their Defy Silver (I haven't had that issue yet).

Based on what you throw and your desired rod length, you may enjoy a light a little more. If you are not going to throw anything over 1/8oz, go UL, but if you are going to fish heavier stuff too, the L will handle that load better.

I’m also curious about this, a $20 UL rod, if it can throw 1 gram/1/32oz lures I’ll be at Walmart in about 5 minutes, and out in 6. Fiberglass rods are durable as hell and seem pretty interesting to use for UL if it’s half decent.

hey do you think a light rod rated for 1/16-3/8 oz with 4-6 lb test mono be good for 1/32 oz and 1/64 oz lures. I know its not rated for that but i bet i can still get the lure out far. Anyways awesome video and remember to use trout magnets they work well for bass panfish trout and crappie i caught a couple of bass on them today!

If you are throwing mono go with 4lb. It will work. I have a light action and throw 1/32 oz. On it constantly. The real way to go would be braid to leader. Braid really helps in casting distance.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for helping Ben. I think you’ll definitely be fine with that setup but if you want extra distance, lower your line diameter and you’ll get several more yards on each cast. I get like 15-20% more casting distance on 2lb mono than on 4lb

Kind of a beginner question but how do you not get weeds and grass on your hook all the time in water like that? Are you just able to cast around it?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
I designed Mule Jigs to be super light so they don't sink into the grass and cover too quick. I am able to fish them around heavy cover without having them bog down. Other than that, you just need to cast accurately and feel your baits around the grass. I can try to talk about it more in the future!

Hmmm I haven't used the 6'6 personally but I did feel the whole lineup of their upcoming Omen Trout & Panfish series (basically an upgrade to the defy ultralights) and they were all a good fast action. Based on that, I would assume the 6'6 will still be a true fast. Thanks for watching!

Where do you get your ultralight rods? Locally I was able to find very few of them, and looking online there don't seem to be a ton of options either, at least none that are in stock anywhere. I'm not a _huge_ fan of ordering one online though, my experience with shipping rods hasn't been great.

What's your normal bfs setup? I've been really wanting to get into it. I've got a baby okuma spinner and use an ultralight. Want to move to a light rod, I think, but I'm not sure. What are your thoughts between light and ultralight? I've been using mine forever and love it just wanting to cast a little bit heavier lures.

Nothing wrong with a light if you want to step the weights up a bit! I think a light is great for trout fishing with spinners and whatnot. Just depends on what you’re looking to do!

I’ve actually returned to fishing after long time away doing other interests! After running into your channel I became interested in getting into ultralight fishing at minimalistic way with maybe one or two rods and a lure setup like your design that can target multiple species of fish !!! I’m not after big fish but just fun catching what ever I can catch or maybe chase after black or other panfish! After watching your 13 fishing defy review I purchased the same rod with Daiwa Laguna 1000 LT reel and got the Daiwa 8x grand braid in 6lb and 4lb fluorocarbon leader line! You prefer 1-4 pounds line or 2-6 ive seen some Daiwa UL rods but actually they're just able to cast until 1/8 oz which is to limited compared to Shimanos or Berkleys UL rods which are able to cast 3/16 oz lures... Those have more applications, or what do you think ?

What kind of cork sealer do you use on your rods? Looking to extend the life of my investments
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
I just bought some cheap cork sealant on amazon for a few bucks. It almost reminds me of Elmer's glue. Basically you just put the white paste on there, it dries clear, then you wipe it off with a wet rag. Do that two times and it is coated perfectly. Super nice stuff! I don't think the sealant brand matters though.

Hi, nice rod. Ethan, defy silver vs tfo - your honest opinion please for trout and panfish. lost my celio recently due to a fish pulling in my rod a boat while soaking powerbait. I tried the phenix elixir and its super thin and good action but didnt like the reel seal and there were no 7ft elixirs available. I did like dobyns sierra trout's reel seat but a little too stout to cast light lures. I am dying to get my hands on a tfo to test it out.

I would go for the TFO if you plan to fish trout as well. I would go for the Defy Silver if you primarily will fish jigs for panfish though. They are both fantastic options but the TFO might be a bit more versatile.
