Butttt, if someone went "you were sooo close, honey, lmao" then yeah, could be not so good since the tone would be petty. She might have meant well and the correction weren't meant to offend him. Or she could have been a control freak, dunno. But, what we do know is that the guy was fed up with the correcting and then when she was crying, that's when he had his revenge. If something slips up and someone asks "wdym", you can still save yourself and explain that you are not being petty if it wasn't your intention. But the guy doubled-down on what he said. And the way he contrasts himself as being the go-getter and educated one while she is not also paints him in a positive light and her in a negative one. I agree ! And also, I don't know if it's because I'm french, and english is not my native langage. But... I don't see how 'so close' would be a compliment. I Mean... You're criticizing their work even if it's constructive criticism, it's still not a compliment. So she was at least criticizing him over and over again, even when he told her it was hurtful. However he has never said the phrase to her because he thinks it’s a insult. So I want you to logically think in your head if you know your partner find a certain phrase to be an insult and they never say it you might say it but you they never say it. Then in a moment when you’re very upset and need consoling they say that exact phrase ….that you know they find it to be an insult ….to you. Are you really trying to say that she can’t be upset? ……., That’s basically him saying F you and try to hurt her feelings to prove a point lol Yes she’s probably stop saying the phrase of it hurts his feelings but he also doesn’t get the pass to say that phrase to her with malicious intent. He admitted he finds it condescending. Not her. He said, to her and to the internet, that "so close" is condescending to him. How do you walk that back? It's not that she thinks the sentence is rude, it's that he was trying to hurt her. It could have been the most blatantly complimentary phrase in the world. If you're husband tells you "I hate it when you say I'm the most beautiful, kind-hearted person on the planet, it's so disrespectful" and when you are upset, turns to you and says "You are the most beautiful, kind-hearted person on the planet" you know he is disrespecting you. The twin thing you mentioned has actually happened! There were a pair of twins in I believe Malaysia(?) where one twin was caught drug trafficking red-handed, and the second twin showed up shortly after, and in their country, drug trafficking had a REQUIRED minimum penalty of death. They mixed up the twins during the arrest and since they only had the evidence against one twin and not the other, they needed to know which one had been caught before they could prosecute. When they couldn't confirm it 100%, the judge refused to prosecute because she couldn't condone possibly sending an innocent man to his death. LegalEagle did a video on it :]

@UCALs3FU90PMzpBuh1ixqT4Q I think the occasion where he used the phrase was most fitting. The significance of the examples doesn’t matter because it’s true that she was really close to getting the job. Also, OP’s wife was the one who claimed that the phrase was a compliment, not OP. He asked her on several occasions to stop because it made him feel bad, and she should’ve stopped when he asked the first couple of times, so he’s not exactly overreacting. If the wife took offense, then she clearly knows what she was doing. I wouldn’t even consider what he said a jab because he mentioned that he said it unintentionally. That seems fair to me because it’s normal for anyone to pick up new mannerisms and language from people they spend lots of time with.

Just in case anyone is interested about the identical twin thing and crimes: It has happened in the past that identical twins got away with crimes by trying to pin it on the other, as then it couldn’t be proved beyond reasonable doubt that one did it over the other. However, very recently in the Netherlands an identical twin was rightly convicted of rape as they did full DNA profiles for both, which took about two years as identical twins tend to have only about 5-10 differences in their 3 billion DNA letters. He was only released this year because his twin finally confessed in a letter sent to his jail cell. So messed up cause the twin stood beside Kevin the entire time and promised it wasn't him.

The "you were so close" one is difficult because when she does it, it's about minor things, except imagine hearing that every day when you do those things. It sounds to me like she's trying to micromanage him and he clearly hates it, which is valid. That being said, if your partner has just experienced a big letdown, is crying next to you, clearly hurt and vulnerable, and you use this moment as payback... that's just vicious. Even if it really was the first thing to pop in his head, he kept going so at that point it wasn't just his subconscious, he meant to make her feel worse. I understand that sometimes you can have pent-up issues with your partner but kicking them while their down isn't an appropriate or effective way to solve them.
@dustrose81012 жыл бұрын
I mean, he already expressed to her that he didn't like it and she kept doing it. So SHE is already aware of his feelings, and thus no longer has the excuse of ignorance. Also as other people have pointed out, if she didn't mean it to belittle him why does she react like that when he says it...
@weronikalinda49172 жыл бұрын
@@dustrose8101 But I didn't say she was unaware of his feelings, I said that a moment like that, when she had just found out that her dream job rejected her, was an inappropriate time to bring this "you were so close" thing up (and the way he "brought it up", by saying it out of spite, was inappropriate regardless). He saw an opportunity to make her suffer more and took it. I think it's a low blow and not how you handle boundaries in a relationship you care about. Also as other people have pointed out, the tone you use while saying something adds a lot of meaning. You can say "oh, honey, I know, you were so close!" in a supportive way (and noone would ask "what do you mean?") but you can also say it sarcastically, in a mean way. There's ofc no way to judge unless someone was there but it's good to keep in mind

I don't think criticizing his work for his job is a "little" thing. Plus, every "little" thing adds up to be a "big" thing.

I agree with you. The fact that he couldn't console her when she was in her lowest without these kind of thoughts popping suggests to me that the constant "you are so close" from her side damaged the relationship more than they both realized. This requires both to take account of what has being on and how those little remarks are not so little if repeated over time. The fact that she can instantly recognize that saying "you were sooo close" is not the right answer can help her see that behavior for what it is and stop doing it at once. On the other hand, as you said, he should also recognize that this was not the moment to make that point. The fact that he wants to make it sound as if though it was an accident that this was "blurted out", is telling me that he doesn't want to confront the fact that he went for a "taste your medicine" type of revenge moment.

I totally agree on the last one. The lady 100% is cheating or has some illegal side hustle.
