People see saw(lol)and automatically think tree felling. I use the saw back for dust gathering for fire building. (Bow drill what have you) Just to give myself every advantage possible. Enjoyed the presentation. Recently subbed,enjoying your videos.

Very versatile design...I use the back of mine for marking downed trees for chainsawing. That way it makes cutting quick and all the log lengths the same...

...a wrap of Wilson tennis racket tape on the handle works real well...and I also put a lanyard on it..

I am SO glad you tell them things like how the file works, and details like that. Love the details [ans have seen more than a few ruined files}.

The saw is meant for notching wood, tip is blunt for digging.I just put some micarta scales on mine and sanded the handle to my liking. These machetes are great for modding them to your needs.

I like the sp53 and have two of them. I also got the rat 7 with a custom sheath. I like my Ontario products and I’m glad that I got them long ago before things got crazy expensive. I’ll never touch my Tops or Esee blades as those are so expensive now.

That saw blade. One reason perhaps (?) that the teeth are flush with the blade is that a standard wood saw tooth setup would tend to 'bind' in the sheath and eventually damage it.

Good point. I don't know. I have other machetes that do have a wood saw back and yes they are very tough on a sheath. I forgot to mention it in the video--- The Ontario pilot survival knife has a similar saw (IMO) and it was designed to be used by air crew to cut their way out of an aircraft. So that was what I was thinking. But don't know.

Hi Doug ☺ after a tune up I think that would be alot better at chopping, but on oĺd wood I find machetes harder work than sawing, but they are a useful tool, and you can dig whith them as well, as a tip always try to cut whith your body out of the direction of the cut, because the speed you put into the machete if you miss, or get a glancing strike ,you won't be able to stop the swing, and can easily chop into your leg, I was lucky I was wearing high chainsaw boots at the time,and they saved a nasty accident . Machetes do have their uses, but are one of the more dangerous tools to use in the woods, personally I find a saw a safer tool for processing wood, and more calorie efficient , everyone to his own I guess. Thanks for another interesting video my friend, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, and may your God go whith you, Stuart UK.

Hey Doug, do you have any information on that actor that was hiking alone, thanks.
@DougShoeBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
No. Not at this time. You are talking about Julan Sands in California?

It was a guy that was an actor, supposed to be an experienced hiker, was missing the last I heard, not sure who it was. Your videos remind us to be prepared and never underestimate the weather. I’ve done that years ago, look at the weather where you’re going, calling for mild weather so no really warm clothes. Not any risk because I was just working outside but I sure was miserable when the weather turned cold out of nowhere. In a hiking situation, that would be deadly. I’m really trying to practice my fire making skills watching different channels, really like David West Channel too. Thanks for making us aware and to be prepared for whatever comes our way.

@@jerrytalley802 Yep, 'weather forecasting' is not as 'exact' a science as one would like it to be. Thus the old chestnut, 'hope for the best, plan for the worse'.
