@ThatArtChic16 күн бұрын
I'm so sorry your family is dealing with all that. I work in Oncology and fighting for PET CT scans is an ongoing battle we have. What is interesting is the insurance company denying the PET scan tells us that based on state guidelines, the patient doesn't qualify and needs a series of other scans that must state on the scan report that a PET CT is recommended for further evaluation. Basically stating that a regular CT scan can't provide the necessary information the doctor needs to treat the patient. Yet other insurance companies that also have to "folllow the state guidelines" approves PET scans all the time for patients with a history of cancer. We encourage our patients with difficult insurance to consider changing to a different plan. I know that's not always possible for people in other states or in other circumstances. If it is an option, I recommend asking your doctor (oncologist if it's issues with coverage for cancer related care) "which insurance do they have least problems with coverage or authorizations." Because we in healthcare are not supposed to recommend a specific insurance, we wouldn't be able to say "You should change to this insurance." But a general question of which insurances do you take and which are easiest to obtain authorizations would be sufficient for us to answer. At least in my office.

He went home Monday afternoon with antibiotics and a tiny scar from excellent keyhole surgery. No ill effects. Total cost to me was $12 for parking. No paperwork, no insurance companies, no $10 million PA CEO's, just top-quality healthcare. I pay 29% tax on an income of around $55,000 PA for this quality of healthcare. Our managers and nurses were so concerned about liabilities, regulations, and cutting costs, I'd frequently find ulcers or wounds on patients that had clearly been passed over by other staff but they were afraid to report it but they knew they'd be blamed for it and they'd have to fill out all the paperwork. Someone told me years ago, "You can't teach someone how to live until you've taught them how they'll die." Well I've seen what it looks like when someone is hours from death, and the utter neglect and loneliness they experience is beyond nightmarish. I think for the past few years, people were certain that our leaders, or the courts, or the media would save us. We have been shown time and again, that nobody is coming to save us. @@DanHarkins-jk9mi There are longer wait times for non-emergent care, and that can lead to living with discomfort (things like joint replacement surgeries etc) longer than you might if you lived in the USA and could afford healthcare, but if there's something you need done it gets done. At the end of the day look at health statistics and people in England are healthier than Americans and have a longer life expectancy, so that kind of negates arguments that their system isn't better than USA's. And the whole wait times argument completely ignores the fact that the wait times for many Americans is infinite. About 75 million Americans either don't have health insurance or can't afford to use their health insurance (can't pay the deductibles/copays) so their wait time for care they need is often literally "forever".

I'm an old white woman, living in a household of Republicans, who is a left leaning Independent, so I wouldn't be so quick to assume this man is a conservative. This poor man needs to ditch his Medicare Advantage and go to Traditional Medicare plus a supplement if he can afford it. Unfortunately if the Trump administration or Republicans in general have their way we will ALL be in this state because they would love nothing more than to Privatize Medicare which is "code" for Medicare Advantage Plans.

I listen to at least one of his podcasts a day, but he has no idea of what he's talking about with regards to this Floridian. I myself have lived in Florida for at least 20 years of my life both as a child and as an adult. I still have family in Florida - it can really go either way. And some people just vote for Trump because they get better tax breaks let's not forget that ( I know several retirees in Florida who do that). Kyle should not be making assumptions but he occasionally goes off on things he doesn't know of. Certainly will forgive him for that

Not easy to switch because he’ll need a Medigap supplement plan to pay for the copays. it is not as easy to enroll in Medigap outside of the Medigap Open Enrollment Period and a handful of other guaranteed issue periods. Without guaranteed issue, you’ll likely have to go through medical underwriting to enroll in a Medigap plan-and insurance carriers can reject your application based on your answers. Kyle, I'm a boomer in my 70s now, but I'm more progressive than most young people! For-profit insurance companies have NO place in the healthcare delivery system, because the only way to make more profit is to pay for less healthcare! The simple solution to healthcare insurance - MEDICARE FOR ALL, Single Payer Not For Profit! I wouldn't be too concerned about the general public's lack of remorse in this incident. I'm sure there will be plenty of millionaire and billionaire mourners at his funeral, all secretly relieved that it wasn't them cut down on the street, as they increase their own security! I wonder what it is going to take to change their attitude toward the people of this country? As Bernie Sanders says, when 3 people control more wealth than 50% of the country, when will they not want even more at our expense? When is enough, enough for them? When United Healthcare makes 22 billion dollars PROFIT in one year of others suffering and the CEO gets 10s of millions of dollars in bonuses? Is that enough? If I was one of these billionaires stealing from the people, I would spend a LOT MORE time L@@KING over my shoulder with my head on a swivel! JFK articulated it best when he said that, if you make peaceful revolution impossible, you make violent revolution inevitable. Think about that in a country with more guns than people.

Even the so-called nonprofit companies like BCBS are no better. We need very strict regulations, limits on what the executives can make, a presumption of coverage if the treatment is recommended by a doctor, prohibiting insurance companies from practicing medicine without a license, liability for wrongful denial of coverage (the executives pay personally), standardized insurance contracts so that there is a lot less playing with the terms and conditions. That would help.

Canadian here! Every time I read about someone who is simply denied health care in the US it is as shocking as the last time, and the time before that, all the way back to the first time when I was a kid. If health care isn't a basic human right, I'm not sure what is.

It’s never smart to make assumptions. I live in Florida and my dad who just passed away in his 80’s, an “old white guy”, was a dyed in the wool Democrat and more liberal than a lot of black women. He and my mom instilled a strong belief in us that everyone is a human being deserving of respect and dignity. My mom was a trauma unit and ER nurse who cared for all of her patients with the same compassion no matter their race, gender, religious beliefs or income bracket. Unfortunately the people who run the insurance companies don’t have to deal directly with the patient. That makes it too easy for them to depersonalize the masses instead of seeing us as individuals whose lives matter more than the almighty dollar.

@mgkrewson18 күн бұрын
It has always blown my mind that conservatives hate the idea of the government having certain power over their health, but are more than happy to give that same power to private corporations whose stated goal is solely about making profit. At least with government you have a chance at accountability, but with corporations, they can legally screw you over as much as they want.

Yeah, I was skeptical of the government being able to manage Medicare for all. But it seems they are doing quite well. Just gonna have to hire a lot more people. I have watched it happen.

Turns out I had gallstones, and because of how many I had and their size, I needed surgery. UHC refused to pay because I was covered under my husband. I had never had this problem before. I was able to attend all my specialists and never have to pay a copay or coinsurance because my husband's plan would cover that part. My husband's insurance ended up covering everything besides the coinsurance, which was 20%. It took months and hrs of phone calls, denials, talking to several people, and going into Karen mode to get my reimbursement. Thank God for my husband's insurance. As a doctor, I can tell you that insurance has become a joke as a whole. Regular insurance has made the deductibles so high and unattainable that no one ever reaches it in a year. Their premiums have also skyrocketed. As for Medicare advantage, they don’t approve necessary procedures and the few that they do approve, are making doctors do the work with zero compensation. So they are fucking the patients and the providers. I’m more than generous when it comes to my patients, but when I’m forced to work for free multiple times a day….and have student loans that started out at $180,000, almost 17 years ago and are now over $334,000 after paying on them this whole time….shit doesn’t add up and the whole scheme can go fuck itself. And no, I don’t qualify for Slow Mo Joe’s loan forgiveness…nor do I want it. I just want a fair, reasonable interest rate…especially since I have excellent credit and have never missed a payment.
