my father bought an admiral in 1965, for me 6 years old, was like a spaceship
@autochampwandelen3 жыл бұрын
Spaceship you say? I guess the interior design implies that (a common design cue I've noticed with almost every GM car from the 60s and 70s). If you wanted a real spaceship experience that time, you should have ridden inside a Citroen DS!

These sedans were VERY popular on the island where I grew up. In my opinion the most elegant car ever made in Germany.

One of the handsomest non-exotic cars to come out of the 1960s. And the last Opel designed for the European/German market in the USA at the GM Design Center in Warren, Michigan, where GM had special studios handling the styling of Opels, Vauxhalls and Holdens. They would ship clay or fiberglass models over to GB or Germany so that the staff there could make production tools from those master models and handle details like headlamps, interior trim, badging and other finishing touches. In 1962, Opel opened its own design studio, headed by Chevrolet chief designer Clare MacKichan, who was also responsible for the design of the cars featured here. Prior to 1962, designing Opels was the responsibility of the Chevrolet Studio, while the Pontiac Studio handled Vauxhall. Subsequent Opel cars were designed in Germany, starting with the Kadett B introduced in 1965.

My first experience of the Opel kapitan was one of my dad Sergeant's picked us up at Frankfurt Germany to go to Bamberg and he was in the left lane to get around a slower vehicle and I'm looking out the back window of this Volkswagen van I saw the light flash meaning get the hell over and it was an Opel kapitan. It damn near took the corner off of the Volkswagen van barely missed us LOL. The thing about Germany the bigger the motor the boys are going to tax you so if you had one of those you made some money.

my dream i wishd id had 7 diplomats. 5 käpitans and 2 admirals
@autochampwandelen3 жыл бұрын
Ahh the Diplomat! Nice video! I also did a video about the Opel Diplomat in my channel and I must say, it looks like an American car (Chevy) which is no surprise since GM owned Opel that time. The Opel Diplomat had big potentials, it was one of the only cars to offer a huge engine in the European market. It was meant to rival the Mercedes S class. But it seems like time has changed, GM changed strategy 24/7, so to this very day, nobody knows what GM is up to, but they left the European market, and now they plan on shutting down Holden too. I hope the PSA group make the new Insignia better! With styling cues from the Diplomat!

Opel Diplo A as Coupe with V8, more than rare.......
@greghunicutt9856 Жыл бұрын
Although Opel was owned by GM back then it appears that the mid-‘60’s Plymouth Valiant and the late ‘60’s AMC Classic got much of their styling from the Opel’s styling, which was similar to its North American sibling the Chevrolet Nova. When one can’t design it as good as GM use to, then steal the styling.
