This is a really cool concept. I too will be checking this out on one of my gaming PCs.

This was super useful thanks for the work, Microphone is turned up way too high and compressed with possible noise gate settings being set wrong ? Causing your breathing to become massively distracting

I'm running the installation now and it says X-windows. How can I remove that and only use Wayland?

Tried to install Aeon/MicroOS Desktop, YaST couldn’t see my SSD. Tried to install Tumbleweed YaST couldn’t see my SSD. Tried though live ISO, I could see my SSD via terminal and gParted, but could not mount it and YaST couldn’t see it. Tried to install Leap, finally YaST could install Leap. Installer Aeon on my older desktop, that worked. Any ideas about installing in an NVME drive?

I just watched this vid, I downloaded it and booted it into a VM, first thing it is asking me is to select Keyboard layout. Does UK = Ukrainian like it does in language packs, or does it mean United Kingdom? If you want it to be "the best desktop experience" you have to take things like these very first impressions, and make them hospitable. There shouldn't be the question of "am I selecting the correct layout".

Why not use systemd boot?

They are now. But in doing so you are immediately saying no to old computers. Lots of people run on old hardware.

Interesting concepts, and I've been watching ALP since it was announced. However, given that MicroOS only supports Gnome presently says something. Add in the presenter's laugh/scoff about KDE (@13:14) says way, Way more. The engineers and developers behind MicroOS are entitled to their opinions. It happens to not be one I share, and I'll actively be skipping it in my development activities.

You know, I've got a lot of respect for this as a concept, but it also kind of rubs me the wrong way. I like Linux in part because it's so customizable -- and the way this is presented comes across pretty condescending or even hostile to power users from my perspective. My immediate reaction to this talk was very defensive: "Sounds like you think you know what's best for me, so you figure you don't have to ask." And since that is the attitude taken by Apple and Microsoft in their operating systems, I want to recoil from this concept because it wants to take away my control over my system in the same way those others do. That said, I figure this is the right choice for some kinds of users and applications though, and I'm intrigued to see whether it pans out.

I've given ChromeOS a go, not my cup of tea nor do I like the Gnome desktop. They're trying to appeal to masses I understand, heck I gave my little nephew a gnome desktop because it related to his playstation.

The best OS is what works for you, not what s/o else says is the best. Why the base system is GNOME, is beyond my comprehension. If you want it to be “Micro” use a lightweight DE to begin with. The entire Flatpak, AppImage, Snap thing is trying to patch an issue instead of solving it. It might have it’s place for certain applications. Every app bringing it’s own dependencies is another contradiction to “Micro”. Going by your shared desktop screenshot why would I want to have a macOS look and feel? I imagine this being ppl who never used macOS over several years and think it looks nice - yeah, that’s about it. I’m just moving away from it for several reasons. My verdict from this presentation: A more fitting title for me would be “ Why you should NOT be running the MicroOS Desktop - except for the transactional updates”

GNOME is relatively lightweight. It is also very feature rich and has a modern look. When taking in all factors then GNOME is an excellent DE for 2023. Choosing a different DE because it uses a few hundred MB RAM less, while also limiting functionality, UI, user experience and looks is not a worthy tradeoff for the general masses. GNOME is fine.

the point of using flatpaks, appimages, snaps, or even podman containers through distrobox is to avoid dependency hell, and keep your host sane and stable.

GNOME is a steaming pile of crap. So bad that Slackware threw it out back in 2006. Why OpenSUSE would now shift its focus on GNOME instead of KDE is beyond my comprehension.
