I struggle with binge eating and I found her vid very comforting seeing someone with a following being open and talking about her struggles around food. People with a binge eating disorder understand what she is talking about when she says eat when you are satisfied and not overly full. Binge eating is when you feel overly full to the point of sick, and in a way abuse food because for example "Ice cream" May not be a fun dessert but rather a trigger and an a addiction. So her saying 1 treat meal a week is a healing process because she got to relearn how to love a treat rather then just quickly eating it with shame. If you don't struggle with BED don't comment on her ways to recover. I think she did a wonderful job.

I wasn't trying to find faults in this video, but I did find 2 horrible "tips" that Summer mentioned. First, you SHOULD be able to eat more than 1 "treat" per week. At 6:30 she talked about going a whole week, then letting yourself eat a treat at the end of the week. HORRIBLE ADVICE. I eat dessert every single night of my life, and I am very healthy and fit. It's all about finding balance. Second, she mentioned "try to avoid snacking." Girl, have you ever heard of hummus & veggies, greek yogurt & berries, rice crackers & avocado, etc. I'm sorry, but telling her followers to avoid snacking is essentially the same as "restrict your daily caloric intake", which is horrible advice.

I think there are a lot of mixed messages in this video. This is not necessarily recovery oriented. As a person in recovery, I think it's really important to not categorize foods as "good" or "bad." It can be very punishing in nature. While I don't think Summer meant to cause harm, mentioning numbers can make it seem like eating disorders are only valid if you lose or gain "x" amount of weight. Mentioning discipline in here isn't necessary. Recovery is not about discipline, it's about giving yourself unconditional permission to eat when you're hungry! There's no shame in having a treat every day. There's no shame in cellulite, it doesn't mean you're unhealthy. I've dealt with anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Recovery from all of them has looked the same. It's not about working out obsessively to make sure one does not gain weight that isn't muscle weight. I think mentioning how not to gain weight in an eating disorder "recovery" video isn't great. Recovery is about acceptance, even if that means gaining weight. Trying to avoid where your body naturally wants to be (and weigh) is a form of restricting your intake! Don't take this video to heart if you're new to recovery! There are a ton of great recovery KZbinrs. Check out "What Mia Did Next"

I’m currently recovering from 14 years of anorexia, and everything you’re telling is the exáct opposite of what I am learning and doing atm. I want my body to decide what it needs and at which weight it belongs (or it “wants” to be). Your health is the most important thing, and therefore, I am absolute not an advocate of “avoiding snacks” or “eating clean”. No, give yourself permission to fuel your body (and soul or brain or anything) with whatever it needs. And thén things will balance out themselves. Becoming skinny should never be a goal or starting point to recover: your health should be. And with that I mean: a healthy relationship with food, without any restrictions, but just balanced and “free”.

@mariacarolinaribeiro10893 жыл бұрын
I actually have a different view on body positive affirmations that made a huge impact on me, one time Demi Lovato said that it should be more about body acceptance rather than body positivity because accepting your body with its flaws is way more important than just lying to yourself because it's also normal to not feel so good about your body sometimes and what you need is to feel comfortable with it, not lie to yourself because that also puts a negative connotation on the things you point as "flaws". So try to change and instead of standing in front of the mirror saying "you're so beautiful, I love you" without believing it, aknowledge the truth about how you feel and accept it like "I have cellulite and it's okay because it's a part of the body that gives me life so I see you, you're healthy and I accept you"
@mariacarolinaribeiro10893 жыл бұрын
I actually have a different view on a lot of things you said, because it seems like you in a way substituted binge eating with working out which can be really dangerous because it underlines that you might still have an unhealthy relationship with food and the only way you can feel better and control it is by working out 3 times a week. But this can just be me projecting and being way too cautious because of the ED situations I know closely and obviously everyone's recovery can be so different, I just hope you know that: 1. You shouldn't workout in order to look a certain way 2. You don't have to only treat yourself after following "a plan" throughout the week, like you said restriction is the worst and I think you should be able to not workout if you don't feel like it and still feel good and treat yourself throghout the week whenever you want as long as you're healthy 3. You can and should feel good about your body natural changes and natural weight flactuations without having to look "toned" or a certain way. But that's all, I just want you andhope you can find peace in your body without having to follow those "rules" in a way, but of course recovery isn't linear and you obviously can still be figuring it out while sharing your journey with the world so I'm just making these observations to help you and because I want you to be well, not to come for you at all, that's the worst thing anyone can do because we're all figuring it out too and you sharing this is already a lot and I salute you for that Summer!

