Thanks for the video! I was hoping to find out more about how to determine which options I should choose. You just used the defaults everywhere. Maybe something for another video perhaps.

I do plan to pick up and go a little deeper, but that might not happen until OMV 7 is released. OMV7 just went to RC1 yesterday (1/15/24). If you've got a particular use case, please let me know. You could also look at my older OMV series which went deeper into users and permissions and such.

@@Practical-IT sounds good! Nothing in particular, just wanted to know a bit more about all the different settings, what they mean and when to use which. I'll have a look at your previous video's that sounds like the things I'm looking for.

Really Great..... was battling with this until I found your video...... one question if I may. How to I get my open media vault accessible over different networks, I would love to be able to give my kids access who live on another continent... maybe this calls for another video ......

I'm glad you found it useful. I was just getting started on the OMV 6.9 series when OMV 7 was released. As far as making OMV accessible over different networks, there are several ways to do it, they just aren't neatly integrated into OMV at this point in time. You could install ZeroTier, NetBird, Twingate or Tailscale from the command line and have your kids access through a shared network with one of those systems. You could setup Wireguard or OpenVPN if your firewall/router has provisions for those services. As a last resort you could open ports on your router to allow them access. These options are just off the top of my head. Certainly there are others. In 2024, it really is not advisable to open ports directly on your router/firewall. For testing, sure. For long-term use, no. I do wish the developers would add an easy plugin for OMV that would allow some of the overlay network options (ZeroTier, Tailscale, etc). I hope this gives you some ideas of what you could do, and that one of these options might work for you. There may very well be future videos that go into some of the options available. If you're asking, there are probably others out there with the same type of question. UPDATE: omv-extras does exist for OMV, but it's not available in the default install. They do have a Wireguard plugin that would likely do what you need. I will have to experiment with this a little before doing a video on it.

Thanks for your video. Just a question, would there be an advantage to choose SMB3 instead of SMB2 ? It looks to work fine with SMB2.
@Practical-IT9 ай бұрын
Security and speed are both improved in SMB 3.x

Hi guest, How can access via browser? I tried using another "user name", but not appear menu/folder share, only can change password😢
@Practical-IT4 ай бұрын
What exactly are you trying to access via the browser with a different username? The admin panel, files, something else? You would be well served to consult the OMV documentation. docs.openmediavault.org/en/stable/index.html If you can give some additional detail about what you're trying to do, I might be able to steer you in the right direction. The only thing I access from the web browser is the administration interface. To access files I use the file manager on whatever OS I happen to be running.

Any guide or suggestions on nested share drive. Ie. Parentfolder/folderA. Parentfolder/folderB, Parentfolder/folderC.
@Practical-ITАй бұрын
I do not have a video at this point in time. That being said, the process is not as intuitive as it could be. Create Parentfolder from OMV From a computer connected to OMV create those sub-folders Return to OMV and create the nested shares. It's fiddly, but it can be accomplished. Figuring out the permission layers is another chanllenge for this scenario where you have to use a combination of ACLs and base permissions. I might do a video on this, or at least talk about it in an upcoming live stream, probably the Sunday stream on 10/27.

I tried to setup user yesterday but when I opened shared folder it still prompted for password to the server. Your username and password for user setup is it just normal pc credentials or does it have to be under any workgroup like in small offices?
@Practical-IT4 ай бұрын
You still need to authenticate the share on the NAS when you connect to it. One way around this is to use a login script that will connect to the shared folder every time you login to Windows. Unless this share is read-only, I do not recommend it. The problem is that if you get ransomware and your files get encrypted, it has the potential to encrypt files on the NAS as well. Alternatively, you could write a batch or powershell script to connect to the share and a second to disconnect from the share so that you can avoid the issue. Your mileage may vary, of course.

You can make windows server and share network drives. So why using NAS OS Like OMV when windows based nas server can do it all?
@Practical-IT3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, but I do not share your opinion about Windows Server. OMV is much more flexible for what I want to do with a NAS, and requires less overhead. It also doesn't phone home to Microsoft.

This is great for a total beginner like me, I could figure half of the stuff myself but it never crossed my mind that I need to create the file system like this. My caveman brain was like "put the ssd in your pc and format it manualy, ooga booga."
@Practical-IT4 ай бұрын
Great to hear! There are absolutely parts of OMV which are less than intuitive. Having started with a pre-1.0 version of FreeNAS back in the day, nothing really phases me anymore.

@@Practical-IT Since I don't know much about networking and servers in general, I would like to know why for example we chose BTRFS as the filesystem and not EXT4 or something, what is the most reliable and offers the most usable storage, or what makes more sense with NVMEs rather than HDDs. I made my first home server, thankfully omv was pre installed but I want to make use of it as best as I can, without being a networking or linux wizard. Your videos have been the most clear and helpful so far.
@Practical-IT4 ай бұрын
The short answer: EXT4 is an older filesystem, that is more "traditional" in design and doesn't have a lot of "new" features. It is considered a "journaling" filesystem. BTRFS is a newer filesystem that works on the copy-on-write (COW) design. BTRFS has features to minimize the risk of data corruption. BTRFS also has some deduplication capabilities built in. Why did I select BTRFS in the video over EXT4? Well, the simple reason is to do longer-term testing of BTRFS. Another factor that played into my decision is that Synology (NAS manufacturer) is using BTRFS as standard on their devices. If it's ready for them to rollout, I feel pretty confident using it. If you'd like to see a more in-depth comparison of EXT4 and BTRFS, I would suggest taking a look at this link: www.geeksforgeeks.org/difference-between-ext4-vs-btrfs-filesystems-in-linux/ I hope this makes things a little more clear.

can't upload files from ios to shared folder
@Practical-ITКүн бұрын
iOS is not part of my use case as I don't own any iOS devices. There's probably an app in the app store that would let you do it Also, have you tried anything besides SMB? Have you tried NFS or AFP? If you rule all that out, check the OMV forums or Reddit for somewhere like that.
