Wow that far back? I thought it was late 60s early 70s but you are likely right :)

@@ICookAndPaint The hint was that most people use gelatin in their recipes… If you know anything about 1950s food, they were absolutely OBSESSED with using gelatin and Jell-O mix in recipes! It was a really gross fad lol. Edit: I just now saw you are using marshmallows in your recipe… Did you know that marshmallows have gelatin in them? Lol. As a vegetarian, I had to cut out eating rice crispy treats because of that, until one day I went to my local Lassens (which is a health store chain that carries anything from vitamins to dry/refrigerated/frozen vegetarian and vegan foods to vegan baked goods, etc), and I found them stocking gelatin-free marshmallows, which made them vegetarian! I so loved making rice crispy treats again, but then one day JUST before the “pandemic,” that Lassen’s permanently closed. 😢 Any other Lassen’s is too far of a drive for me. I tried looking for gelatin free marshmallows online to buy, but unfortunately the very limited amount I found were ridiculously expensive. It really sucks because the vegetarian marshmallows tasted exactly like and melted just the same as “the real deal gelatin ones,“ so I really don’t get why food producers add in that ingredient, using an animal product when it’s not needed at all. It pisses me off.

@@one-eyepadidally8449 Have you tried using agar agar powder? It’s a seaweed based powder that works the same way as gelatin. You can find it in most Asian grocery stores and it’s not expensive at all. Of course that means you’d have to make your own marshmallows before making rice crispy squares, but at least you would have them :)

@@ICookAndPaint Hah! No I haven’t tried that - making marshmallows sounds like quite a daunting task! 😂 I wonder how a home cook would even shape them lol. That is a handy tip to know though that there is an ingredient out there that can replicate gelatin. Thanks for that! ☺️

I fell in love with Grasshopper pie when it was brought to a family reunion, but I forgot to get the recipe. Now I can bring it to the next one!

Well I was intrigued, I was wondering if it had actual grasshoppers in it 🙈.... Well you never know, different counties have strange foods don't they🤔 as a vegetarian I couldn't have it....... turns out I still can't have it as the marshmallows have pig juice in them but it looks amazing 😁

Haha good thing no grasshoppers! I think it would be easy to make plant based.

Would this recipe be alright with using store bought whipped cream?
@ICookAndPaint17 күн бұрын
Yes it should be okay as the marshmallows keep it firm :)