Also to everyone in the comments who might disagree with some things Summer shared, just like me, instead of attacking her and saying "this is not it, this is a bad message" in an aggressive way maybe just have a little bit of compassion and empathy and understand that she might still be going through it and sharing her current experience with the world doesn't mean she's an expert or has it figured out. Share your concerns and tips in a polite loving way, there's nothing worse than attacking people sharing their personal struggles, recovery experiences or over their triggers, even if you don't agree with their approach, your own recovery experience and look on things can change once more educated, remember that they might be struggling and figuring it out and that doesn't mean that they're "hypocrites", purposefully sharing a bad message or that they don't know that people don't cater to their triggers, recovery isn't linear, be compassionate and understanding.

Another thing people aren’t realizing is that flipping from a binge eating disorder into more restrictive mindsets (and the other way around) is very common. I’ve known many people with BED who essentially ‘replaced’ it with anorexia, and vice versa. Even if she’s recovered from BED, she could still be struggling.
@mariacarolinaribeiro10893 жыл бұрын
@@nuclearclarity3778 Exactly! People automatically assume that when someone talks about these types of issues and recovery that they're "fixed" and know all about it but the truth is that just because someone decides to share what they have gone through whether it's because it's cathartic for them, or in order to help others, whatever it is, it doesn't mean that they're no longer struggling or figuring it out at all, especially since recovery is not linear. I've noticed that so much that when a public figure goes through something, relapses or goes into a few spirals, people call them hypocrites or liars, or say that "they always do the same thing" but that's what recovering from these issues is like to majority of people. Ofc this isn't necessarily that situation but some of these comments and reactions truly reflect that mindset, people talk about mental health more but they're far from comprehending mental illnesses or having empathy and understanding towards a lot of what it brings and means.

But, the reality is that every food fuels us and provides us with something we need. Too much of any food, even the "good foods" can harm our bodies in some way. I see many MANY comments about anorexia & how "no snacking" and "only one treat per week" is not recovery oriented & can be triggering. First: I think if you're actively in recovery you might want to avoid videos talking about EDs - lots of stuff can be triggering in those so just something to keep in mind. Two: there are a lot of well intended tips about "listening to your body", "eating when hungry" and "snacks are healthy and not having them is not recovery" - HOWEVER - things are extremely different in binge eating disorders (BED). If you "listen to your body" and "eat when you're hungry" that's literally ALL the time when struggling with BED. Snacking can also send you into a spiral no matter how healthy it is. And treats are especially dangerous if they're triggering. In BED you have no self control. So having a dessert every day might unfold getting seconds, thirds, fourths. As beneficial as that might be if you wanna gain weight, it can be problematic when having BED. Caloric overload is as dangerous as depraving yourself of calories. It causes massive health problems, including mental ones. It's wise for people in recover from BED to develop mindful eating - meaning you firstly fix your relationship with food. And if taking away snacking makes you appreciate the meals a lot more and you're able to focus on what you're eating, then that's beneficial as a start. Food addiction just one of the different EDs so her "missing the mark" applies only to several types of ED. yes, anorexia is being a lot more prevalent in public discussions but do keep in mind there are also other types with different triggers. I think people who suffered from BED will find this video extremely useful.

for me, it will never happen again because whenever i see these foods my brain remind me of my past and i will automaticly triggered to it. it’s kinda trauma 😁
@Aylee4n3 жыл бұрын
She never explained it. Its like if u start working out 5× a week u will recover from BED and lose weight when BE is much more than that. I was in a cycle of restricting and binging and how i overcame it was by eating enough and not obsessing over calories. I also had a habit of eating only at night bcs i was always skipping breakfast and lunch so i binged/overate almost every night bcs i was just too hungry. So never skip a meal and try to add more protein in them so it will help u feel fuller. Also dont forget to drink water. And also when u get the urge to binge get a low calorie drink that u can grab whenever u want. I personally like lipton ice tea or coca cola zero, i know these r not the healthiest but they help. Another thing is stop weighing urself. Throw the scale. It does no help

I think what she is saying is moving her body and exercising helped her create good habits to help her with binge eating. Its not necessarily about the exercising then it is to create healthy habits and a healthy mindset to help overcome the negative thoughts that come with binge eating. I know as a binge eater myself, moving my body deters my body from going in spiral mode.
@anadusao3 жыл бұрын
@@christineesparza5417 what bothered in her video was her saying she became obsessed with exercising and how she was recommending to exercise 5 times a week, it's really unhealthy in my opinion, especially because when you don't exercise at all you're not used to it & it can take months before getting better at it. so recommending over exercising to people with already obsessive habits (binge eating) does not seem like a good idea. and some people with ed over exercise and it makes it even worse. at one point I do think, yes, starting to exercise from time to time is a good idea but maybe not that drastically.

