Thanks...I really enjoy your talks and research...There is something special in the roll of that die😊

Thanks for posting. I always prefer open engine games, although I have enjoyed closed engine games, primarily Action PC. One area I have not seen discussed is that some people like the 'suspense' of not knowing what will happen, kind of listening to games on the radio. With open engine games, most people familiar with the games will know immediately what happens as soon as they see the die or other number generator. Just a thought...

Both approaches are equally enjoyable. I prefer "closed" engines, i,e. PC sims because I like to do what-if leagues whether that means cross-era or even releasing all players in a given year to a draft pool and redrafting to get a random league. In games like OOTP which include everything or games like Action PC Baseball in which you buy seasons, one can easily create scenarios that would be extremely difficult if not impossible.

Exactly - especially crazy stuff like random debut in OOTP. I do wish that you could still do a high school aged OOTP random debut league. Sadly, it seems that the Spritze database doesn't work quite as well as it once did.

I think either is fine. I don't prefer one over the other. In fact, my favorite computer (closed engine) game is OOTP. I LOVE that game even though it's closed engine.

OOTP is actually pretty interesting. Though it is closed engine, if you mess around with it enough you'll get a good idea of what attributes are actually desirable in drafting players. There are a lot of really good strategy guides out there for those who like setting up a managerial career. I'm not certain that I can heartily endorse it as a sim for replays - though I would say that the jury might still be out on that question.

Here’s my question. Do you feel that throwing the dice and pushing a button on the computer are significantly different? After giving it much thought, my answer would be “there’s no difference as long as the computer program is a legitimate random generator”.

I agree with you - there's really no difference. I do like the feel of dice in my hands, though. There are some games where you have to be careful that the engine doesn't "cheat" on you. The Strat PC game is notorious for this, unless you turn some of the extra "realism" feature soff.

I haven't laughed so hard at a KZbin video than when you talked about going on Reddit. Saberfast Baseball is part open source and part close source, because I have exclusive rights to the humongous fielding database that I use for range and arm ratings, but if someone else had this database, they could replicate the game.
