Where I’m from, open carry is legal. We get “suspicious with a weapon” calls all the time. First thing we ask dispatch is what’s suspicious about them. If the person says they’re just walking around with a gun on their hip or a rifle slung over their shoulder, we just send 2 deputies to make contact and check on the person to make sure they’re in the right state of mind.
@PaulHarrell
@PaulHarrell 5 ай бұрын
But you still send two deputies. I get the need to respond. Trust me I understand the politics and the "what if we didn't respond" and the person had dangerous intent. Of course it always depends on the enviroment that person is in. Roy
@Ovokor
@Ovokor 5 ай бұрын
How do you define "right state of mind?" Since the 80's cops have no legal responsibility to defend the public and recently cops gained the ability to intentionally shoot the hostage. Obviously cops are not for public security so why respond?

I have open carried since I was 16 years old working on farms I originally carried a Remington 1858 Percussion revolver Which I almost had to use during an robbery of a store I was in. Once I turned 21 I got a modern semi-automatic handgun but I still open carry now at the age of 23 and I've never had any issues. I live in Western Washington in an urban area so I'm not just out in sticks, The biggest thing about open carry is having the confidence to do it, knowing the laws in your area and having good situational awareness which you should have in the first place if you're deciding to carry a firearm.

I would like to add just one thing here. I too, live in Oregon, and yes, like Roy here I open carry in the woods all the time. And I do support anyone who open carries, but one thing you should keep in mind while open carrying. Yes, everyone can see you are armed, including the "Bad Guys" who may want to take the opportunity to sneak up on you to knock out to steal your gun. This is why I conceal carry in city's like Portland, I do not want the attention. Just a thought.

There is a professional window cleaner who I occasionally see who open carry’s a .38 cal mare’s leg shorten lever gun complete with holster. I’ve seen him in Greensboro NC while I was having breakfast at Jake’s Dinner. This gentleman’s nickname is “cowboy”. Seemed fitting. He was just quietly working and kept to himself cleaning the windows. The reaction of some of the patrons was interesting. Saw a few nods in support of this hard working fellow. It did leave a striking image in my mind. I found it a positive memory.

Thank you for the video. Upfront I want to say I agree with the idea of open carry. In Texas under the Concealed Carry Permits had a restriction that incidental viewing of the weapon was considered illegal. If a weapon was in your jacket and was exposed when you reached in to get your wallet. The person 2 checkouts away saw the weapon. Then the weapon wasnt concealed. Open carry although it fully permits carrying a weapon on your hip. It was mainly passed to eliminate the inevitable calls to 911 when somebody saw one in somebody else's waistband when reaching up to a high shelf.

-- Don't know how I missed this. Apologies Roy, Paul. Answering as I go: My idea of open carry. Sometimes I carry a shield plus 9mm in an inside the waist holster, but have my shirt tucked in on that side so it can be seen, but not so well as people would immediately notice. Don't want to make people nervous, so, good if they miss it. It's there if you're looking, however. While you're talking about the 10mm, I appreciate you driving 'standard capacity' home. I also carry an 1911 in 10mm Auto. I was so-so about the 10mm, then put it through a 1911 and it all came together. RIA Tach 1, single stack mag. I've got 1911 into the thousands, but this RIA - maybe the cheapest in terms of cost - gun I own checks all the boxes. 10mm auto is something I'm still trying to master in a hazard situation. Only have 60 some rounds of it in my lifetime. Least I'm past the flinching phase :) Thumbs up, Roy.