Finally know I am really not alone with BED. Especially seeing that you have been through this journey is just so comforting. I don’t want to say too much because when so many people are watching your videos and have so many opinions, it’s important that things that you say are really thought through, but what I want to say is that I hope BED will be talked about more because since I’ve been 7 years old I’ve struggled with eating disorders and since 16 years old I’ve been suffering BED, still am. This gave me a lot of strength to believe that I can overcome this. I see where you were heading with this and I think you shouldn’t be scared to talk about your own opinions and experience online. Of course different things need to be taken into account, with such a huge audience. But I almost never comment on social media platforms so this really was a big deal that you did put this video here and please do talk about this more. ❤️

YOU SHOULD NOT USE FOOD AS A REWARD! Using food as a reward/looking forward to one "treat" a week IS restricting. Staying away from foods and labelling foods as healthy and unhealthy is restrictive. I really feel for you and can see that you are trying to help and respond to something your audience has been requesting, but this is a sensitive topic that you are unintentionally giving harmful/triggering advice about.

im so tired of the people in the comments who think eating only healthy food is an eating disorder. ITS NOT. there are so many delicious recipes out there that are actually healthy and nutritional. healthy food doesnt have to be gross and unsatisfying. if you are creative you can create many yummy recipes with foods that are healthy. junk food is meant to be a treat. its not something that you’re supposed to have everyday because it wont fuel you and give you the right nutrients to grow and be healthy and strong. summer saying she has a treat at the end of the week makes a lot of sense. its a reward for a friday or saturday night when you settle down on the couch and watch a movie. also BED is VERY different to restrictive EDS like anorexia. The recovery is entirely different. obviously if you haven’t struggled with BED then this video is NOT FOR YOU.
@rea97993 жыл бұрын
this is such an unhealthy and harmful message for your followers! you say that you've gotten addicted to exercise instead of eating..... thats substituting one problem for another. you are compensating for ur food by working out and now encouraging others to do that. Also, not everyone loses weight after recovering from an ed. the voice u r encouraging others to listen to telling them to stop eating is often still their ed because they think theyve fully recovered when they r still in quasi recovery. telling ur followers and people who look up to u to stop eating "junk" food and labelling them as "treats" is a clear indicator that u still have a lot of fatphobia and judgement to still unpack. It wud also be helpful to acknowledge that u have a lot of privilege as an able bodied white woman in this society in terms of desirable beauty standards. mentioning burning calories and toning ur body shows that u r still focused on your body and suppressing your weight and unfortunately encouraging and praising these behaviours. its hilarious when you say that ur not on a diet because ur still clearly restricting. super disappointing !

thank you so much for pointing that out and raising awareness about this. i also find the title smh inappropriate
@lauraemilia56483 жыл бұрын
I definitely get what you're saying, but that whole thing about calling food "junk" or "treats" isn't necessarily about what kind of food it is but instead about how you feel about it. I've personally struggled with binging and at least with my experience, I'd definitely call that unhealthy food junk because I didn't even want it. It was bad for me and provided little to no satisfaction, but I still HAD to eat it. I'm much better now, and now I would call that same food treats, because I have it out of enjoyment and it actually makes me feel good even though the food itself is still unhealthy. I do still think that this video could've been bettered by keeping it as just her sharing her experience instead of giving advice, but her struggles shouldn't be invalidated.
@lyla70973 жыл бұрын
I understand what you’re trying to say, but you should also try and realize that said person who is still trying to overcome their eating disorder is not going to be perfect. It’s an every day up hill battle to try and overcome the negative thought patterns but I believe she’s come a long way and it’s her struggle to open up about. Instead of looking for every possible mis step, try and be proud of the growth that can be seen! :)
@rea97993 жыл бұрын
@@lyla7097 as someone who is also recovering frm an ED i think its extremely necessary to be so so careful about the kind of dialogue u use around food and your own body. Even lightly promoting restriction can ultimately prove to be detrimental because people, esp her young followers, may take it to extremes. I think its important to educate oneself over what actual recovery really looks like and making regular and consistent efforts to achieve it before making advice videos for young and impressionable audiences particularly on such a large platform

she's opened up to her large audience about her eating problems and serious mental illness and this is how you all respond? She may not have phrased everything perfectly but that's no need to fill her comments with negative stuff criticising her for everything. People need to learn to stop being so agitated at everything and constantly trying to find a problem with what she said. It was brave of her to post this and all she gets is negative feedback? No wonder so many influencers don't like to talk about mental illness.

Stop trying to make it about you, your advice for anorexia is likewise super harmful for binge eating. You weren't really listening if you didn't understand she wasn't talking about anorexia..
