Your hunch is right about the flute sounds! A lot of the flute-like sounds here are made by Mongolian singing techniques. It's also cool that you said it sounded almost primal because a lot of foreigners hear Mongolian stuff used in Chinese music and assume it means "exotic" or "foreign". In China, it's not considered foreign at all and is pretty integrated into mainstream music. Instead, the matouqin (used a lot in Genshin) is commonly used to evoke a sense of a "longing for one's home" and Mongolian throat singing is used to evoke an almost-primal "return to roots" feel. As for some cultural contest: In Chinese, Hua is used to refer to Chinese civilization and one theory is that the term originally referred to people of Huaxu, who is said to be the mother of Nvwa and Fuxi aka the founders of human society (and Honkai characters). This is the same Hua used in Fu Hua's name (main character in the Rubia PV for Honkai ). And without giving away too much, Huaxu's purpose in PGR actually has striking parallels with that of the Fu Hua- Nvwa-Fuxi trio in Honkai.

So this is really interesting! HUAXU is actually the character in the thumbnail and what's so interesting is that the faction they belong to is heavily based off Imperial Chinese dynasties and culture. They're entire systems are based off the 9 dragon sons and overall is meant to evocative of a divine mandate in a post apocalyptic world. Really good analysis though!

"Sitting at the computer hacking a system or something". Yes "She" actually did it in the story. Huaxu is an AI developed by Villier, brother of Qu - Empress of Kowloong/China. In chapter 13, Luna - the leader of Ascendant (the first antagonist group in the story), used Huaxu hacking into Gestalt, try to bring Babylonia down the ground.

I always get excited to see PGR in the thumbnail. The OST is top tier, which physical copies exist (this songs on it as well). Edit: Wuthering Waves should be out kind of soonish, and their weapons/abilities come from musical instruments. I imagine the whole game will be very musically driven, especially the OST.

If I had a nickel for every time you understand a character and at least a good chunk of their story by just analysing their song, I'd be rich. As usual, for PGR songs I'll recommend Exorcism, one of my favourite songs in the OST by far, and the most underrated one in my opinion. As for songs from other games, I have recently discovered the amazing soundtrack of Library of Ruina, and I'd recommend from this game The Reverberation Ensemble, the Binah theme, and finally the game's openning, String Theocracy.

re: the point at 5:15 regarding the flute-like sound starting at 4:20 - check out some examples of 'sygyt' on KZbin! It is a style of Tuvan throat singing. The lower pitched tone that comes in together with it at 4:20 is another style, 'kargyraa' if I got the terms right? If throat singing in game OSTs is your jam, I also recommend the OST of The Pathless by Austin Wintory (of Journey fame) Thanks for the great vid as always!

well, here is two "Hua xu" first, this ost' s name is 华墟, this 墟means ruins the character's name is 华胥, 胥 could means moment or observe, both of them are from traditional Chinese both 华墟 and 华胥 pronounce as "Hua Xu" and that girl with black hair you mentioned is not 华胥

I mentioned it in superchat on your stream but you should really check out the two themes for Hisako from Killer Instinct ("Village of whispers" and "Shin Hisako") they are perfect for the spooky season and are also done by two different composers. The two songs represent the character two different stages of their "life" . The first track is produced by the legendary Mick Gordon of doom fame and the second by the multi-instrumentalist and multi-label Legend Celldweller. It's interesting to hear the same character's theme done by two different composers and I'm really curious as to what you would think of them. If you enjoy the Doom soundtrack and inezuma from genshin Impact I guarantee you will love both of these themes and I hope it will get you into doing more Killer Instinct tracks

It took me like 5 times to even come down here to comment becauss the sort of raw primal power this track exudes judt make you want to MOVE. Its a martial arts contest. One of the asteitcs path of like a Tibetan monk. When the song actually gets going its like watching two grand Master martial artists judt going AT each other in their monastery this level of... raw unbridled power. Juxtaposed with this tight restrained and yet elegant movement. For once you got a song that I'm in the dark about its context with as well lol
