That's the great thing about using your imagination a bit for your own layout and not sticking to prototype , accuracy and realism or rivet counting or what ran where or when. You can name and number your locos to suit yourself and to hell with the rest . It's your personal layout after all . Well done Bill you have given another aging loco a new lease of life and you can enjoy it too .

Just for your info: 61680 was the number allotted to a GC B5 4-6-0 of 1902, but it was withdrawn in November 1948 without having that number applied. It did run for a couple of years with the number 1680.

If my memory serves me correctly, these tender driven B17's were very prone to the motion locking up in service. That's probably why the previous owner added some weight to the boiler.

Hi Bill. Good job, well done. I love watching you at work as it gives me the inspiration I need to attend to my own locos. As Mr Elliot has stated in this comments section, maybe you should rename this channel 'Train Doctor', or even 'McTrain Doctor' (Sassenach humour ol' boy). May I suggest that as the engine name has a Scottish flavour, it could be run pulling a rake of Caledonian coaches. Just a thought. 👍

What's the point of weighting the loco, given that it's tender-driven? If it was already heavy enough to run smoothly, adding more weight just makes the train overall heavier, giving the motor more work to do. And adding weight high up like that may even make the loco wobble more.
@oobill
@oobill 2 жыл бұрын
The point is to increase downward force on the loco to improve conductivity. Adding weight doesn't make the loco wobble. Wobble is down to uneven track or poor loco construction. With either the conductivity will be improved the heavier the loco is no matter where the weight is added.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 2 жыл бұрын
@@oobill RIght, the weight wouldn't make it wobble _per se_ but, when it hits the unevenness in the track, you now have a greater mass moving, which may go farther. But thanks for the explanation about the pickup -- I see the point, now.

Beautiful looking engine. How long do you run it to run it in? I recently bought the Tri-ang Hornby R056 Iron Duke and took it apart and oiled it so it actually runs now. But it's still a bit noisy. Wondering if it's just a running in thing. Cheers, Mon from Brisbane
@oobill
@oobill 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't put a time on it. Either it'll sort itself after a few good runs or it won't. Noise is usually down to the gears or bearings and running in isn't likely to make much difference.
@lloydpenfold486
@lloydpenfold486 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes a bit of foam stuck to the inside top of the boiler or tender body (making sure it doesn't touch the motor) will deaden the sound, as those places can act as echo chambers, making noise louder.

And probably some of body paint! I actually used a very small amount of contact cleaner to loosen it and then the water and spudger to scrape it away.
@rhiwderinraytube
@rhiwderinraytube 3 жыл бұрын
@@oobill Hi Bill. T Cut will work without taking off the paint. Just dab it on with a cotton bud, let it sit for a minute then gently use a clean cotton bud to remove the numbers. Rinse clean with a wet tissue before applying new numbers. To get them horizontal use a thin strip of masking tape and start with the middle number and work out each side.

Am interested in how you made the nameplate, could you do a video on how to do that please?
@oobill
@oobill 3 жыл бұрын
I did it using QGIS. I use it in my day job so know how to use it very well but I'm not sure I could easily explain or demo how I did what I did as it isn't what the software is actually for and there's a lot to learning how to use it. There are probably lots of graphic design applications that would do a better job but I knew I could do it using QGIS. It's a free GIS application though for maps etc.
@charlie1872
@charlie1872 3 жыл бұрын
OK. It’s a GIS software package? I am familiar with the software as I was in Consulting engineering fir many years primarily using Bentley Software. My first experience with it was “draping” contours over a 3d model . I know it developed into a data driven software that could be used for a myriad of subjects including demographic data collection/development. I guess you could use Photoshop or similar however my copy of PS is crashing at the moment. On another note, I am trying to get my trains organized as I have stuff everywhere while continuing to try to make videos🤣 Keep up the great work👍
