Mimi, I was a firefighter/Paramedic for 25 years. In some of the major trauma runs we had, we would have Psychologists help us with debriefing. They would ask when i recognized going into "auto pilot", and when we came back to reality. God provides us with that auto pilot. It is a real thing. Someone has to do this job. I am so proud to have served the community where I was born and raised.

Vince, I’m heartbroken to hear about your son. Sincerely. I’ve experienced similar losses. But I’m not a father. And in my opinion that’s the worst pain to ever have to endure and that is a parent losing a child. It takes a strong individual with an immense amount of will to survive the grief and heartbreak. I Believe you’re the epitome of having the ability to process and get through the pain to eventually be able to celebrate them instead of staying in that constant emotional status. Much Love to you and your family. Keep Shining. And remember his laugh, it was contagious laughter. Keep an eye out for those “Little Hello’s.” I promise you he’s literally closer to you than he’s ever been. 🦁❤️🦁❤️🦁❤️

I was at the tire shop, getting new rubber for my car. It's a unique sports car, so it's gets some attention. While I waited at the window, sipping a coffee and watching the techs at work, an older man sat next to me and asked if that red car was mine. I said yes and we talked fast cars for a bit. He finally mentioned he was a retired highway patrol officer. Over the course of the next hour, he slowly shared some of the tough things he'd seen and dealt with on the roads. My car had long been finished, but we sat and talked until he was done. Thank you, first responders, for all you do.

I live in a rural area and drove into town yesterday for groceries. The young woman in the car behind me spent more time looking down at her lap (obviously texting) than she did looking at the road, and was frequently following way too close. Every time traffic slowed I was afraid she was going to run into the back of my car. When I got to town and was sitting at a red light she was still behind me and she was still very obviously texting. The light turned green and I drove away and when I glanced back she was still sitting unmoving with the light green when I was half a block away. She was completely oblivious to what traffic was doing around her. Unfortunately, they just don't get it.

I'm not, nor have I ever been a first responder (although I did lifeguard at the beach for a number of years), and I was unfortunate enough to be first on scene for an accident very similar to this. Driver was partially decapitated but passenger was still alive somehow. Nothing I could do but talk to her and try to keep her calm while we waited for emergency services. It was brutal, and will never forget what I witnessed. I wish people would just slow their roll!

I am a funeral Director and believe me cases like this are logistical nightmare cases! The vehicle must be cabled onto a wrecker and then wrapped in blue tarp. The vehicle must then be taken to the police impound lot where the coroner and other officials will witness the excavation of the victim. Quite often you need two powerful vehicles at either end to pull the vehicle apart. They normally take a steel bar and weld a bit to the impacted vehicle the best they can and then they use that to attach chains at both ends and then as the wreckers slowly begin a slow pull, the fire department will also start chopping away at the vehicle with the jaws of life while they attempt to extricate the remains of the victim. You will not find a Body intact but rather a crushed tomato type of scenario. You’ll never get the entire body out of a vehicle like this but you do your best. The last time I had one like this we brought A double lined body bag because quite frankly we would just place whatever we could get from the vehicle into the body bag. After that the fire department will spray a combination of 1 gallon of bleach and 200 gallons of water. The reason they do that is because of the biohazard and the fact that this vehicle will attract flies! They normally use a backhoe to dig a small pit for the runoff from the vehicle. Obviously the family will not have a visitation with the open casket but we will put a couple of gallons of formulin and the body bag and then encase the body bag in a larger disaster pouch. Putting that in the casket and then locking the casket down and that’s the best you’re going to get. NOTE: Sometimes the driver will see whats about to happen…. And dive for the passengers seat.. He/She might survive ! If rescue is near. Most of the “accordion calls” don’t. Secondly, as a forethought, it’s always difficult when we are working A catastrophic auto accident. But we no longer see any fatalities as living, breathing human beings anymore. We simply can’t! We would lose our minds. We have to learn early in our career about the difference between “ Life and death” in the biblical sense. The circle of life or the biblical Teaching that we are on this earth for a short time , and then we return to the spiritual realm. “ The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away” once I fell in love, and got married, and was blessed with my children, the gravity of my job became more and more difficult to accept and deal with. For each young wife, whose life was taken far too early by either violence or sickness, I would always put myself in the shoes of the grieving family! The hardest service I have ever been a part of was that of a young woman, who had stopped to help a stranded motorist, and as she was exiting her vehicle, she was struck by a car that did not notice her for some reason. She had four young children, and this funeral weighed so heavily on all of us, that those at the funeral home who drink alcohol went next-door to a bar and ended up having to call their spouses or a taxi to get home. I recall at the cemetery her casket was open, and it was what we call a full couch casket. This is a casket that opens all the way to the bottom much like the kind that Aretha Franklin had she had been dressed in a flowery sundress, and after almost 7 hours of reconstruction looked very relaxed and natural although, in these cases, we draped the casket with a sheer silk Barrier with a sign on the casket that says “ no photography please do not touch” there was a light breeze and it was absolutely beautiful day. Her husband and her children were escorted one more time past the casket. And her little boys were pleading with her to come home. That day I will never forget ! I started smoking again after nine years. If you do this job with no grounding, no faith, you will very quickly end up an alcoholic or worse . every time I talk to a priest or a minister about the death of a baby or a toddler or an entire family. Or like in the case of a beauty shop when some mentally deranged person walked in and killed five women. How do you put that in context? Why did this happen? These were outstanding people. The answer is always the same, we must all be prepared to leave this earth at any given time for any reason. Something about he who loves his life, will lose it. I have to just take things as they are, and pray every day, and do my job the best I can, and prepare myself for things that most people can’t fathom . Thanks

