I agree. But her version is more similar to SJ Hawkins' studio version. Probably because she heard the record. But her arrangement does him justice and, with her interpretation, is a masterpiece by a 9-year-old. What impressed me the most was her body language, how she kept an eye on everything and her body tension. Just towards the end when she unconsciously tiptoes at the belt. Just incredibly intense. I loved CCR's version before. It was also the only one I knew. But after hearing Angelina, CCR was boring 😊

This is actually my first time hearing Screamin’ Jay Hawkins version of this song, even though I’ve always heard about it, and how it inspired Angelina Jordan‘s version. I can’t wait to hear the original master! I’m gonna listen to the studio recording to after this as well as his song “portrait of a man“. I saw all of these requested in the below comments.

A performance from much later than when he first recorded this oddball masterpiece in 1956. Hawkins had been a solid Blues singer and this song he wrote was intended to be a bluesy ballad. The story goes that the producer for the 'Spell' session brought in food and LOTS of alcohol. The band was hammered and most don't even recall playing the session. Maybe this was Screamin' Jay just fooling around between takes, while drunk, and the producer thought it so compelling they went with this Jump Blues/early Rock 'n' Roll style instead. Whatever the case, it worked and Hawkins got a huge hit from it. He would sometimes be brought out onstage lying in a coffin and rise with his skull wand in his hand. The weird outfits, skulls, fire, coffins, and other stage props were such a hit that other acts would follow Hawkins' lead. Screaming Lord Sutch in the pre-Beatles UK and 70's US act, Alice Cooper, were amongst those inspired by the original Screamin' Jay stage shows. As an aside, the guitarist for the original recording was Mickey Baker. Baker would have a major hit of his own, singing Love Is Strange with wife Sylvia.

Here’s my two cents worth; I was 6 years old when this came out in 1956 and remember hearing it on the radio. Hundred of singers a mature~professional have covered this song. Christina Augulara, Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc. but none can compare to 9 year old Angelina Jordan! She also covered his song Portrait of a Man but changed the lyrics to Portrait of a Child. Angelina also sings Billie Holiday, Nina S, Andy W, Queen, Whitney, Elvis and on and on. Thank you from Alaska and have some fun yourself!

You absolutely have to listen to the studio recordings. No comparison to this performance. I read in an interview with Jay Hawkins that he admitted he had never been sober on stage at the time (and not just with alcohol, his words). 🤗🤗 Please please make sure to watch Angelina's Black and White video with this song and her own arrangement. Jay performed this song for ten years or more, and as his career matured he brought in more of his opera singing talent. So look for a more recent performance to compare. But one thing to bear in mind is that he basically invented the "shock rock" genre popularized by Kiss, Alice Cooper, etc. So that in itself is a historic development.

If you have not already done it, Angelina Jordan at age 9 will blow your mind as it is considered one of the finest performances ever recorded by a 9-year-old! Another hysterical and great song? he does is called “Ignant and Sh..t”. Probably one of the funniest things I’ve ever listened to besides “Constipation Blues” and Dr John’s “Such a Night” which is also incredible, btw. It is his song. He's over the top dramatic. Angelina Jordan based her cover at 9 years old on this 1956 original. You should listen to his "Portrait of a Man." You'll get more of the operatic sense of his voice. Dramatic voice, but not over the top crazy. Truly, do listen to his "Portrait of a Man." Grandma Ellen, over & out. 💜

For better vocal performance you need to listen to the original recording of the song made in 1956 which hit the airwaves. This song was originally being developed as a blues song but the band all got drunk and they did something more along these lines and called it a swamp boogie. He was quite old here and probably very drunk. I think this was the first performance of this I ever saw when I was young and it was on The Arsenio Hall Show

Check out I love Paris to hear Screamin' Jay singing pretty normal. Also this isn't really the 'original' version. According to legend the first take was normal, pretty much like everyone else does it. Then everyone associated with the recording, Jay, band, producer, engineers, all went to a bar and got roaringly drunk. They came back to the studio and rerecorded it.

Have you ever heard Yma Sumac? She sang in an operatic style but didn't use actual words (which is okay because, in opera, nobody can understand a word you say, anyway), and she had a several octave range and could sing at least 2 notes at the same time. As for this song, except for them cutting off the opening where he comes out of a coffin, the old black & white video of this on Granada TV was better. The version on Arcineo Hall wasn't bad, either.