Some thoughts to consider for those who spring negative thoughts to open carry: A fellow open carrier once wrote to me a rather good list of reasons defending the practice, and I find it best to just state it directly in his words rather than rephrase. "so long as those who carry their guns refuse to do so openly, society will become more and more sensitive ("hoplophobic"), businesses will put up more and more "gun free zone" signs, and politicians will make more and more anti-2A laws. Seriously, people who do not carry guns only see them on cops, or on TV in the hands of bad guys, so it makes sense that they'd react with "take them from the bad guys and make sure only cops have them". If we want our gun culture to change, we need to give it reason to change. And people associating guns with perfectly responsible citizens is how we get that change. Secondly, I'd rather deter a crime than have the element of surprise after one already starts. The vast majority of criminals are looking for easy targets, and taking on an armed citizen adds complications for them, even if they have the drop. The risk of someone stealing the firearm can be greatly mitigated through a proper active-retention holster, along with proper situational awareness and maintaining control of the firearm (think resting your arm on top of it if someone is behind you, etc.). As for being targeted first in a crime, that's highly situational, as you would have to be in their line of sight when they enter the building. If someone tries to shoot up WalMart, for instance, I'm probably half-way across the store when they walk in. But again, if they do have line of sight on me, odds are they don't commit the crime with me around. Thirdly, it's just more practical and comfortable. A quicker draw, and I can actually bend down. Feels more patriotic, too. Like, why should I have to hide it like it's some sort of sin? Don't get me wrong, I think a person should be able to choose which method works best for them. " Again, not my words, but I find open carry to be a rather good practice that will help out society, and that the "target on your back" is largely an urban myth.

I totally agree. Rights need to be regularly, responsibly, and openly exercised to maintain them in our society. If too many people become hoplophobic and decide to infringe on the right to bear arms, then "muh concealed carry surprise" won't save you in the end when you're sentenced to prison for defending yourself with it.

Ready for the rabbit hole? The police should never walk up and ask what you are doing. The 911 dispatchers need to be retrained too. "He has a gun!". The reply is "Ok. That isn't a crime. Is he robbing people or shooting people and property?" That is how far gone America is. And there will be no recovery. Great job on the opening monologue Roy. Spot on correct, just like your brother.

To Paul: I never comment much on KZbin, but I have watched your videos for many years now and have always thought you put out some of the best and most helpful content for people. My first and probably still favorite video was the Miami shootout. I pray for you and all your loved ones, and will continue to pray for you regardless of outcome. Know that you've been an outstanding role model for many and you have left a tremendous impact on the firearms community. Semper Fidelis and fair winds and following seas, sir.

On my rural property and in my house I have a 1911 on my hip. Happens to be my favorite Pop Tarts on the table when I was younger. Roy you remind me of my dad who recently died who was a cop from 1957 to 1989 between the USAF and Sheriffs Department.

Good job on the weight loss, Roy. The result is already visible, don’t stop, I myself lost 20% of excess weight in a year, it’s really worth it. Considering your strong posture and pronounced back (training at an earlier age is visible), losing excess weight will be downright impressive relative to your appearance.

Paul has a vid on this. You are correct. .357 has the advantage of A LOT of loading options and if you buy .357 you get it, not a .38 spcl loading. 10mm has more rounds, guicker reloads, and hot ammo.

personal opinion, I only open carry when I am in the deep woods, and I carry a Ruger .44 mag revolver...enough to stop most bigger wild animals. When in urban settings I NEVER open carry and always carry concealed....again my opinion, open carry is like wearing a shirt that says "Shoot ME first!!" Never give the bad guy any advantage.

@@jimjohnson6260 I agree with both of you that carrying a gun openly does put a target on your back. That being said, living in a free country puts a target on your back to every tyrant on the planet. I'd rather be dead and free than alive and cowering. I refuse to ask for permission to observe my God given rights and that's why I won't apply for a conceal carry license. Open carrying also sends the message to every other rational citizen that isn't yet carrying that "hey, he's got a gun, maybe I should carry a gun too!" It's setting brush fires of liberty in the minds of your fellow man in 2024. Does it make me a target? Yeah. And you know what? If I get killed due to being targeted for carrying, well, maybe that will wake up my fellow man to actual stand up and defend his liberty instead of hiding it under a rock. (I'm not saying CCW folks are hiding it under a rock) But as our founders said, "An armed society is a polite society" and we all agree we need more politeness as a society! I have yet to have a bad interaction with a single individual as well, the cops have never been called. And I am in a very, very, uhhh.... let's just say, anti-God given rights city.
