I really like this knife. I have the Ontario also. The only thing is that it's been a nightmare trying to get a good sharp edge on it. I'm not the greatest at sharpening knives to begin with. Lost count of how many knife sharpeners I bought over the years. I seen that a lot of people re-profile the edge on these knives. Maybe if I get one of those Work Sharp electric sharpeners, I might finally get the edge I want?? This is one of my favorite knives and I want to be able to carry it with me in the woods and use the crap out of it! Thanks for the review.

I normally just use a wet stone. However, if you try to get this knife hair shaving sharp it is going to lose its edge quickly when you start cutting into wood or harder materials. It might also chip. It's a hollow ground 1095 with an HRC of around 54. You can get it razor sharp but you can't keep it razor sharp, especially if you start cutting up kindling!

@@KnifeChatswithTobias Thanks, that's good to know.

It is typically a softer steel, so i agree with Tobias, don’t try to get a razors edge. I have found that using the stone provided provides a sufficient edge rather quickly.

I agree. It's a strong sturdy blade. While it isn't going to work as well as a knife designed for filleting or boning animals it is a solid, well made, all around knife. So it comes with compromises in performance. The same basic design lives on in the ASEK used in Air Force SERE training as well as being the standard issue for air-crew survival kits.

I got an ontario 3-11 survival air force knife and it looks pretty similar to that one..only the blade is plain no design but the sheath is identical..but is a nice peace that you got there Sr

Looks like a good knife to have, might be your bff, I know my old pocket knife is, were around the same age from the 90's, still looks like a good piece to have for hiking.

I carried an Ontario all over the world. I've got both. I wouldn't turn my hand over for the difference between the two. I also carried a Case Scout/Camper four blade pocket knife.

Where can I buy one of these?

Many Army/Navy Surplus Stores have them. They are also readily available on eBay but the sellers are price gouging there. Chicago Knife Works has them for around $64.

After I left my initial comment I rechecked the date on my knife. It was Nov. 1980, not1989 as I had previously stated.

Pretty cool. Always nice to have a slightly older date!

I bought the same knife but the guard/bolster rattles or clicks when when pushed. Is this normal? If not, how can it be fixed?
@usernameunknown-gq3pf8 жыл бұрын

Conyer Clorox I am a retailer and I'm not sure if it's normal, because all the knives do the same, but the company says it's not. How can it be fixed?

The holes in the guard are just a backup for leashing the knife securely in the even of forced ejection from the aircraft. You'd have it pre tied as part of your kit. This is a serviceable, strong knife in an emergency. But most would agree it's not a first choice for most practical purposes, defense, bushcraft, hunting...etc. it has many prohibitive design features to be ideal for those things. I keep one in my car's center console for emergency egress, seatbelt cutting, window smash and general use if abandoned in a very remote area. One trick I discoverd for quick effective and safe use of the puny sharpening stone is to hold the knife edge up and brace the spine on a stable surface. Then cup the stone with your index and middle finger oppisite the ball of your thumb. Sharpen in an away motion from the edge.

You are correct in that there are better bush craft knives on the market. Thanks much for the info on the lashing holes.

I like those. I have a Camillus that was made in 1988 according to the pommel stamp. I tried the spear thing and it worked quite well. I like your sheath with the metal end as mine did not have one. Here is a tip for aging new, shiny leather. Dump a quart of automatic transmission fluid on it, quite accidently of course. It gives the sheath a deep, rich, rode hard put up wet look. Great video.

I really like the looks of this knife. It’s truly a classic. I knew a former SF soldier back in the ‘80’s who always carried this knife. Back then you could buy one for $25 just about everywhere. It’s the knife I recommend to folks just getting started with the ‘survival’ lifestyle. I’ve given away more of these knives than I can remember. An excellent piece of kit. I still have 2 in my collection. One is an ‘unfinished’ variety that hasn’t been tapered at the top edge.

That butt cap is a beast. I like the smaller size as those big marine ones are at leat 2" to long in my book, to hard to control for camp chores. I'll keep my eye out for one Tobias. Thanks.

While the pattern was based on knife made by Marbles, I think Camillus made the bulk of them for the Government contract. When Camillus closed, the contract was awarded to Ontario. Ontario bought the old Camillus tooling for the knife.

Did you treat the stacked-leather handle in any way, or did your everyday handling of it make it that way? And, if it was the later, how long did it take to get to that point in your video?
