I came across a Rapid 32 that had the expansion vessel punctured meaning the vessel was full of water with no air cushion. The system pressure never got over 1.5 bar. The system was in a one bedroom flat with low water content rads in the living room, hall and bedroom. There was a towel rail in the bathroom and Kickspace in the kitchen and weather compensation connected. An anti-cycle time delay of 10 minutes was set. All piping was plastic Hep2O. The guy in the flat was an engineer of some sort so was no fool. I told him of the expansion vessel failing. He said it never gets over 1.6 Bar irrespective. Usually around 1.4 bar. We assumed the plastic pipe must be taking some of the expansion. I told him the price of a new vessel, which was around £90-95, plus fitting, which should be quite quick. He said leave and he will monitor it. Thought that £90-95 for simple expansion vessel was rip off. A year after, he said it still has not gone over 1.6 bar at any time he looked. The high pressure discharge valve has never operated, with the water level staying the same. It is still like that operating normally. I read that too much inhibitor in a system can degrade the rubber in the expansion vessel causing early failure.

Great work with the bulletproof intergas boiler. For large homes with multiple bathrooms and if the owner can afford it, a system boiler with unvented cylinder is of course preferable to a combi. And a system boiler would not need a combimate either I believe.

Having been called to a block with old potterton powermax's with aluminium flues with a thicker wall than that I can honestly say the "life of the boiler" is expected to be no more than 10 years if that's how they're judging it. Very smart install though I hate using press fittings on gas, been to too many jobs where someone has used the wrong fitting on an install because the bucket has tipped over n mixed them etc.
@UrbanPlumbers
@UrbanPlumbers 2 жыл бұрын
I do pay attention with the fittings, but yes - it is easy to use a wrong one. Geberit gas yellow caps that you have to remove before using the fitting, less chance of making a mistake

Fantastic video, I’m no heating engineer but love engineering work being done properly. Hats off to you for being thorough and professional with your work. The worst thing is a cowboy! Do you mind telling me how much (approx) this type of job should cost? I have the exact same setup and was looking at Heatable to change it but not sure if it’s best to get a local company in but don’t want to be ripped off. Thanks
@UrbanPlumbers
@UrbanPlumbers 2 жыл бұрын
I really do not like talking about money on the open forum as it always creates extreme reactions Use a local company for sure. As a rule of thumb, jobs like that should not cost less than 3K and anything more than 5K would be a bit suspicious, but all jobs are different. Sorry for not being able to be more precise with costing.

My heating bill is 500-600€ per month and can’t find someone to give me honest advice as to what should i do to stop high bills. I have ok system boiler with single zone and old copper cylinder. Intergas Rapid is just a huge mothfaka beast - massive heat exchanger not some pussy boiler like logic or worcester ;)
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 2 жыл бұрын
If that is just a one bathroom home the Intergas Rapid 32 should be fine. The Intergas Xtreme has a higher flow rate, being more suitable. Even with a two bathrooms it should cope as rarely are two baths filled simultaneously. If two showers are simultaneously used regularly, fit areated Raindance shower heads as they use less water. Also a balanced hot and cold system helps in mains water systems. Fit wonder valves on all outlets, then insert the correct sized water regulator cartridge. A washing machine, wash basins, etc, do not need firehose flows and pressures. Yet they can affect a shower when turned on if drawing too much water. *Always* change the main stoptap to a _full bore_ tap. I would have fitted a piece of 22mm pipe into the boiler onto the existing 15mm gas pipe, then looked to see if it was OK. Sometimes it is, as the 15mm is only a short length under the solid floor. Then it saves running an external gas pipe.
@UrbanPlumbers
@UrbanPlumbers 2 жыл бұрын
Two bathrooms here. Intergas 32 easily does 2 showers at the same time, you just have to crank the fan up to 5000 rpm and you get 35Kw out of it. 28mm was needed for this install on gas run not 22mm.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 2 жыл бұрын
@@UrbanPlumbers In the past I have fitted a 28mm meter union with a metre or so of 28mm. Then replaced 15mm with 22m where I could. It meant a mixture of 28, 15 and 22mm in various parts of the run. It worked. I have also fitted 35mm near a boiler, that acted as gas storage, because the supply from the street was poor. It stopped ingnition problems. You could still have connected the 15mm pipe to the boiler. then ran a 22mm, not 28mm pipe back to the meter. Then you parrallel up two gas runs. Similar to a ring circuit in electrical installations.
@johnburns4017

@@UrbanPlumbers Yes Intergas set the DHW about 10% below maximum kW available. Few know that you need to wind the fan speed to max to get higher flowrates.

Could you of took the floor boards up in the airing cupboard to connect the 2 flow pipes, just looks better hiding the pipework. Correct me if I'm wrong but is it a hot flush you did, and a power flush is using an external pumped filter? But my biggest gripe is that you "power flushed" with a new boiler on so it's now going to get it ran through it, should of done that the week before with the old boiler on the wall if it worked or use an actual power flush machine.

I appreciate most straight swaps are 1 day max, but the 'bigger' jobs, please :)

@@UrbanPlumbers Thank you for your swift reply. As a 2 man team we have done installs about 8-9 years ago but spent the time between doing breakdowns as a PAYE for a company. Have now decided to go at it on our own about 5 months ago and fill in the gaps of our own work with some sub contracted. 2-3 days is good going as 1 man. We have to do them in 1 day to make our moneys worth for 2 of us, but we easily finish on time unless something unexpected comes up (which we all know it does from time to time). Great work, very enjoyable to see a talented person. Thank you for your videos.
