Thank you John for a well executed repair. 1. You cleaned the commutator, not the "connector" and I'd use sandpaper coarser than 800 or 1000... try 400 or 320 grit and it will clean up sooner and easier. You're right about all random orbital sanders being constructed the same, I have a Ridgid R2601 apart and it's similar, with the bottom bearing going bad. 2. The plastic or rubber seal on the bottom bearing can be removed (sometimes) using a sharp tool, then the accumulated dust removed from the balls. Lube, reassemble and good to go, if the bearing wasn't too far gone in the first place. 3. WD-40 is NOT SUITABLE for bearing lubrication. Use a thin white grease or similar, but will need to get in inside the bearing since the seal will mostly prevent it from getting there by itself. 4. Cleaning power tools every 3-6 months in a shop environment is far too frequent (in my opinion). Well designed power tools may accumulate dust, but should be able to function indefinitely without such cleaning. Clean it makes you feel good but no under the misconception that it will "improve" things. I clean mine only if a failure requires me to disassemble the tool.

Thanks for this video. You saved me $140 Canadian for a new sander. My bearing was jammed up with dust. Added WD40 and that was the fix.

I appreciate the video they had great insight mine's just going way too fast I'm going to try this and see what happens. ps. after you put the WD-40 on it you should rinse it off with rubbing alcohol that way it doesn't collect the Dustin do this twice as fast.

Ok, your video just saved me 140euros. Not exagerating, my problem was the bearing, the one you sprayed with wd40. Same thing for me, I sprayed it and now it works. My problem was that when I set it down on the wood, it wouldn't turn, but if I lifted it off the wood it would spin fine. My question at this point is, did this happen because I sanded down boards with grain filler/stucco on them? Did the chalkey dust get into the bearing?

you should use a lubricant instead of a water displacer. WD40 only lubricates for a few weeks until it evaporates, burns or otherwise gunks up. Additionally I would never "clean" the rotor contacts. That layer is not oxides, it's just graphite buildup from the brushes. At least use a finer sandpaper and just remove a thin layer, don't make it fully "clean". Good advice in general though. We would all save some money if we just cleaned our parts more often instead of runing them into the ground.
