For us, The movie was "required Reading". Most likely because it is a really good (albeit campy and hyperbolized) representation of soldiers, Wash out lane was more metaphorical than physical, when you're high on adrenaline you get super moto just like the film, everybody is to an extent trying to out macho eachother, then (being somebody who missed afghanistan by a few years) I always heard the stories of how excited guys were to see combat until boots hit the ground and shit hit the fan and even despite that...they'll all seemed to revere it with a strange fondness. The book...god I'd have to reread it, it's been ages and my copy was taken from the duty desk.

I think Starship Troopers is recommended officer reading because in that book, only the best reach officer. There are no chumps as officers, because a mediocre officer gets a lot of people killed. A basic soldier operating a Marauder suit is a one man army on its own, so an officer commanding those guys has to be cream of the crop. Thats the idea they try to convey.

The entire book is about responsibility and what it takes to lead effectively. also Rico goes through the war thinking his family is dead only for his father to show up at the end as acting 2IC meaning his father changed his mind in what it means to volunteer. Edit It was first written as a short story for kids.

100%. All my gripes aside, I really see where leftist writers are coming from and the kernel of truth there, about the importance of choice in your life and not allowing yourself to be bound in a situation that despises you. But like any good idea, you have to really think about it and put in the work to do the idea justice. _Steven Universe_ and _Guardians of the Galaxy_ have the same core idea at the heart of it, both are written by someone with a history of pedo "jokes". But the one of them accidentally makes the conclusion "anything's forgivable as long as you feel sad about it and throw certain people under the bus as a scapegoat", the other draws the conclusion "people aren't always one thing, and deciding whether or not you can forgive them is a messy business that needs time and respect."

_Apollo 13_ is the gold standard in historical event movies. Nails the characters, nails the time period, WHILE giving huge focus to the actual science and events of the incident so you walk away knowing more about what happened. _Oppenheimer_ did one half of that well, but it's no _Apollo 13_

Spot on, my favourite film of all time and definitely one of the best “based on a true story” films ever. The changes which are made are largely for narrative streamlining and character compositing, but it still does the event, characters, situation and time period as a whole excellent justice!

I was very vague about my question cuz KZbin super chats suck but my initial idea will revolve around them needing to evacuate their village due to a massacre and they have to survive together but the brother is tasked to protect his sister so he has a more stern outlook to their survival while the sister will have a more naive but pure outlook to it.

The whole redeemable villain problem is because modern writers are horrible people and they need to project that they’re actually the victims because their Dad yelled at them one time. So just like self inserting the hero being shitty because they don’t know how to be heroic themselves, they need to write the villains as redeemable so the idea of them doing bad stuff isn’t bad anymore, because they’re always the victims.

Could be... I look at it like we gad the heroic age of good heros and bad villains, then we had the age of the anti-hero where good guys did bad things for good reasons (Wolverine is solid example, but there are more). Amd now we are in the age of the non-hero - "good guys" have no moral compass, bad guys are redeemable, and story is political advertisements. Varying degrees, of course, but this is largely true. And I think this is a reflection of our times here in the real world... name a genuine hero in the world from the last 20 years. Someone not maligned by the "other side of the aisle"....

For Starship Troopers, the book is very, very different from the film - as I remember it's more pro military service, pro-soldier and has none of the film's parody of patriotism.

You're not wrong, in a way you're right, but I don't quite understand why people (probably just leftists honestly) always label it as right wing/fascist. It's weird, like taking the content of a story and using it to say that's the writer's perfect world. Just because it doesn't have the satire of the movie, doesn't mean Heinlein was arguing for this world, I just take it as a thought experiment up for discussion.
@gurahamu4718
@gurahamu4718 Жыл бұрын
@@chillpengeru Indeed, and that's why I remember it as more pro-service. He didn't make the soldiers out to be stupid at all. I should go back and read it again because it was a very good book as I remember. It's actually odd to think of this film as an adaptation of that book. Both good, but not the same thing.

