You don't need this on most locking interior doors. That's why the hall side knob typically has a hole in it. Depending on the latch design you either need a strong enough pin or a small enough flathead screwdriver. You may also have the emergency key laying around somewhere. It looks like a funny piece of metal with one end bent. Many people hide them on top of the door frames. Also, the fact that the card technique worked says that either the latch has no dead latch mechanism or your door hardware is set improperly not engaging the dead latch.

a locksmith quoted $200 to get my door unlocked! used your technique and it worked! the key words for me was "lean into it" which meant to me to give it some real purpose. I was motivated! 3 tools is what I used: credit card, some prayer and a few curse words :-)

I got locked out, I called a locksmith... He opened my front door more or less using this method. He asked me to turn away, but I had a sneaky look. It scares the crap out of me... To think anyone could have got in that easily and quietly. I immediately put in another lock. Currently have had some burglars casing out my house, knocking on my door to see if anyone is in etc, giving a bullshit story when I did open the door... I've realised that my doors are STILL massively vulnerable. Just ordered the things I need to secure the doors. Someone is always in the house until I get it done.

Yeah best to use a deadbolt and reinforce the door jam. Most deadbolts only have to be kicked 1/2" through wood to break in. I ran a steel sheet down the inside to prevent this.

TIPS FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT: - use a hard card like a credit card! A piece of plastic or thick paper is NOT a useful substitute. use a CARD. don't worry, they can bend. - you don't have to start from the top. in my experience, it's more effective if you just put the card in right where the hole would be and just start pushing it in. - have the card straight (not diagonal). - have the card horizontal so you have more area to hold and push. i tried having it vertical at first and my weak hands couldn't push through, but horizontal did it for me. -You may wiggle if it helps. - just KEEP PUSHING. you don't need to turn the knob. focus on pushing the card. - use the least important card you have duh

First off, not sure if you realized, but you basically flashed all your info on your chase card. The indents can still be read from the backside. Also, there are places that sell "shims" that basically work in the same way, and are made out of plastic, or even metal. Therefore, no damage to your cards when it doesn't work right away and you struggle with it for a minute.

My 4 year old just locked himself in his room by accident at 2:30 am and I watched this video and was able to get him out in a matter of just a few minute’s. Thank you so much for helping me out. That could have been a nightmare, Instead it was a quick fix and I learned a new skill that I didn’t know I would need one day. I showed him what he did wrong and now he knows. The good thing is if this ever happens again with my one year old one day then now I know how to fix it quickly. Thanks again!
