George Macdonald's justice really hit home the idea that "justice and mercy have met and kissed" it shows that they where both sides of the same coin and proper godly justice and mercy are not contradictory, but unified, it parallels Adam and Eve "and the two shall be one flesh" because they where both one flesh to begin with, they both have a common origin in the love of God. Just as both Adam and Eve are in the image of God. In the fallen state of the world mercy and justice may conflict just as man and woman may conflict but that is not their original, true, God established state, all justice is merciful else it isn't just, all mercy is just else it isn't merciful.