Prediction. Whenever I spot something moving fast at the corner of my eye (especially bikes) or reckless drivers I reflexively got alert and slow down. Also identify crash spots such as sharp corners, merging lanes, one lane roads, intersections ect and be more alert there. Though I’m certain this will illicit an inane “OK Boomer!” response, I’m going to say it anyway. Driving requires an incredible amount of attention at all times to stay safe. Your body is flying through space at speeds it was never intended to do so, with the barest of margin for error, yours or anybody else’s sharing the road around you. All the airbags, seatbelts, crush resistant body design, padded dashboards in the world won’t change the fact that when the vehicle your body is traveling in at high speed suddenly stops by colliding with something, your body continues at that speed until it collides with the seatbelt, the airbags and then the interior of the car and then the surfaces at the exterior of the car and then all of your organs collide with what’s remaining with your bones and skin and then you finally stop in a mangled mess of flesh, blood, bones and organs. Speed kills and driving distracted for even a moment while at speed is a recipe for disaster.

This is difficult to look at. I was in an accident just like this in 1983. I can still hear the sound of the crash and the sounds of them cutting us out of the car. It was truly horrifying! Fortunately the three of us survived without life threatening injuries thanks to the car we were in, a 1965 mustang that sat low to the ground, we were sliding in wet pavement, it felt like it was happening slowly we had some time to react and duck down before we hit, peeling the entire roof of the car all the way back to the trunk. I’m still absolutely terrified of semi’s and have a hard time driving, especially when it’s raining and I have to be near a semi!

A guy from the small town I live in was involved in an accident where an old guy had a heart attack and crossed lanes right in front of his semi truck at 110 KM . There was absolutely nothing he could do and he's been a screwed up mess the last 20years since. It's the same for the first responders, I worked with a guy who'd been on the volunteer fire department for years, He went out on a crew to pull his first body from a fire wreck, I've never seen him look so sick after he came back to work after that. After seeing this guys age, it brings back memories, I remember me and my friends getting our licences around 10 years ago now and driving like maniacs, racing. I truly believe we all think we’re invincible at that age. We used to do what this kid was doing most likely , seeing the highest speed our car can do, texting, racing, doing 80-90mph in a 40. I’m 29 now and wouldn’t dream of doing it now, because life feels more precious, and I’ve seen many people die over the years in crashes . It makes me shiver knowing the stuff I used to do in cars back then. 19 is absolutely nothing behind the wheel, still learning. If your a teen and reading this, or an inexperienced driver. trust me ignore your friend or homies in the car telling you to speed up, or calling you a pussy for driving slow. This happened to myself and a friend of mine nearly 30 years ago. I was 15 he was 17, we were in his 1985 Malibu (old police cruiser style) that same day he had installed new seats that were mounted low and to the floor boards. We were headed down a highway late at night at a speed of 90mph, a low bed semi truck carrying re bar was in the far left turning lane, we were unaware that the driver was making a wide right turn. We ended up completely under the low bed trailer, the roof was completely torn off and the drivers side door was torn off. When the truck driver finally realised we had hit him we were well past the corner where he had turned and only the back end of the car was showing. Some how and in some divine miracle neither me or my friend were injured and didn't have a single scratch. As much as new vehicles have their saftey benefits, I believe it was the old malibu tank like build and the custom seats that helped save us... My deepest condolences to the deceased family.

to everyone saying the semi is at fault for not yielding right of way... he hit the rig near the back (after the rig had time to cross all the lanes of traffic to the curb side) so there was ample time to A) see a huge freaking rig pulling out B) hit your brakes... if the car hit the front of the semi then it could be argued that the semi "just pulled out in front of the car" but the transport had enough time to pull all the way out pretty much and the car hit the rear... transport was pulling out turning south, so, prob not going fast... AND you can clearly see the front of the transport is right by the curb. The description also says the car passed another vehicle... well, they didn't seem to be paying attention because it seems the other vehicle most likely stopped... I would say speed is the biggest factor here since it's pretty hard to almost rip the entire roof off an SUV... if I couldn't stop I would have aimed for the wheels to keep from going under... then again, the driver didn't even see a huge transport pulling out... who knows... sad for the family who has to endure this now...

doesnt matter where the semi was. the suv hit under the trailer. that basically means behind the truck's cab and in front of the trailer's tires. the suv was concentrating on passing the other car and not noticing what was transpiring ahead on the side of the road. the real question is if the suv had not passed would the other car have had to slow down for the truck pulling out. if so, then the fault is with the truck because it didnt yield to oncoming traffic. if the other car didnt have to slow down then the issue is the speed the suv was traveling to pass: too fast to slow down.

