I can remember going to Knotts Berry Farm in the early 80’s and I picked out a geode and when they opened it the cavity inside had the most beautiful purple crystals

Those are amethyst crystals! There's many different colors including almost black called smokey crystals it's interesting because depending where their from the elements can drastically change the colors!

@@bs-vo1ii Knott's Berry Farm was great place to go spend the day & was different from Dis'land & the like! Knott's was fun of a unique type when I was growing up in L.A. in the 60's! Loved that place so much! And yes, the thing of picking your own rock & they'd break it open for you & you got to take it home... 8 am pretty sure that's what got me into my lifelong love of rocks...all kinds of rocks! To this day, I take walks on a beach, river, anywhere, & I come back with "rocks in pockets"! Friends jokingly say that's my Indian name...😀 I'm cool with that. Couple friends have been kind enuff to polish 'em for me in tumbler in past, but now I am finally getting my own rock tumbler! So excited! Am sure to come home from OR Coast with many "rocks in pockets"...& Tote bags...car doors... + any other nooks & crannies! At age 63, am finally coming home with my own tumbler to polish my rocks & am so excited!

I grew up in L.A., going to Busch Gardens & Knotts Berry Farm as a kid growing up in 1960's-70's. Disneyland was reserved for multiple "A's" on year-end report cards. 😁 I remember going to Magic Mountain 1st day it opened (a preview?), but it was so disappointing (as a kid) cuz' most of rides weren't even there yet. I remember a ride up to top of a 'space needle', to look 360° around...BORING! To me, it was like taking elevator with a view, to top of (what?) to "see for miles" (who cares?). Adults liked it, I was bored stiff. Maybe if they'd had a slide to get back down, would be scary/cool?! Magic Mtn had another 'opening day' after some rides & fun stuff were open. It was better ~ introduced the idea of 1 Entry Ticket that let you ride everything, much as you want, all day long! Disney had ticket book back then, with 1-5 stars/levels of rides & tickets. Had to buy supplement tickets to ride on more 5🌟 rides...the best & biggest rides had just 1 ticket per book. I grew up thinking EVERY city had a Disneyland, Harlem Globetrotters & a Universal Studios. My parents liked Busch Gardens tours (tram) best cuz' grown-ups got sm cups of beer for free at end of tour. I liked panning for gold at Knott's - best thing - & bringing home jelly made the fun last, as long as jelly did. Years later I learned that my little bottles of "gold" in water from each trip were just "fools gold" ~ did not matter to me 1 bit!! Great place to be a kid back then -- many places to go, different things to do! I have only been back as adult to Disney & Universal (my Dad was SFX Editor there). I imagine the "flavor" of places like Knott's Berry Farm & Busch Gardens have turned into "just another big Amusement Park", so I'd rather keep them as in my memories. Wow! That was fun ride down memory lane! Thanks for my smiles 2day! 60's & 70's (not 80's😉) were 👍😄👍!!!

I love geodes!!!! They are always a surprise. My local gem and mineral show always has a table that lets you pick out what size and type of geode you’d like and they cut them open. I have a lot.

Geodes remind me of how amazing our planet and universe is, and just how much beauty and wonder it stores in places we least expect… we live our lives walking on top of an entire planet we do not see… there are caverns the size of skyscrapers under our feet filled with crystals, oceans of water, and all sorts of wonders… it’s a truly amazing experience to explore.

I have a big geode, and the inside is an awesome display of crystal. I was told this one was cut smoothly with a diamond saw. It has a rough outside crust that goes inward several millimeters but the inside is a beautiful quartz-looking mass.

We go to a mine a few hours from where we live and have found some geodes. They crack them open for you. The first time we did this I became aware of the release of ancient energy in these beautiful objects. So the next time we got geodes we decided to crack them at home in our meditation room so all that ancient energy would be dispelled in our meditation room. We have hundreds of geodes and gemstones in that room now and we so love them all.

I actually went to dugway quite a few years ago. Spent the whole day digging for geodes. It was very exciting and did find some very nice specimens not huge but very pretty! Liked this video

When you mine, how do you know when you hit a geode? Especially a big one like they were showing at the trade show?

You kind of just know when you see one. If you've ever seen a few un cracked specimens you sortt just have a look too them. They're sort of just rounded unnaturally. Like a river rock might be round but they're usually evenly rounded or oblong but these are round like I imagine an air bubble that got stuck in lava would form. Or imagine if you took the moon and instead of having craters they were the opposite. Like big bubbles in mud about to pop but then got stuck and never popped. Once you've held a few you'll just know when you see one. Next time you see a nice Geode just don't admire the inside. Turn it around and inspect the back of it. It'll help you be able to see what they look liike.

imagine you have a smooth black wall ok? now medium-gray colored rock cut it perfectly in half and stick the smooth side against the wall now you see this rough gray blob in your otherwise perfect wall of black... it looks out of place against all that black right? that's how they find these when mining too the outer shell looks different in color and texture from the rock and other sediments it's surrounded by plus as you chip away at the sediments they actually separate from the geode itself in some cases.

