Biden's relationship with Saudi Arabia has been a colourful one since before he was even president. Considering the history, we look at the recent OPEC+ cuts; and whether this spells the end of the 50-year Saudi-US relationship.

The oil crisis of the seventies should have been enough of a warning sign to the world that making your energy security dependent on the whims of dictatorships is a foolish arrangement. The US shot itself in the foot by allowing the small oil companies to consolidate into a few large companies after the 2008 financial meltdown. Before the meltdown, the US was producing so much oil that OPEC couldn't reduce enough production at a sustainable level to control prices. It basically busted their cartel price setting. Then Saudi tried to go the other way in an attempt to put the American oil companies out of business by opening the spigots full throttle. It did drive the price of oil per barrel to less than $40 but the Americans companies for the most part stayed in business. Then the financial meltdown came and did what the OPEC and Saudis couldn't do, which was to put small American oil companies out of business. Now that the US industry has consolidated into a few companies, they are playing along with OPEC to not produce as much as they could to increase their profits. I think Congress could do something to compel the US oil companies to produce more, but I suspect that the US companies have bought off enough Republicans to prevent any new laws or policies that would reduce their profits at the expense of American consumers. This is one example of why Citizens United was one of the worst decision by the SCOTUS. It changed the power structure in the country so that politicians now work for anonymous wealthy and corporate donors rather than their constituents.

We live in a globalized world. We depend on stuff from other countries, even ones we don't like, but it goes both ways. The sanctions on Russia wouldn't be as effective if most of the world wasn't underpinned by the US dollar. We didn't make ourselves vulnerable, that's just what happens in a world with multiple countries.

The US need Saudi Arabia not only for oil, but also for the denomination of oil trade in US dollars, which creates a huge demand for dollars, massively strenghtening the currency. Regarding reasons for the Saudis to side with Russia, keep in mind that the Saudis are currently reselling Russian oil for a nifty profit.
@skp8748
@skp8748 Жыл бұрын
There would be a GLOBAL jihad if the US attempted to invade Saudi. Even though the vast majority of Muslims consider the Saudi monarchy an illegitimate western concoction US troops in the holy land would be beyond the pale. It would change the global security order. It would be a great opportunity for China to lobby Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan to reject US security assurances. Russia would work alongside Iran to funnel fighters into the region. GCC nations would have to scramble for new security assurances (from the influx of foreign fighters, Iran and the US) Africa would be an arena that would be especially at risk for the US and invariably France where extremists groups would have access to 10s of millions of young angry and destitute young men.
@sau1748
@sau1748 Жыл бұрын
Well, they're not exactly reselling Russian oil, if they were, it would still get sanctioned. What they're doing is more elaborate; they're using the Russian oil to cover the domestic demand for energy in Saudi Arabia, in order to free up all of the Saudi-produced oil for export. That way, the oil being sold is still Saudi and cannot (will not) be sanctioned, and it's cheaper for the Saudis because western sanctions have made Russian oil so cheap that it's better than producing it themselves.

It a 89 year old U.S.A.-Saudi Relationship, it began with a deal between America and Saudi Arabia to establish an egalitarian relationship between the two countries to have Saudi Oil mix with American Oil to boost America’s Economy during the Great Depression which was a better relationship than Great Britain and Iran’s relationship was at the same time, where Saudi’s would get development in exchange for Oil to keep America’s Gas price cheap and Saudi Arabia would be built up. This was strengthened after World War 2 as Cheap Saudi Oil would keep the gas price low, allowing America to rebuild Western Europe. So that deal has connections to the Martial Plan that FDR wrote down and Truman Carried out. Unless by 50 Years you are talking about Nixon’s deal in the 1970’s to fix Oil Prices to be cheap as the Saudi’s used the price of oil as a weapon against the West for supporting Israel in the Yom Kipper War, which created the Petrodollar, I apologize, but the relationship between America and Saudi Arabia began in the Franklin Roosevelt years as the Saudis were a backward weak country that needed powerful friends for its survival against possibly becoming a colony after establishing itself in 1932.

Iran is an enemy of the US, while Saudi Arabia is not, although both are theocratic dictatrships. Biden should have kept his mouth shut during the 2019 campaign instead of virtue-signalling, putting American interests at risk, about some Muslim Brotherhood journalist that almost nobody cared about in America and was smoked for going against the regime in his home country. Now this is the result. Compare that with the attitude Bin Salman had towards America when Trump was President. I'm not saying that Trump didn't have flaws, but forgetting to put US interests first in foreign policy was not one of them.

Most People always miss the main point, and MBS is missing the point of price regulation too. The Laffer curve applies to replaceable commodities too. The moment that a commodity becomes too expensive, consumers begin to try to replace it with something cheaper, thus killing demand for that commodity. They huge oil price hikes will make electric cars cheap in comparison with combustion engine vehicles, once the market tips over, the car makers will discontinue diesel and cheap gasoline cars... This might very well be the last decade of oil as the world's main commodity, soon electricity, hydrogen or something else entirely new will replace it. believe it or not, once upon a time wood was the main energy commodity, then it was coal, now is oil, natural gas was rising, but it will never become the main commodity. we will continue to buy oil for the chemical industry, but the amounts will be far smaller than the current oil demand. putin and MBS have single-handedly sped up the energy transition to renewables and reopened nuclear. You might think: "but people love their gasoline cars", to which I answer: nothing changes people's preferences faster than an empty wallet.

I might be wrong, please correct me if so. I read that the Saudi's were already not producing the amount the were supposed to, like saying they will produce 10 M barrels and only extracting 7 M ( it's an example, not actual numbers ) , and so them saying they will produce 2M less is still above the difference in what they were saying vs doing. to go with electric vehicles you will need a LOT of lithium, which the US is not producing in quantities rn, thankfully is produced in Australia which is friendlier to the USA but will still not solve the dependency problem. it would also screw with the petrodollars, which is not on the USA national interest.

@@endless2239 there are quite a few battery techs being developed that do not require lithium.. of course many are a few years out of mass production but the trend is away from Lithium and to substances like sulfur and other more common metals. Saudi Arabia has no interest whatsoever politicising oil sales. It's really a matter of pure economics and balancing the demand and supply of one of the most critical commodities on earth. Especially with a very likely harsh recession around the corner. Most markets are dealing with very high uncertainties, but only Saudi Arabia has the capability to arrange and stabilize the oil market and minimize such uncertainty around such precious commodity
