Essentially Japan canceled nearly all funding to tank development after 1936 to 1942 until they were severely outmatched by the Americans and were in a rush to catch up. Not to mention most new tank models were held in reserve in wait for the invasion of the mainland despite potentially being able to stand somewhat more equally against the M4. Awesome work on the model. Speaking of not the best tank, I'm pretty sure that's the original production model variant rather than the newer 47mm variant with a new turret.

Did you varnish at all before applying the AK washes and spirits?

Late to reply, yes you always use a satin/gloss varnish before using any oil paint, the reason why is it reduces surface tension on the surface of the model so the thin liquid will conform to detail/gaps/recesses very well and when you don’t varnish the surface, the oil paint will just spread out away from detail you’re “pin washing” which you don’t want. I mainly do satin over gloss because I find with gloss it reduces tension so much that the oil paint just flows too easily like if you have a model upright, the paint will seep down to the lowest part of the detail

So with gloss, the oil paint won’t stay on vertical detail because it seeps down. Where as satin finish has more surface tension than the gloss so it sticks to detail more

Also just got to that part in the video, in this case you don’t need a varnish first. He doesn’t do a pin wash or a dot filter, he just fully coats it in oils.