Please check out the animated series, The Venture Brothers. A very well written show, heavily inspired by old school Super scientist/Super villain shows, like johnny quest. It follows both the antagonist and protagonist, with deeply remeberable, and relatable, characters. Who doesn't love the villain, The Mighty Monarch, his wife, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, and the his main henchman, 21. It all happens in a persistent universe where we get to watch how character flaws and mistakes play out over the long running show. Its the greatest superhero show out there, without being about the superheros (who often operate in a moral grey area, much like most the show).

I hated the villains, plot and dialogue from both seasons (even while it was airing) and 7 was a return to quality for me. I didn't find out till later that Joss left and Marti Noxon took over for 5 and 6. She also made Point Pleasant afterwards, one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever seen.

Space Cop is flawed, no question. Many aspects of the movie are pretty good, even when you don't consider the history of its making. But it is dragged down by some of its aspects, and that's a pity. I wonder how Space Cop would have turned out if the production hadn't been drawn out over three years and if RLM hadn't done almost everything by themselves. In other words, if they had a much bigger budget, much bigger production team and would have focussed solely on the production and not worked on the movie aside from all their KZbin shows.

I'd actually be interested in a full conversation about the most "cultured" movies. It's interesting hearing just this snippet because there's this internal struggle in mauler's voice as if the world has gaslit all of us who prefer actiony or campy movies but the real cultured ones are largely french new wave nonsense or something. To be clear, the man has his values straight, he thinks the movies he likes have artistic value and I'd say it's true. I caught a snippet of the guy on his stream that was like super critical of the drinker as if all he watched were big set piece action flicks (his whole thing seemed to be him walking back all of his statements as well to be fair) but, obviously that's not true, however, the bigger point is that something like Predator, does not lack artistic value. I believe it's true there are facets of film that are objective, even story has things we can point to as being objectively bad but there's also a level of subjective elements as well and not every "Cultured" movie has to be some pretentious low budget snore fest from 1955 that gained popularity because the director was so insufferably pretentious they made a name for themselves. There doesn't have to be a "this challenges current messages or cliches" film to be culturally relevant or artistically relevant. Some would argue there's enough art in the imagery of predator that it doesn't need any of that bullshit. To be cultured, truly cultured in a more finite sense you'd watch movies that have shaped our culture, Like Alien, Like predator, Like star wars. Though it's true you follow that line further back and you'll find things like Hidden Kingdom (correct me if i'm wrong) which inspired star wars and you'll find kurosawa who's artistically really good and his movies or watching his movies can be or be seen as fairly pretentious, and you'd certainly have to try to watch citizen kane and see if you like it, if only because of how many people reference it as being relevant to film history. Then if you want to go a bit further with the definition of cultured you'd try to experience foreign films from now and through history to be able to view things from different cultural perspectives, but I bet you that allot of the greatest foreign films don't make the IMDB top 250.

I like a lot about it but it doesn't work. Message wasn't distilled into a cohesive message; world-building, while aesthetic af, makes no sense; battle strategy and basic geography is broken. I wanna like it, but it needed heavy revision in the writing. It's a story that would be hard to make work _even if it was well-written_ and the execution wasn't there to help carry it. I adore the visual design of the movie though.

I used to be a huge James Bond fan growing up with Roger Moore and Sean Connery, and they are really the only people I would consider James bond in Film, but most of the Bond films were at least entertaining. I couldn't sit through a single Brosnan Bond movie. just to keep playing devil's advocate here on one piece: isn't luffy a mary sue? doesn't the plot have endless contrivances? and to drinker more particularly: don't you think the show could have used more moments of downtime with the crew? don't you think that the marine and the fishmen storyline takes away valuable screentime with our heroes? did we really need as much as we did? since. you know. you're a writer.

drinker superchats a comment asking if he finished one piece. drinker had done his review before watching the full show. on a panel, he said that he had seen episode 6 maybe. and this was a bit after his review. they were talking about episode 7 and drinker hadn't seen it yet. the superchat sort of asks him for his wrap up thoughts, but it feels like he sort of deflects. he gives a rundown of what he has done about it: he released a review, he has talked about it a lot... this was an opportunity to give thoughts on the show on completion, which i have not heard him do because i have never heard him confirm he finished watching until now. it would be easy to play poker with drinker. he's a little easy to read on emotions.

