Very proud of you! I remember when I watched your video a few years ago explaining why you'd start a second degree... Seeing you now finishing it makes me very happy and shows me that it's never too late to change your direction in life. Felicidades!

Thanks for the amazing review. You did great despite some lack of previous math skills. You got some amazing mental strength. I am going through the Physics degree in OU and I am a bit battled about the choice between cosmology module or the statistical mechanics module. Not sure which one will be more useful. Overall I am a bit luckier from the math side, coming from economics and finance degree.

This is very useful, as have been your others describing your OU degree course. I am starting in February, studying MST124 and S111. I hope then to continue in October 2022 with modules either for Physics or for Astronomy and Planetary Science (most modules are common to both).

The open uni is perfect for me because I love studying, so I’m living my normal life but gaining a degree at the same time. My advice to anyone thinking of doing it is to be very well prepared. Just because they accept anyone doesn’t mean you won’t need prerequisites. Khan academy and professor Leonards lectures are really good 👍

I also do Q77 and I’m finishing it next year (already enrolled on my last two modules SM381 electromagnetism and M337 complex analysis). TBH I did not quite enjoy the physic modules as much as the math modules. OU math courses are excellent except for the modelling part of MST210. Anyways congrats.

Very useful video. What do you think abbot the new m66 master in astrophysics ? Seems longer but more on topic for someone who has background in science. Questions in science seems a waste of time if you already have that knowledge

Thanks for the great videos on your experiences with this degree! I also want to begin studying this degree soon. As I'll be studying part time, do you recommend taking S111 together with MST124 and/or MST125 (spread over 1.5 years--not all in 1 year)? You mentioned that S111 was quite easy, but perhaps the time commitment from reading, assignments, etc. is still too large to combine with the other modules.
@LuciaMontesEN
@LuciaMontesEN 2 жыл бұрын
If you have some science knowledge already then reading through S111 is easy. If you want to do the degree faster like I did then I recommend doing S111 at the same time as MST124. Also level 1 module grades don’t count to your overall degree, which I forgot to mention

How was the workload with 60 vs 90 credits? Was 90 a lot? Do you feel like you could've gone full time?
@LuciaMontesEN
@LuciaMontesEN Жыл бұрын
I did 90 when the modules were easier so it was manageable, but I wouldn’t have been able to do it for level 3, for example, as the complexity of the module meant assignments took much longer to complete

Is this degree purely theoretical? Or did you have lab based practicals?
@Dractonis
@Dractonis Жыл бұрын
If you want practicals I would recommend something like what I am doing Physics (R51). You do two project modules, one I have just finished called Remote experiments in physics and space (SXPS288). This included remote experiments using optical/radio telescopes to determine the ages/distances of star clusters or the structure of the galaxy working in teams. Then a Compton scattering remote experiment to assess momentum in photons and lastly infra red spectroscopy remote experiments to determine the compositions of mystery atmospheres of planetary bodies. All are done with either a lab partner or as a team and involve writing up technical reports with your results. You do them all remotely using lab interfaces or in the case of the telescopes, by directly controlling the telescope equipment and monitoring their vitals. You can take some pretty pictures with the optical ones! The second one is Science project course (SXP390). "In Science project course: radiation and matter (SXP390), you’ll undertake individual investigations within defined topics, which could include radiation and matter, quantum entanglement, gravitational lensing, exoplanets, astrophysical and jets - there’s also a Physics Education Research (PER) topic. You’ll need access to scientific literature, probably from electronic library sources. The study materials guide planning and conducting project work, searching and using the literature, and writing a report. But ultimately, this is a chance for you to plan and execute a piece of work for yourself."

Physics (R51) is also accredited by the Institute of Physics, if that is important to you :)

@zoeywyllie1411
@zoeywyllie1411 Жыл бұрын
The OU is largely theory but still does remote based experiments e.g. remote controlling telescopes to calibrate and set up and collect results from, among a few other remote control based experiments or tends to be "virtual labs" where it is more like controlling a simulation so you can still learn all of the underlying principles and experiment with stuff, just not physically touch equipment. (The module "remote experiments in physics in space" provides the most practical one sense of actually remote controlling equipment and the module description might help a bit) There are additionally some in person lab schools which run once per year and are optional. I'ved worked in labs for 2 nearly 3 years now as a lab tech and I can usually pick up how to use the physical equivilants with a lot of ease since I've still learnt about what they are and how they are used, mainly just need a quick run through which takes like 2 minutes on setup but I am good from there which isn't really much different from the first time anyone goes into a new lab environment tbh
