A Special Thanks to Joe at Survival Attitude on Instagram...in this video I look at the Ontario 499MOD and heavily modify and customize the knife as well as the sheath. I do like the style of the pilot knife, but I really do not like the color, nor the upper guard. But those things can be changed...with some patience and imagination...the 499MOD is a great platform to practice your skills to make this knife your own!

It’s your knife, so you can do whatever you want, but that was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen. I still have my originally issued ASAK, which is an Ontario. I’ve only modified two things - I cut off the guard above the thumb like you did, and I reprofiled the edge to a 25-degree convex grind, which makes it sharp and strong. Other than that, I just keep the handle and sheath conditioned and waterproofed with mink oil. I think your guard would have tightened up without the super glue just by conditioning the leather handle.

Just a little tip, you use acetone on the leather to get rid of the protective finish, the leather would’ve taken in the dye much easier and evenly.

I bought one a few years back at Walmart for $30. I now wish I had bought another for that price being they're now out of business and knowing how affordable it was. I love mine.

I'm just glad that upper guard is gone! They don't agree with my typical use and grip technique.

What a fantastic video this is. Great work in modifying your knife. The Color look amazing. Personally I would have made the safety guard a bit rounder, but that’s just me. Excellent video. Best wishes from Australia.

Ever tried sliding O Rings over the handle grooves? I inserted o rings over mine and the grip was much firmer.

Instead of the dye you should have used mineral oil on the handle and sheath. It would have tightened up the loose guard and just looks a lot better.

I stole mine from sere school. I loved mine so much, when it came time to turn it in, I turned in someone else’s. More than 30 years later and I still use mine daily. All original stamped 10-75. Great knives. And the jaggs on the spine is for cutting through aluminum as in aircraft.

Superglue first then baking soda over the wet glue makes the super glue three times harder plus it dries the glue instantly

Had you just bent the top guard over then you are basically able to use it as a thumb pad and don't have to battle the serrated spine with your thumb!

I got one... DEFINITELY NEEDS MOD! It is just not very sharp, due to the very obtuse angle of the edge... THANKS!!! IMHO

So nice. I have a same knife and I tried to use it but the hilt is not fixed as you mentioned and the blade is so dull. Even though I managed to sharpen the dull edge, the blade steel itself awful then it keeps its dull edge. How can I put a sharp edge on this knife?

The best way I found to get mine sharp is with ceramic rods and then a leather strop. I use a belt sander with a Surgisharp belt. It works very well to get a razor edge. The factory edge on mine was ok, not great...and I beat mine up pretty much from adding the patina, so the strop was key.
@MK-uc3ow
@MK-uc3ow 4 жыл бұрын
@@outerlimitless Ah, yes. Using Belt Sander was in my mind but it was hard to take place in Japanese living space (it is often called "Rabit Cages"). In spite of it, I will use Diamond Sharpener then move to leather strops. Thank you for your kind information.

Super glue? Soak the leather handle in neatsfoot oil for a couple of days and everything would be fine.

The metal tang is against the guard, not the leather. Soaking in oil would not help.

Very interesting. I haven’t seen this type of customization except for on knife making channels. This was cool and different and held my interest throughout. Nice. I am curious as to how you’ll get the stone and lighter out of their compartments. I put little draw cords or pull tabs on my credit card anti scan protective pouches that are over stuffed and fit too tight in my wallet in order to actually be able to retrieve them. I just used packing tape to make pull tabs. Worked great.

I like the idea about adding the cords...especially for the stone. Once the stone is removed the lighter comes out fairly easily.

Very cool makes it look like an antique Vietnam war era knife not a kabar but close. Personally I oil the steel with Ballistol for rust etc you get a huge spray bottle for $20 and unlike WD-40 it keeps spraying until the giant bottle is empty and I also believe it works better.For wood like axe handles hammers etc I use linseed oil but for leather I use OBENAUF’S oil works great for that darker aged look depending on how many times you go over it great stuff thought It looks like u got it down better than I do very cool job.

Eric, did you ever try using 3m Trizact 3000 grit emery cloth or sanding pad or whatever you call this thing, a sanding pad? You use it as a strop for making your Knives razor sharp. The trick to it is to use really really light pressure or because of the foam backing the knife will press into the emery foam causing the foam to press against the cutting edge making it dull even though you’re pushing the edge in a stropping motion. This video does a good job of explaining it. I’ve been using it for five or six years now. You apply like no pressure at all to strop or it doesn’t work. I’m talking feather light touch. You’ll figure it out unless you’ve already used it. I got my Trizact pad at Advance Auto Car Part store. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3zCkHl6ZtOZmLs

Just a shame, you actually think you did a good job. Pilot survival knife, the serrations are to cut through the canopy, with a pull back motion. The knife was created at an era when plane canopy’s were made from plexiglass. In the future just collect knives, don’t modify them. You’re not good at it.!
