aaa this was really helpful! i'm really looking forward to star rail, and my friend who has never touched a hoyoverse game before (other than a very BRIEF brush with genshin) wanted to play it alongside me, so i knew i'd have to be the one to explain things to him. however, i always get tripped up by the *slight* differences between games made by the same company. i almost prefer it if the games are just completely different, sometimes, LOL. but this already put me on the right track, so i really appreciate it! ty!

Used to play Honkai then quit and still playing Genshin since first patch so I have some knowledge on both but my knowledge on Honkai is small compared to Genshin so this guide is really helpful as Star Rail is part of the Honkai series with Genshin elements mixed in.

the elements in honkai starrail follow the elements in honkai impact where there is genshin there is quantum and imaginary

Ngl this game seems very inspired by final fantasy 13. March 7th is like Serah and Amber combined, the constellations are called “Eidolons” just like how summons in ff13 are called Eidolons, its turn based unlike almost all of Hoyoverses other games. Those are just off the top of my head but as an avid ff13 lover it makes me really excited for this game

As long as they don't make getting level up materials/ascending materials as painful as Genshin, and instead make it like in Honkai 3rd, then it'll be amazing. I only mention it because the UI is VERY Genshin like so I'm a little worried they are going to make this a lil more like Genshin than Honkai. I am a long time Honkai player but haven't played Genshin in a long while because of progression issues. But i'm still hyped!! And this is VERY helpful

I’m also hoping this…playing thru the beta, it does feel grindy like genshin, however genshin hates everything behind specific days (domains & bosses) and bosses you can only fight once a week. I’m sure there will be some things like that in HSR too but rn all materials are earned thru story progression and “calyx’s”(like domains) and the simulated universe (Elysian realm)

I mean it IS way more complex. Genshin has attack, crit, critrate and elemental mastery. Damage types are physical and the elements. You have weapon types: Sword, claymore, polearm, bow, catalyst. The elements react with each other. The weapons have stats and passives. The characters can be leveled and ascended and have 3 skills which you can level. Honkai has 5 types. Biologic, Psychic, Mecha are pretty much rock, paper scissors when it comes to countering each other. Quantum and Imaginary have no relation to the above, but counter each other in a sense that quantum deals more damage to quantum, but less to imaginary and vice versa. And then there are also enemies without a type. Quantum enemies have a quantum state which you need to break by dodging a "quantum attack" and doing one attack, or by using certain skills or ultimates. Imaginary enemies have a core which needs to be destroyed in addition to the hp. If you can't destroy it in time the hp of the enemy are restored, but the health of the core stays. Most imaginary characters have a way which can instakill the enemy if the shield is below a certain point. There are up to 18 skills (most common are 16) for each character plus four skills for certain "sp" characters. But each character has one normal attack, one ultimate button and one weapon skill button, if the weapon has a skill. But depending on the character the buttons can have different effects, some use the ultimate for combos or mode changes. In some cases the mode change is the ultimate, in others it is not. But holding normal attack also triggers a certain mode on different characters. There is no sprinting, but a dodge and when timed correctly or when a skill allows it a special dodge which comes with an effect is triggered. A slow motion (time fracture) is very common. There are 10 weapon types: Pistols, swords, heavy (cannons, rocket launchers, lasers), crosses, claymores, gloves, scythes, lances, bows and chakrams (ring blades). Weapons have passives and active skills, but not all weapons have active skills. Then there are electro, fire, ice and physical damage. Only physical damage can crit. Electro can paralyze, fire can ignite and ice can freeze, but only specific attacks cause said effects, not elemental damage in general. You can impair enemies in order to lower their defense stat against physical attacks. You can "breach" enemies in order to ignore a portion of either their physical (physical breach) or their elemental defense (elemental breach). But this is only the base. There are countless of unique states and multipliers. Then there are many different shield types: Hit-shields, physical shields, elemental shields of each element, "general" shields and much more, some unique to certain bosses. And even this description is only the surface. Describing everything would take more than a few paragraphs. In general the system is much more diverse and complex than the one of Genshin. But who knows what Genshin will offer in the future. Honkai Impact was released in 2016 after all and a lot of the complexity came during the recent years. There were also many simplifications when it comes to the resources. For example a resource for leveling skills was completely scrapped and now you need only coins (thank god, that one was a pain) and there were different foods with different ingredients for one open world. And other items for another open world... But by now the coin system is so broken that at a certain point coins don't matter anymore. There was a time where a coin cap of a bit more than 100 million existed, but by now that one was thankfully also removed.

Water belongs to Ice, Earth refers to gravity. Sea of Quanta, imagine it as soil, everything there will decay and imagine Imaginary Tree as literal tree, the roots feeds on the soil which sprouts new leaves which are parallel worlds, once they died or soon to be destroyed, they fall in Sea of Quanta to rot and be dissolved as bubble world with recorded histories.

Little lore behind quantum and imaginary. The imaginary tree, basically the multiverse, is in the sea of quanta, and "drinks" from it. The sea of quanta tries to drown the tree, that in response branches off more realities. The imaginary creates, the quanta destroys.

imaginary and quantom are like light & shadow in every other game.. pretty sure we gonna get them in genshin too since they are the missing elements that few characters are known to use: dainslief use quantom\shadow powers & main character real power was imaginary\light based on lore XD thanks for the guide :D

Basically, if you've played Genshin and Epic Seven - genshin and honkai star rail are heavily inspired by this for their artifact system with substats, sets, flat stat and % stat - you will know what to do. Also, Epic seven cause the "rune" system = 2:03 and the artifact system, you get this from the gacha and some are exclusive to a character or are specific to a certain class or all of them = 3:31 Just different names.
