When the British, who had their settlement in New England, won the 7 years war, they took over New France. But the French culture survived despite their efforts to eradicate it. British came to New France and were joined, after the American revolution, by american loyalists who wanted to remain subjects (a.k.a slaves) to the crown of England. Hence, the roots of Canada were born, from the remnants of the French and the British crowns. That is why we still, to this day, waste tax money on British royalty.

I've always found it funny how english speakers are(/act) so surprise by the swearing of French Canadian. English speaker also use "the Lord's name in vain!". How many times have you heard an english speaker use words/swears such as; Jesus!, Christ! Jesus Christ! God! Goddamn! For Christ's Sake, For God's Sake, For Heaven's Sake. As the person above pointed out, this is partly due to a very large portion of French Canadian roots being Roman Catholic. We also use all the above swears in French but more so in situation of disgust, terror, being surprise, or in disappointment and less so in anger; except maybe for; Christ! Goddamn! French Canadian use the following swears more commonly when angered; Calisse! (from Chalice) Tabarnak! (from Tabernacle) Criss! (from Christ) Esti! (from Host (french. Hostie). Saint Ciboire! or Ciboire! (from Holy Ciborium/ Ciborium (french. Ciboire) Calvaire! (from Calvary/Golgotha (french. mont du Calvaire)). We also use the swear Goddamn! but in a slightly different way instead of using word God we use word Christ instead; Maudit Criss! (Maudit is french for Damn, and Criss is the swear form of Christ). The following 4 are also use but either when a little bit upset or with other above swear or by older generation: Sacrement! (From Sacrament) Viarge! (From Virgin (as in the holy virgin) (french. Vierge)) Bapteme! (from Baptism) Simonaque!(from Simony).

My dad flew small planes and he told me that English is the common language all over the world for Air Traffic Controllers. What is it about Jim that is so universally enjoyable to watch and listen to? He looks like my old social studies teacher...approachable but sort of sardonic. I love Quebec too. Montreal, old Montreal, and the Eastern Townships. Places to stay in the Eastern Townships that are very reasonable (downright cheap for what you get) but elegant are The Ripple Cove and The Manoir Hovie. Breakfast and dinner are included. Both are beyond excellent gourmet meals. Jacket required for dinner. Careful because it is really easy to gain weight. Absolutely beautiful settings.

I went to the old Montreal as a kid. I got a bone from ragu stuck in my throat and nearly choked to death, and my sister spilled a huge lemonade on my lap at a sidewalk cafe, and got to drink warm coke. It was awesome! I looked at the stop sign and it said ARRET and I was like whaaaa? It's so different here.

The funniest thing I ever saw in Canada was when I was with my parents in Ottawa waiting for a tour of the Parliament building. While waiting, a gentleman came out and asked "Does anyone want to take a in french (gesturing for a show of hands)? No one. Okay" and left to return into the building. A minute later, another man came out and said something like "Le tour de Parliament en Francais?" Immediately, several families rose to follow him. Jim Gaffigan: you have my permission to use this in your routine.

I was not expecting your mention of the acadians, thanks to acknowledge the deportation. I am «acadien» and I often regret that so much attention is placed on this tragic historic fate. Good job man, I'm from Québec and I can tell you did your research both on us and Canada. I'm sure even most Canadians don't know about the swear words! If you plan on doing another show about here, I really recommend looking more into the language politics both in Québec and at the federal level, there's a lot of good crunchy uncomfortable material sitting there.

Total population is perhaps 770,000 of which 40 % are French speakers. But I nit pick. Now as an aside, I was in Paris 25 years ago with a bilingual Acadian (business trip) from Petit Rocher NB and we were waiting for a bus and when one rolled up and my Acadian friend spoke French to the driver asking where he was actually going, the driver said(in English) and I quote: "Sir, can you speak English, I do not understand". Afterwards that was a running joke for years.

I've been watching Jim Gaffigan since he was "lighter" and had less hair, (? - yes, life is not fair) and he was funny, witty, and memorable then, only getting better with time. @@Ryan-Petre Man ... Come on. In Québec, english is taught at a young age in every. single. elementary. school. in. the. province. We're in 2020, not in 1920 ... Even my 70 years-old mom who wasn't even taught english in the 1950's in elementary school, she now speaks a quite decent english and can hold a conversation just fine (without being perfect of course) and often travels to USA and the rest of Canada. And she's 70. Younger Québécois people have no problem with english. Apart from school here (elementary + high school + Cégep) , english is everywhere on tv and music and internet. But the french-speaking population outside Québec is thin. As for anglophones outside Québec speaking a decent french ?? VERY very thin (not inexistent but very very thin.)

I (USA) went to Quebec City on a conference years ago. I don’t speak more than a few words of French. I love to wander around off the tourist paths. I walked into a store right behind someone who made the mistake of starting a conversation with the shopkeeper in English. The shopkeeper stared at him and replied in French. They couldn’t communicate so the man left. I said hello in French, asked the shopkeeper how he was doing, in French. He answered in French, then said in perfect English “what can I get for you?” He was offended that the previous customer assumed he could and would speak English. I showed respect by starting in French. That made all the difference.

My late life partners parents own a cabin with a large piece of land at Lac du Otter, Countie Pontiac Quebec, ( One of the westernmost counties of Quebec 90km Northwest of Ottawa) it's kind of strange there as you can tell who is a unionist or a separatist by looking at the flag in the yards if it's a Maple Leaf, unionist, if it's a Fluer de Lis, separatist, if you go into a store, and they speak to you in French you have to reply, Ainglais sil vous plais! ( English if you please!) If they switch tongues, unionist, if they don't separatist, they'll even count your change in French! However if you are ever in that part of Quebec, the bakery in Shawville on the Ottawa River has the best pastries on earth!

Man, as a half-American, half-Québécois, this just reminded me of a great story. My deep-South Georgia-as-fuck uncle came up to visit us, and learned of our swearing, how "fuck" is a word we use as a very mild swear, but don't you *dare* say consecrated host in front of Grandma. Cue to the following Thanksgiving, where we're invited, as is his devoutly Catholic mother-in-law. And so he spends the whole meal being like "oh, Mary, this is a Chalice of a great meal!", or "these potatoes are consecrated host-ly good!", or "pass the Tabernacle-ing green beans, will ya?", and my dad, my mom and myself are cracking up so much, all while this 80-year-old Irish Catholic woman is growing increasingly upset, much to the confusion of all the other guests. What a great time that was.