The only way to have an idea of whether you have a geode or thunder egg is weight but you dont truly know until you cut/break them open.

with the saw setup you have going for the thunder eggs we used to use a weighted tin attached to the part you push and it pulls the stone through the blade without the need of your hand being in there. way safer to use that way.

Never heard of thunder eggs. Definitely Mother nature at her best. Was fun watching how you actually get the geode cracked. Loved the striped Chalcedony. Using the saw looked mighty dangerous, good thing you guys are professionals.

The only real danger from using the saw is if the blade broke, i have never had a blade break on me in the many years i have been cutting. These blades are dull, they use the diamond layer to scrape away the material, they are not like a normal saw blade. The geode cracker however is way too messy and far more dangerous than the saw which is why i dont use one.

Man. I don't know why but I always seem to get the craziest Geodes. Living in Utah we have them available but for some reason I always seem to aim for the Geodes that I expect to make like a nice piece to display and they end up being crap inside and then I'll find these really ugly geodes that are lopsided and they'll end up with beautiful caverns inside with really even druzy or Chalcedony. I got one the other day I had trouble cutting open because of the size but it was like half thunderegg half geode but inside there was this really strange crystal inside that terminated into I can only explain as like melting citrine icicles. It was almost like a stalagmite formation but the very end looks just like a crystal clear drop of water about to drip. It looks just like water about to fall but it's a solid crystal. Really odd. I had no idea that they glowed under black light either. You just caused me to have to pull out all my geodes now to check for glowers. Thanks. Lol. Awesome video. What did you do to make that geode crack setup?

I think I found a geode! But it's not like that in the video. It's pure white geode crystal and about the size of my palm! It has no hollow spaces, it's solid and the tiny crystals are so reflective!

How do rattlers happen? Is it like a geode Falls down a slope because of erosion and the crystals inside shatter? also a few years ago I was at a crystal shop in Peoria Illinois, there was an amethyst geode so large I could sit inside of it.

Hi! I lve in northern Virginia, and my Grand daughter, 12 would like to get into rock collecting and making art with them. I was wondering a few things- What is the difference between a geode and a Thunder egg? Can we find geodes here in NoVa? When you were cracking the geodes, there was a lot of dust and fine particulate in the air- I am glad you are wearing glasses, but shouldn't you also wear a mask to prevent breathing it in, as you had the water to protect you with the saw? I would hate for you to develop silicosis some day Thank you!

Thundereggs are similar to a filled geode, that is formed within rhyolitic volcanic ash layers and opposed to geodes have agate-filled nodules, that is minerals in-filled during its formation cooling to create a microcrystalline structure. Geode is a geological secondary formation within sedimentary and volcanic rocks including common crystals include quartz, agate, jasper, gypsum, chalcedony, hematite, dolomite and calcite. - Differences of Quartz Varieties I believe the location, size, crystal habit/structure (crystallography) and possibly its luster. For more nuanced differences you may have to look towards reflectance, absorption, cleavage which can be looked up on mindat or IGS. Chemical formulas: Quartz is a family of minerals with this composition: Silicon 46.74 % Oxygen 53.26 % and it's varieties: Agate - banded variety of chaledony Carnelian - flesh red chalcedony Chalcedony - microcrystalline quartz Chert - cryptocrystalline quartz Flint - microcrystalline quartz Chelcedony SiO 2 cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite (considered a polymorph of quartz; Silicon 46.74% SiO 2 Oxygen 53.26 %) Extra: Apophylite vs Quartz (m.kzbin.infoKBKhMWAc8B4 )

I think you could wrap a bit of rope or a heavy rubber band around the geode after putting it in the chain just to keep the pieces from flying off and possibly smashing onto the floor. Or just do it on the ground.

Have you considered using sound/vibrations to cut into rocks? I seen someone take a copper tube, and vibrated the rock, making the tube, with some weight on it, sink into the rock all the way. made a nice round and smooth hole. with little effort.

Hi you need a new blade for your saw it shouldn't take an hour to cut. A stone like that should be no longer than 30seconds max. Not sure if you have Makita where you are if you do buy a Makita Continuous diamond turbo blade. Stay away from the segmented blades as the can bite. Lastly the electroplated diamond blade you using is for marble only and alot of your stone will be as hard as granite and will wreck your blade fast. Also I would love to polish up one of those pieces. Regards
