The Rings of Power is a story of boring, pointless mediocrity, with a cast of unlikeable characters doing things we don't care about. What are we even supposed to gain from this show? Why does this bear the Lord of the Rings name? How many times has JRR Tolkien spun in his grave at the thought of this nonsense?

It's a theme in this Rings of Power series: The blurring of good and evil. Several characters have talked about needing to touch the darkness and generally most characters are totally confused about what's right and wrong. Pay attention and I'll guarantee that you'll see this theme in almost all episodes. It's quite vile and anti-Tolkien but also quite interesting, because it must say something about the writers and about the time we live in. The show is one big confused mess - not only about plot lines, logic and dialogue, but also about morality.

Moral ambiguity seems to be a real epidemic in the "current year", and it's ruining a lot of things. I'm not going to root for the proto-Hobbits when they're portrayed as being so callous and cruel, regardless of what they might become later.

I 'm starting to see Saroun as a maligned and misunderstood reformer who's really trying to make Middle Earth a better place. The orcs show more compassion for there own kind than the harfoots. Liv Tyler on Arwen: "You don’t have to put a sword in her hands to make her strong." I was recently watching the Two Towers extras and stumbled on the “From Book to Script” segment where they talk about how they realized they didn’t need to make Arwen fight. Liv Tyler specifically says, “I went right back into the book and into the appendix and what we came to realize was that you don’t have to put a sword in her hands to make her strong. And where we’ve come to now is all these true elements of who Arwen is. I mean this is an incredibly powerful and fearless woman filled with so much hope and belief, and that is strong enough.”

That point is certainly true but it's not really true with Arwen. They gave her the scene in the movies where she saves Frodo which was actually Elrond if I remember rightly when I read the book, since he controls one of the rings of power. Other than that, she is purely there as motivation for Aragorn. She doesn't really exemplify strength, more so love and goodness than anything else.
@Aikinai
@Aikinai Жыл бұрын
@@shadysorkin9214, in the book, it was Glorfindel that saved Frodo, but introducing him would have been extremely confusing (doesn’t really make sense in the book either) so they swapped him out to give Arwen something to do. When they originally pitched the movie, she was going to be a warrior version of the character and fight in Helm’s Deep, but this interview was about how they changed their mind and went back to the original character mostly.

She speaks telepathically to (and can read the minds of) elves, dwarves, men and hobbits. She's seven feet tall (or 6'5" depending on what conversion you believe) and she LITERALLY glows in the dark (her hair shines so brightly that it inspires Feanor to make the silmarils). When she raised up the power of Lothlorien, even Sauron and his forces were unable to enter the forest (presumably some sort of magical "barrier spell"). This is a character that needs to be "testosterstoned"? Im sorry, but warrior princess Xenophobriel is a wimpy little brat compared to the Galadriel I know and love.

Isildur was meant to be the best of us. The most resilient, the most fair, the most incorruptable. Thats what makes his fall so impactful. Sauron can corrupt absolute. If Isildur can fall, then who can stand? But this show is making it look like hes easily corruptable and incompetent. The man we are following is just making me go, "yeah, i can see how he falls". And that is a crime. We should be watching him and going, "noooooo. I know where you end up and i dont want you to! Isilduuuuuuur!" Its the classic breaking down the heroes when we never asked them to.

Hearing about Guy-ladriel is making me really appreciate Tauriel from the Hobbit movies. Yes, she was a fanfic character, who embodied every trope a self-insert....But she was a good fanfic character! Her motivations and characterizations made sense, she mostly fit into the world, and she was usually a periferal character who joined others to participate in the real story. Just imagine if Rings of Prime had been about a Tauriel-type character. She could wander around, be a bad-ass, and then meet up with real characters, and help them during the real events, and we would use her perspective to connect the big events, or to give them context. I'm sure there are hundreds of fanfic writers who could have pulled that off...

The other thing Tauriel had going for her was that she was likeable. She was confident without being stuck-up. She smiled, had a sense of humor, and never showed gratuitous cruelty. They Stated that they wanted to create a version of the Lore which reflects our current world. Now, they give the "Hero" of the Story character Traits that would make her a, still shallow, believable villain. They give the Haarfoots, the "good guys, Traits that are Evil. In all reality though they can’t kill art without our consent and participation. Realistically even if every movie ever produced for the rest of time is garbage there is enough quality already in existence for people to stay entertained for a life time. The same is true for pretty much every art medium in existence. Most music today is garbage but there’s nothing that forces you to listen to today’s music. Historical works of art have never been more accessible to the common man, they can only destroy the art if we allow and participate in it. Instead of watching 8 hours of this garbage spend 9 hours watching the extended LOTR or spend however many hours reading all the books, encourage others to do the same. Either these companies listen to market forces or eventually they run out of money. There have been plenty of dark ages in human history when a small segment of the population through much sacrifice and effort kept art and culture alive, maybe now is our time. Architecture is maybe the one exception to this since enjoying pictures of beautiful buildings cannot compare to the experience of being in one and most people will never have the opportunity to make design decisions in a building. I hate modern architecture and there doesn’t seem to be much one can do about it.

Imagine if Amazon had spent a billion dollars investing in people who actually cared about The Wheel of Time. How popular could that have been? And they wouldn’t be limited to just the glossaries at the ends of the books. They could have had a home run of an epic series, but no. Feminism first, profits worse. And now they’ve pissed off the Tolkien crowd, which is a huge fan base. I disliked The Wheel of Time Amazon series so much that I finally broke down and decided to read the actual books. Now I’m midway through book four thinking, “It’s a crime that they didn’t adapt this better. They could have made a fortune if they’d done it right.”

These shows are written, made and acted by boring people who are populated with blindly following ‘the message’. They are the kind of people who go with the crowd and do nothing interesting, they have no character and so have no ability create characters or stories. They know how to congratulate themselves and tell you what to think and that’s it.

It’s just a show that’s merely content and nothing more.

The writers room is full of activists pretending to be artists. The thing is, you can’t ‘learn’ creativity. You can nurture it, but you can’t manufacture it. You either have it, or you don’t. Pretending a writing degree makes you an artists is laughable. Hendrix couldn’t tell you where an A is on the fretboard.

Totally agree, my point is also that the people behind these shows and most of Hollywood/entertainment industry live sheltered lives. While many of the great writers and creatives of the past lived rather interesting lives. They had stories to tell based on experience out in the real world. Not from a university lecture hall or schmooze parties in Hollywood mansions. The current crop seem to only exist within their own ideological bubbles.

She-hulk and Rings of Power in the same year... 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ouch! Hollywood really should use 2022 as reference : "Here's what we WON'T DO anymore"

We all love flawed characters, but they have to at least be likable. Someone like Tony Stark is deeply flawed. He's arrogant and abrasive, but man, he's a hilarious genius. If Galadriel is actually flawed in the minds of the writers (jury's still out), that's great. But they haven't given us any reason to like her.

💯💯. Your characters should be both flawed, have weaknesses and vulnerabilities as well as be likable.
