No you need to open the box in order to reset the combination. There are various non-invasive ways to do this but it requires knowledge of the door and its mechanics to be effective.

YOU, probably not. But for a locksmith, it would be one of the easier locks to crack so it probably wouldn't cost quite that much. And once it is open, chances are the tumblers are exposed on the back side of the door when it is open so you can see where the notches line up and reverse engineer the combination. I supposed if you wanted o get in badly enough and didn't care about having to replace the glass, you could break the glass and then use a dental mirror and flashlight to see the tumblers. Replacing the glass might be cheaper than a locksmith. (Full disclosure...I can't say for SURE that the tumblers are exposed on the backside of the door. But the ones I had in college that were like this were.) Of course, there is always the brute force method. I think there are 20 positions on each dial. So that would be 8000 combinations. However, like all non-high security combination locks, once you get the first two, you can just move around the dial to each position for the third number, trying to open it at each position. So you really only have to brute force the first two. That makes it only 400 combinations, which may not be fun, but is doable in a few hours or even a few days if you just want to try it a little at a time. IT is just that each of your 400 combinations will take you a little longer since you have to try 20 positions before you can dismiss it as not correct.

Difficult but not impossible. They are all turning dials on the back but what you want to look and concentrate on is the latch. If you can get to it from the coin opening is very easy to overcome. There is even a pin sticking out on the latch bar n most of them that makes it easier to slide the latch over. I would need to see a pic of the box/door to tell you how. Doors vary but with everyone of them the latch is its weak point.