12:14 "i don't feel like myself or drinker have been that extreme with praising one piece". by saying this, and drinker agreeing afterwards, you can assume that these two are trying to say in response to the superchat of overpraise of one piece's source material being shakespearean level... that neither think that one piece, as a total franchise, so far is writing that would be considered a masterclass. fun. definitely. good. sure. but A MASTERPIECE? they will not stand with you. but they don't explain why. this is the best that they hide behind. "i already talked about it." "we don't overpraise one piece either." ... especially when nerdrotic is so vehemently for one piece being perfect. the guys who MAKE A LIVING CRITIQUING... fail to summon their critiques. i just feel like you two are giving off beta vibes. waiting for the safe spot. and it's a little disheartening. i'm not mad. just disappointed.

and to shut me up, all they would have to do is critique one piece. and it would go against the sacred cow of mauler. and maybe the audience doesn't see drinker's ability as a writer as a sacred cow, but that would certainly damage potential professional relationships. because it would show that mauler's critique is like a pokemon did the move reflect and mauler damaged himself with his own attacks. yeah. fudge you. i'm taking it there. gen 1, best gen, baby. uh. tf am i saying. and drinker would show hollywood how he's not good at breaking down or re-building story scripts. i mean. do you have to listen to me? no. but. would probably help both of you. a lot. you can't say that the crazy guy commenting doesn't care. but crazy and caring is probably a bad combo.

They could have had more "down time," but to what end? They had limited screen time, and the fishmen arc finishes Nami's introduction started in the first episode, rounding out the season nicely. To make room for "down time" (plenty of which is had in Usopp's and Sanji's arcs), they would have to add run time. As to Luffy being a Mery Sue.... i mean... That's sort of a trope of this style of story. "Shonen" leads are often OP or at the very least, do the DBZ/Goku arc of Beat bad guy - get beat by new bad guy - train/get new tool or ability - level up - beat bad guy - repeat.... Honestly, though, it's the same thing that happens in Yojimbo and Fist Full of Dollars, to a much more realistic degree.

nolan's movies have partticular things. like him doing a scene where a crowd is being held hostage. or him playing with a concept of time warp. flipping cars. elaborate practical sets. i can appreciate what nolan does but i don't like his choices, especially for batman. is that really batman on screen? or nolan? and then watch his other movies with how he chooses to show action. and i bet the james bond will just have the veneer of james bond. but it will really just be nolan doing what he wants. like what gunn is doing to dc. these fudging hollywood morons. locusts. descending to pick clean the bodies of beloved franchises tethered to the corporate machine. corporate executive: "quick, get someone to sell the peasants nostalgia!" enter director that they are betting on: "can i do whatever i want? yeah, sure. no need to respect the audience or source material. my sandbox now. thank you, hollywood." i hope they burn everything. and the peasants that they tried to pander to create things that eventually destroy their legacy industry. that fudging town full of deviants and abusers. trying to parade morality around while they are hiding the guiltiest on earth. but the vitriol is just hypocrisy. i really would just like to hit cheat mode on life. and i would come to invade this pathetic entertainment landscape. the little mermaid cost $300 million dollars? let me ask drinker, mauler, nerdrotic, rippa, shad... what could YOU do with $300 million dollars? i just think all of you could come together to create an incredible fundraiser. shad has connections to book printing. rippa has his own production for comics. you guys have so much talent and resources combined. i bet you guys could fundraise millions of dollars for an indie movie. and because it is an indie movie, you could reach out to sag actors on strike periods. your advertising is free with your own audience. if anything, they will superchat you during events and reveals. i think you guys could create your own mcu. i REALLY think you guys should think about it. enough with the woke nonsense. the people are starving. they already trust you. you're already leaders. finally achieve the next form of the fellowship.
