Beautiful, All instruments are to praise God! The church needs to play these instruments into the temple to exalt and glorify God. In the heaven all together will praise to Jesus, Lord of Lords forever.

I was very young when we played this, and it's good that so many of you are willing to pass such judgements. I look forward to seeing you on youtube in 30 years.

Thank you bishfan for posting. Mom, work hard in CVICU tonight and get back to playing the piano for all of your friends and your family. I still I hear you playing this - having us march around the piano, and off to bed when we were kids, 50 years ago. You are loved.

In response to some of the negative comments below I would like to state some of my own observations. The bagpipes do not have a chromatic scale like the organ, piano, etc., but is tuned to a diatonic scale. They sound like B~, C,D,E~,F ,G,A~?,B~, ( I'm using "~" for "flat" as I don't have the right character on my computer). "Onward Christian Soldiers " calls for accidentals which the bagpipes cannot play, so Diane and the pipers have to ad-lib to play the hymn, which they're are doing a fine job. Also unlike the organ the bagpipes only have a range of one octave. That is why it sounds strange at a few places. I would suggest Diane playing that A natural that the pipers cannot play when they get to that note while they keep silent for that split second, then resume playing. Second idea is to bring in a bunch of oboe players to play that missing A natural, Third idea is to send all the bagpipes back to the bagpipe factory to drill that extra hole for that missing, unplayable note. As for her lectures they are very helpful as the words are the most important to Christian music. Also her lectures are fascinating to learn about the organs themselves, especially the ones in Europe.

We put up with a bagpipe band every year at our St. George's Day celebration. Fortunately they don't just stand up in the chancel and make this kind of noise. Instead, they (happily for us) march in one church door and out the other.

Personally I love pipes and drums especially when they play "Flower of Scotland" and "Scotland the Brave" but I don't think this hymn brings out the best in them.
@garytherocketman92555 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There are several notes in this hymn that the pipes can't hit (no denigration to the band intended). Listen to them play Amazing Grace or Loch Lomond and it will bring tears to your eyes!

Oh that's disappointing...I was hoping they would play in unison rather than alternating between pipes and...well, pipes. I'm both a player of the bagpipes and an organ enthusiast so I was really hoping to hear my two favorite instruments in one voice.

I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SNAPPY SNARE DRUMS IN THE INTRO ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS IS DESCRIBED AS A MILITARY MARCH WAY TO MUCH ORGAN // THIS PIECE LACKS AUDIO CLARITY LIVE PERFORMANCES OFTEN DO
@rileysummers4849 жыл бұрын
If you agnowledge that live performances have poor audio quality why on earth do you proceed to whine about it? Also this piece was adapted here for bagpipes AND organ and from a musical standpoint the two instruments complement each other perfectly.

Arthur Sullivan penned an enduring choral march that is still sung with joy. Ms. Blish, I don't find it improved by ejecting those joyful voices and substituting the sounds of old men strangling cats.
