I was pretty sure that I never wanted to tape and mud drywall - and now I know FOR SURE that I never want to! Love doing my home projects, and have hung drywall a few times, but never have done this part. Bless you brother!

To set the stage (this might be a novel, btw..lol), I did this in a garage that simply needed to be fire rated, and I was willing to sacrifice quality for speed. (It turned out amazing, btw) I wound up filling in all gaps, etc with hot mud. I then stapled up mesh tape, making sure it was pulled tight. After that, I mixed up some 45 mud a little thinner than usual and right from the same bucket I mixed it in, I rolled it over the tape with a mini roller with a thick nap. After each seam, I then went back right away with a 6in knife and empty mud pan to smooth it out. Rinse, repeat for every seam. Used the same method for applying the yellow easy sand second coat. All in all it took less than half the time, the finish was flawless, and my body wasn’t dying after being up and down on a ladder 8 million times. The best tool I have ever repurposed for every stage of painting, taping, drywall, etc is a 100% silicone rubber spatula that you can buy in the kitchen section! If you use that spatula to keep the inside walls of a bucket of mud or a bucket of paint clean as you work, the dried crumbs and dried paint never fall in and get ruined. And pour an inch or two of water over that mud to keep it overnight. I’ll be amazed if anyone reads all this…lol 😜

As a carpenter, drywall is one of my biggest nemesis. It's not for everyone and it's DEFINITELY not for me. I only do it when I 100% have to. Which typically means my own house, lol.

Hey Handy, Ive watched a few drywall videos of yours - You Do Great mud work my man. On the left over mud - just put an overly damp (slightly dripping) rag over the bucket top, with your hands slide the rag down to the mud level and just put the lid on ... I learned this back in the late 70's from a bay area union drywall contractor I was interning for I do at least 1 drywall tape/texture job a month, I do this with my mud and even if its 3-4 weeks later the mud is in perfect shape to keep on trucking with it. Only time I've ever had an issue was with a bucket I forgot about in the shop that I found and was going to use over a year old, it had a (very small) amount of mold growing so I tossed it out

Some time back I was on a job in tandem with a GC on a 1920's era Tudor. Some fairly extensive remodeling was going on which included a decent amount of drywall work. The day comes when I meet their drywall finisher. He was a young guy, fast, efficient, and affable. When I said it seemed like he really enjoyed his work, he said he absolutely did. That there was a rhythm to it he found very cathartic and calming. He was memorable (I'm talking about him 20 years later). One of those people you meet now and again who have this natural positive energy about them.

Dueling Banjos would sound funny. To prevent the mud from falling off the sides of your 6-inch blade. make a 2-inch bead at the top edge of your pan. scoop that so its center of your blade. don't have mud one inch on the ends of the blade.

Personally I just call in a drywall finisher once I get everything hung. It’s one area that I find outsourcing is well worth. I’m not a professional but have done a few of my own house remodels and a 4 unit apartment building for my family so I totally understand if you are a handyman but for me personally I love watching a pro get this type of work done because it’s more of an art when it comes to modern finishes as well.

On the bonus video, put the bag in, then fill it with a couple of inches of water to purge the air out.

I use a crown stapler for corner beads. Efficient and inexpensive. Have used a hock and a tray, prefer the tray. Have added a little 45 or 90 powder to the mix to enhance dry/set time. Taping corners sucks. I also keep a sponge around, get it damp, and feather the edges in a circular pattern-reduces sanding and adds a beautiful taper.

You should do your corners using setting type mud. You typically get a good 3/16 to sometimes 1/4" of mud and it takes forever to dry and will crack and shrink. I typically do my taping and first coat with hot mud then switch to all purpose for the final level 4 or 5 finish.

At the end of the video you're trying to vacuum seal the left over mud. If the bag has no holes in it, just pour a couple of inches of water into the bag 👍

Hey Handy. Here in the Heart of Dixie most corners are rounded. You ever been asked to go with rounded corners? Handy on!

I heard you can flatten out the mud and put a half inch of water on top, then cover the bucket with a hawk or similar thing. Good enough for overnight

Pretty good job the only questionable thing I see is the butt joints we always do a 10 inch on each side of the tape on the first coat and a 12 inch each side on the second coat or more depending how flat looks
