The holes in the guard is not a bayonet lug . They are for lashing to make a spear . I carried one in Nam and Laos for 2 years . We called them a bolt knife and removed the top of the guard . Thanks for your video .

Regarding 2:45, the sharpening stone in the pouch on the leather sheath can be easily replaced if broken or worn, because it is readily available for the Ontario 499 Knife. Regarding 7:38, the name "Blood Groove" is a misnomer, because its real name is called the Fuller. The Fuller on a blade improves its strength & rigidity by increasing its surface area through a cross section while also reducing its weight. For example, an I Beam has improved strength & rigidity over that of a flat solid bar. Similarly corrugated sheet steel is stronger & more rigid than flat sheet steel. Regarding 8:03, to remove tree sap from the knife, use turpentine and scrub it with a toothbrush. Regarding 9:57. the two holes on the hand guard are not for use as a bayonet. Instead the two holes are for lashing on cords to be affixed to a pole for use as a spear. A real bayonet such as the M7 or the M9 has a large round hole on its hand guard to fit over the muzzle of the rifle as well as on its pommel, there is a spring loaded mechanism to attach onto the bayonet lug on the rifle.

Its not a blood grove its an indent to make the blade stronger.

It's not a bayonet lug, it's for lashing to sticks...

Great video. I especially liked the demonstrations - I laughed at that 1st screw because the same thing would have happened to me. I think it looks way better with the finish coming off

The two holes are for lashing the AFSK to a pole to make a spear. The new Aircrew Survival and Egress Knife has the holes relocated to make it easier to lash.

@MarineWar1, you are exactly right. The AFSK has been around since WW2 I believe and has probably been in more survival scenarios than we can count. I have one in all of my packs.

I also like having that "second point" near the handle on a knife of this type. My SP43 has that type of blade. Handy dandy.

Enjoyed your video and subscribed. Looking to buy one in the Las Vegas, NV area as soon as I can find one. Nellis AFB is close by so maybe a surplus store will have one. Thanks.

I have the 10-73 model which is the same thing you have and it keeps it edge I guess the way you sharpen the knife matters I use a file and then use the bottom of a ceramic mug cause it won't fit in a ceramic knife sharpener

Darrell Abney is the one you have, a Camillus; or is it Ontario?
@darrellabney36297 жыл бұрын
Britt Thomas it's a Ontario
@brittthomas76187 жыл бұрын
Darrell Abney the stamp on Ontarios isn't a date for anything at all. It is strictly the contract number under which that batch if knives were made. Before OKC got the bid from Camillus, the stamp was the date of manufacture by Camillus.

Britt Thomas I know I looked up the serial number and it came back with the date it was made

I never understood the big internet craze with "batoning" through wood with a knife....

Fact is to meet what are my requirements for a "survival" knife a blade must pass what I call the "be all end all" test (One knife in, one knife out). If I were to be caught in a survival situation, weather it be urban or in the woodland outback. I need to know that the knife I am carrying can hold up to any abuse and use. Yes, that means chopping, prying, batoning, etc.

If a knife can't do all that it may be called upon to do, then it's not a "survival" knife. Take the Becker BK2 for instance. A beast of a knife that if need be, can pry open a door. Food for thought.

The design of the USAF pilot knife is outdated. The blades edge is sturdy, but the blade is not full tang. It tapers to an extreme at the handle. This tapered blade can, has, and will fail in a true survival situation. They will bend and in extreme instances have snapped. A true "survival" knife needs to be full tang in order to stake your life and well being on it.
