I was perplexed when that didn't work. Only after watching this video did I realize that the holes are needed in the paper. Thanks!!!

~~Yeah,I love my orbital. IF I use/need 60 grit? It's followed by 100,150,180&depending on what is? 220&maybe even 320 as well. With 80 grit it's 120,180 etc. ~~When I redid my coffee table w/birch top I used 320,400&600 glued&pressed over night to old discs before finished hand sanding w/800. Felt like glass&sure can imagine the results after doing two coats red mahogany stain that darkened it beautifully. Followed by coat wipe on Satin poly using 320&400 by hand between stains&after the poly before finishing w/3 light coats of laquer. ~~Definitely pleased,poured lil water out of curiosity/test&it beaded like the best ceramic ever.

Love your content, have learned so much! Question… when using the orbital sander, what dictates the speed you should use? Mine has a variable speed, and I don’t know enough about these things to know if they all do. I will look for a more advanced video as well. Thanks!!!
@TrainingHandsAcademy4 ай бұрын
Hello. Great question. 90% of the time you can keep it at full speed. You can dial it back as a way to slow down the amount of material it will remove.

Logical, essentialized, and succinct. Well done. Useful to me. Thank you. Question: Should I expect to be able to remove 1/16” to ⅛” height difference between joined plywood and hardwood with an orbital sander? Background: New purchase of Ryobi OS, used included sample of 80 grit to smooth joint between maple face frame and ¾” ply cabinet. 20 minutes of sanding with little result on hardwood. My technique was as you describe, so I don’t think that was the issue. Used to hand sanding; I often use 60 grit and have better results than I did with the OS. I wonder if the sample paper is inferior, or I expect too much from an OS.
@TrainingHandsAcademy4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what's going on. A random orbital should have no problem removing that amount of material. If you want to find me on Instagram, you can send me a photo/video of what you are working on, and I might be able to help you better.

Hi... All the way from South Africa and just came across this video while searching to buy myself an orbital sander. Thank you for the tips and info and help me making a more informative decision. Do have a question though... What is meant by throwing discs?
@TrainingHandsAcademy3 жыл бұрын
I would think it means when the disc of the sander becomes loose and comes off the sander or an angle grinder. I've never seen it happen but I'm sure it can.

Can the random orbital sander remove paint and stain quickly? Or are you better off with an angle grinder with sanding attachment? I.e. a big project like sanding an entire deck because you can't use a stripper or power wash safely in the environment
@TrainingHandsAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Yes it can

I have a Dewalt DWE6423 and I find it awkward to control. it tries to pull in different directions. sometimes it chatters a bit. I know you're supposed to let the weight of the sander do the sanding and not press etc. not sure if i need to adjust speed or or the work piece is too small. its a 125mm sanding pad but the piece I was sanding was 80mm, and 40mm. its hard to keep it centered and it seemed to work better on the top or the bottom of the disc etc.
@tonyenkiducx2 жыл бұрын
How much pressure should I be applying to the sander? Can't seem to find any info on that, and I've had varying results depending on how much I apply.
@TrainingHandsAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I would say light to moderate pressure... no need to push down hard on a random orbit. If you find the need to push down to remove more material quicker, you should lower the grit of your sandpaper. Bottom line, let the machine do most of the work, you are there just to guide it. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the video! If the random orbital sander goes at random how does it prevent cross grain scratches?
@TrainingHandsAcademy2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Simple answer, because of the design/function of the random orbit. Now, some sanders are of course better than others at this, but the only time you have to worry about cross grain scratches now a-days, is if you are hand sanding. :)

What is you reccomendation on sanding progression? You showed the numbers from 80 to 220 grits (6 steps), but can I do it like 80 - 120 - 180 and get great result while skipping the numbers between? I know I may sound like cutting corners or whatnot, tbh my sanding skills are at minimum, so I need your opinion to this...
@TrainingHandsAcademy4 жыл бұрын
You can totally do a 3 step sanding progression. I would probably do something like 120 - 180 -220.

Do we need to exert certain amount of pressure when using the sander ? ? ? Or should we just allow to sander to run smoothly ? ? ? Thanks . .
