I just found this when I was listening to other versions of Onward Christian Soldiers. The video had me nearly crying. I was 15 years old in 1963, and had just got home from somewhere. Mum was crying, and when I asked her what was wrong and she told me JFK had been assassinated, I cried with her. He was such an icon of the day, young and handsome, with such ideals for his country. I think that is when America started it's long slow downhill slide to what it is today. I visited the States in 1971, 1973 and 1976, and it was still a great country, respected by most of the world for what it had achieved during and after WW2. I'm Australian, and for many years after WW2, we were profoundly grateful to the Americans for stepping in after Pearl Harbour, and helping to finish off the Nazis and the Japanese. I hate to think where Australia would be now if the Japanese hadn't been stopped.

Was Biden the last Catholic democrat? Not quite. #AOC is the next generation of Catholic democrat. But quite a lot happened to the Catholic Church itself since this film was made, with #VaticanII. Certainly Lee Oswald is quoted as saying Communism is the best religion, so he had no love for JFK the first Catholic President..

@@FredPena-rd5cf That remains to be seen. LBJ certainly benefited from the assassination but there’s no smoking gun that proves he ordered it.

My paternal grandparents were alive in this sad day. Daddy and mother and my aunt. The 6 children we were sitting on the floor in front of the Floor model TV. Our neighbor Ms Jean and her husband was in that living room ( their tv was broke ) mother and grandmother was making sandwiches and goodies for everyone. Daddy just kept saying this is terrible. Grandpop was puffing on his pipe saying nothing. I was 7yrs old.

Thank you for posting a memory of a time past that otherwise would’ve been forgotten. The ideals for which Kennedy stood come to mind. Ideals worth striving for and reliving again.

@@samyangkam8928 You're welcome. I disagree to the point that Kennedy is forgotten. He'll still be known on the 100th anniversary of this sad event. Thanks for commenting!

@@kevincorcoran6493 I hope so! Because for the last six years now, there’s been hardly a mention in media about Pearl Harbor like it used to be on each PH Anniversary. And it’s only been 80 years ago. I hope we remember the ideals of JFK 40 years from now. We need them now, and we’ll need them tomorrow.

A truly inspirational hymn. Please correct me if I am mistaken: This hymn is more closely associated with the Protestant branch of Christianity rather than the Roman Catholic branch (President Kennedy's faith).
@kevincorcoran64938 ай бұрын
I think probably because he represented the country and not his religion. As he promised in his campaign to do. So you are correct.
@faramir6 ай бұрын
The words were written by Rev Sabine Baring Gould, a Church of England minister in Devon, and the tune by Sir Arthur Sullivan, a well known English composer who wrote a few other Anglican hymn tunes among other things. So you are correct. But they were written for all to share.

I had forgotten that Onward Christian Soldiers was played at JFK's funeral, but hearing it again brought tears to my eyes, it is such a rousing tune to march to, and I think it was perfect for that sad day.

You're comparing a draft dodging coward to a man who insisted on serving(even after being declared unfit to serve) and did so in World War II?!?! I think you need to re-evaluate your choices.
@FredPena-rd5cf2 ай бұрын
@@mackdog832actually no. There are parallells. Both come from money. Had some sx scandals. You may not recall but JFK was smeared pretty badly over the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missle Crisis. He was labelled soft on Communism. He was called an enemy of the state by many. Remember the 'Wanted For Treason' posters? Both men desire to dial back our intel agencies. Both didnt desire greater war. Both defeated establishment politicians. JFK spoke of the dangers of secret socieites. Donald speaks of draining the swamp. So what are your examples of JFK'S disapproval of Trump?