Several cars ahead of us was a huge trailer truck carrying huge steel beams. As it started to pass under the bridge, it was clear the load was too high. This all happened very fast but the top beams slid off into the car behind it. And it was a convertible. Finally when the road was cleared, the cops wanted traffic to pass. When we drove past the car, you could see how the beams almost covered the car. Many went straight into the front and back seats. Luckily we didn’t see any people. The pickup passed a car at a high rate of speed on a hill and went head-on with the family of five. You could not tell what was engine and what was firewall in the car. The engine was literally in the cab of the car. The entire inside of the car was covered in blood. The cab of the pickup was broke loose from the frame as well as the engine and transmission and the box and frame was twisted 45 degrees around. The alternator of the pickup was a quarter mile down the highway in the ditch from where the collision happened and full 16 gallon kegs of beer everywhere. I assisted the tow truck driver in clearing the scene on that night. After 40-42 years I have never forgotten what that scene looked like. @Conrad Weinstock I have my cdl and I never would have turned into oncoming traffic with it being that close. It states the first car had to slow down to avoid hitting the semi and that is when the 2nd car went around him. Speed does not matter in this case when he slammed on his breaks the front end of the car lowers which makes the impact that much worse because of the front end being lower it will slid under the trailer more easily. That is why they say to not break it could save your life or when your about to hit a deer. Don't break it can lift the deer or moose up and into your windshield.

I just read the reports, the speed limit at that location is 35 mph. The road at that location is flat and straight. It was daylight when the crash occurred. The road has 2 lanes in each direction with a center turn lane. All indications are is the teenager was traveling at a high rate of speed and neither the other car nor the truck driver injured. The truck driver was not cited for doing anything wrong. This young man essentially committed suicide by being young and stupid.

There always is with fatalities. Really they just need to pull the black box from the car and see what all the perimeters were, steering wheel angle, brake and throttle input, speed, etc. Theres also a good chance for one of the three vehicles to have a dash cam.

@@truegret7778 you said the truck pulled out in front of the first vehicle. that sounds like the trucker is more at fault. if the slower car had to slow down for the truck then the fault lies with the trucker as he wasnt yielding to oncoming traffic. either way there was little the passing car could do even if it was a legal and safe pass. people say high speed but you kinda have to kick it up a notch to pass sometimes. i always do.

As the second vehicle was passing, a semi was pulling out of a driveway on the East side of the road turning South."". I witnessed a Cadillac travelling about 30-35mph run a stop sign and drive up as far as this young man did - the truck trailer was the sort that had a very long tow bar between the dump truck part and the trailer being towed (I don't know the actual name for that sort of truck. I tell my teens "just because you have the green light and the cross traffic doesn't, doesn't mean the cross traffic will stop". This is a tough crash for all involved. RIP to the young teen.

Fortunately future generations will only read about this in their history class and will think to themselves what craziness life must have been like. It will be illegal for humans to drive cars. Bored teens looking for pranks will deliberately play ball on the freeway causing a traffic backup because naughty kids know it's impossible to get hurt since all cars are self driving. Robbers will need to put a trailer on their bicycle when robbing homes in order to make their sweet illegal haul because they know that self driving cars will drive them straight to jail. Many EMT, emergency room doctors, and highway patrol will be out of jobs because society will simply not need their services as much.

@@4Kandlez - I worked in the airline industry. When working there I was shocked to learn that it was once common for people to die in airline accidents, but each time there was a tragic accident, the airline industry (basically the FAA) would study why the accident happened and then give guidance to prevent it from happening again. Over a period of decades it is now almost impossible for people to die in an airplane accident. I am an optimist and believe if there is outrage over auto accidents, just like there once was for airline accidents, then the same outcome can happen. I can't help but note that many people feel that tragic auto accidents are impossible to prevent and will continue forever. After experiencing the safety culture that the American public demanded from the airline industry, I disagree.

Similar accident happened to friend of mine who was mad at his mother blaming her for his father leaving. My friend got into a huge argument with his mother late one night grab the keys to her car and took off. Long story short his mom reported car stolen and he was chased by local cops and ended up driving his mom's car under the rear of a stopped semi trailer going over 80 mph and never hit the brakes. Both hands and his head were removed from his body due to accident. He was 13 years old.

Worked in the severe trauma unit in a big city hospital. I saw so many of these types of victims plus thousands of bullet holes and knife cuts that as much as i hate to say it it loses its impact after a while. Its a real balancing act between keeping your human compassion and not letting it eat your emotional lunch. Helping familes of fatal accidents was difficult but a gang banger that only talks about getting even was easy to get over.

We just had a similar accident this week in our hometown. Young man, senior in high school, rear ended a tractor trailer at a high rate of speed. He was obviously distracted and didn’t have his seatbelt on either….not that it would’ve made a difference. The engine in his pickup was through the firewall. It’s been very hard on our community. Hopefully this will cause others to think about safe driving.
