Cynthia Erivo is genuinely one of the best vocalists ever! She is so expressive, and she does it with ease.

MORE CYNTHIA PLEASE!!!! Her performance of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U at Next at the Kennedy Center and her rendition of I (Who Have Nothing) live at Royal Albert hall are both my favorite performances from her and some of my favorite live performances ever! Her vocal technique is OFF THE CHARTS!!! Would 100% tune in to any future videos where you analyze her performance!

I adore your analysis. So passionate, detailed, knowledgeable. You're totally right about the audience clapping a note and ruining the moment. I've stopped going to Broadway and, to a lesser extent, West End shows shows now, because I'm so fed up with audiences whooping and cheering and screaming hysterically in the middle of a song. It isn't real appreciation, it's more about bringing attention onto themselves. Silence often creates the most powerful moments in musical theatre but you rarely experience it these days sadly.

I agree but I also understand why audiences are confused about proper etiquette. for musical theater, operatic performances, and serious soundtrack ballads like this one applause should be held to the end so the piece can have space to breathe. for pop, R&B, and gospel performances it could be argued that it is more disrespectful for the audience not to engage with the performer and make some noise.

People do not cheer to bring attention to themselves, but to release tension. And I can see why people in this audience might have thought the scene is over as it kind of felt like the major climax of the song had just come. Still they start cheering way before the note is over, which I also find mildly annoying. A bit early applause is nevertheless much less irritating than the current habit of people thinking they need to goddamit film everything with their crappy mobile phone, thereby illuminating their environment and sometimes even blocking sight for others.

You can thank Shirley Bassey for all that body language you’re praising at the beginning, cause that’s exactly how Shirley, one of Cynthias favourite artists, performs. I didn’t know that the Star-Spangled Banner is full of questions until you said it, lol.

Jess: I was aware that there were reaction videos to musical performances but I don't think I had ever either seen one or made it all the way through one before I stumbled onto your videos three years ago when you did your first analysis of Shoshana Bean (She Used To Be Mine). You have had me hooked ever since! I am always enthralled by your choice of artist & song as well as your charming, magical energy. (I do have a deep love for both Shoshana and Cynthia Erivo who are both masterclasses in blending training and nuanced technique with passionate storytelling!) But what always thrills me when new videos drop is the brilliant way you weave complex ideas like music/performance theory, various singing techniques, and articulation, ground and humanize them with care and love, and make them accessible for everyone -- from professional singers and performers to others who just love music and learning something new. 💖Thank you for always bringing a smile with everything you do!

I love your reactions! But if you want your ming blown, check out Gabriel Henrique performing Cynthia's "Stand Up" with Coral "Black to Black". Even Cynthia was floored, saying "I absolutely love it!". I'm 72 years old and I've heard many of the greatest singers, including Dimash. But I've never heard anything like this. Otherworldly.
