the digitakt was purchased as my first drum machine, I went to guitar center thinking I wanted the Roland tr8s, they didn't have it and I didn't wanna wait around for an order I wanted to go home and jam with my MicroKORG, they had the digitakt in store, I was scared of it I said I didn't want something that seemed so complicated to learn, but I did it I got it and came home and watched some tutorials, it is so awesome, id say its my favorite groove box(I also have 2 mpc's now) and the op-1 I did get later once I really didn't need anymore gear, I like it its beautiful and I use it a lot, but I dig the digitakt way more by far, it sounds way better and just does so much more, its a full on synth if you learn to use the fm synthesis which I do use alot, I'm actually here watching this because I've been considering getting a second digitakt just to have all the extra voices... wish it had a built in battery tho besides that id personally say it kicks the op-1's ass by far, but that's just me

I love this video so much. Most review/comparison videos hit you with information overload. This video is like a conversation with a friend and it's so relaxing and well-paced. I just recently bought the Digitakt and find it a bit intimidating. I understand it so much better now. Thanks.

@@SlowHaste I am a graphic designer but I always have melodies in my head and even if the Digitakt is so expensive I feel it will be a great way to get those melodies and beats out of my head and be more creative with them. The Digitakt is really going to be my first piece of equipment. If everything goes well, I might add a few others (considering Analog Heat and Digitone and also the Roland MC-101) but I am going to have to wrap my head around the Digitakt first before any other purchases. Do you think it will be worth it for a newbie like myself who is looking to get started?

Man I thought I was set on keeping my OP-1 after that really cool jam.. I didn’t think the digitakt could please me more, but dang.. I was wrong. Now I’m truly TORN. I love the parameter locking on the digitakt. I love how you can change the parameters for each trigger of a sample. That’s so insane.. I’m really gonna have to consider a switch.. I just love how portable and accessible my OP-1 is, but I struggle with making real music with it because I love grid-style workflows more.. I never liked how you can’t add or remove effects like reverb or filter sweeping to sounds recorded on the OP-1, but I adore how much there is to offer, and it’s battery powered, and the on board mic.. but it’s inputs are greatly limited with just the single aux port and the very quiet headphone jack. The digitakt is insanely organized and efficient, though. This is gonna take time.
@SlowHaste3 жыл бұрын
Just responded to your other comment, but to add - I was never a proponent of grid-based sequencing and I gelled very hard with the Digitakt in spite of that. If you’re a fan of a grid, I have no doubts you would get along with it amazingly.

Great comparison. I really like your videos. Some day I will get a OP-1, but first I will pay the mortgage. Oftentimes I use single-cycle waveforms to create what you might call a synth. There are plenty of single-cycle waveforms in the Digitakt by default you can use. So while it is a sampler it can be used similarly to a synth. If you want polyphony for the synth you you'd probably want to use RK-002 Smart MIDI Cable from Retrokits that switches between the tracks when you play with a keyboard. The Digitakt OS 1.30 allows for selecting tracks for recording which helps to resample (or "bounce") specific tracks as a single sample. Of course, the limitation here is the memory. I know that this wasn't available when you made this video and it's not as easy as bouncing, but... I think it makes things a bit easier. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Thanks again for watching! Good point about the single cycle waveforms, I always forget about those and there are quite a good number of them

Very interesting and nice to watch! I´m really happy with my digitakt, it functions as the "brain" in my workflow. During the day I use it with a powerbank velcro-taped to the bottom, and a BIRDCORD-cable. This way I can play everywhere I want, or use it as a sketchbook on the sofa, or just practice to perform on it, while my girlfriend is watching netflix ;) When I got something ready what I like, I connect the digitakt to the other equipment via midi etc. So it´s kind of like a "nintendo switch workflow" which really makes a difference! (for me)

Nice comparison. Have both after falling hard for synths during the pandemic. I think you captured the essence of both pretty well. I really enjoy both and look forward to getting out and traveling with the OP-1. The workflow of OP-1 is pretty quirky and takes a little getting used to. The manual is also really minimal. Very worthwhile to watch a lot of tutorials to get the most from it. In comparison I have found the Digitakt to be super intuitive but I already some knowledge of synths and step sequencers going in and that might explain why. Looking forward to many more hours with both and finally working my way through making an entire song rather than just loops.

That’s so interesting, I found the complete opposite for myself in terms of approachability! I love being able to bring the op-1 to a new location and make a track on the spot, it creates a visual component that you can recall whenever you revisit the piece.

I so want a copy of Patch & Tweak! - Thanks for the review! What do you think of the build quality? I don't own an OP-1, but have heard that it has to be treated very well (you had it for 3 years, so that's a while!).
@SlowHaste3 жыл бұрын
It’s a great resource/coffee table book! Definitely recommend it. As for OP-1 build quality, I haven’t had any issues. I keep it in a padded case when not in use & have flown with it (in a carry on), brought it to parks/trails, played it in my car, etc. it’s a bit heftier than it looks, but doesn’t have the cold metal ruggedness of the digitakt. I pretty much treat it the same way I would a phone with no phone case on it.
