One note about his English -- even at the point of Episode 3 of The Singer when he performed The Show Must Go On; his total English was the most basic Hello greetings and Thank You... since his season on the show, he has been studying both English and Mandarin while touring (until the virus stopped things)... He still has a major accent, but in more recent performances you can definitely tell how hard he's working towards better pronunciation 😉

@Fabienne Daguet you do realise that not all countries have English lessons. In Kazakhstan the 2 languages are Kazakh and Russian. I am sure you speak multiple lessons of course. He has his Masters and working on his Doctorate at 26 so I can safely say he is studious. Not everyone speaks English. He was scheduled to join a University in California to study exchange but Covid hit. Perhaps thinking and wording things in a nicer way could be an option. I have lived in 7 countries. You?

@@maykacha4987 : I was not critising Dimash. I wondered if English' Dimash was really so basic at that time. I meant 2 hours per week during 3 years, for exemple. A lot of French attend English courses during some years and are unable to speak. And me I can read English and I am writing these few sentences without a dictionnary, but I am still unable to understand a video in English without subtitles (I'am over 50).

@@fabiennedaguet9796 its not a question of being studious. Dimash was a diligent student from childhood to date scoring the highest on his masters. @@fabiennedaguet9796 You obviously have no idea about the system of teaching foreign languages in post-Soviet countries. English is optional. For example, I studied German at school and institute. Maggie Reneé yes, you kind of forgot to check the date of the video before talking about his English, hope you know now that video is older than 3 years. He has short conversations with his dears in the concerts now. So, it’s not about learning one song language (diction), like maybe it’s what you are learning to do, he talks, he loves to share with his dears. Let me know when you reach that point in your career. You say don’t come after me, but you mentioned it twice. What’s the need. Don’t you think his audience haven’t noticed? He’s worried and working on it. For me, I love him enough to ignore that, because he’s just too awesome to give importance to something that eventually he will correct. But cultivating his art goes first for him and he dedicates his time to what is more important to him, I’m glad with all his choices.

Head shaking was due to exhaustion -- he was making almost daily plane travels to keep previously scheduled engagements. Also, to watch something in 2020 that was recorded is 2017 and comment about his English seems less than charitable. He had never spoken or sung in English before. I think he needs to be commended that he could learn the song phonetically in so short a period of time.
@giftsbygwen7420

You're right, Frederick Girl. For that competition they brought their own music for the 1st week. Then for the next 12 weeks they were given music to choose from on Monday. They had to learn it and produce an arrangement for band and singers to use the following Saturday night. During that 12 week period Dimash managed to learn five english songs including a duet tribute to Michael Jackson, a "boy band" english medley and 2 chinese songs. He is a perfectionist and worked incessantly to produce the best possible sounds he could in the short time he had to work with translators and learn the lyrics phonetically. Maggie, I'm not faulting your assessment of his performance. Unless you've delved into the fan, news and personal videos here on youtube and watched all the "I Am a Singer" videos there isn't any way for you to know how this came about and how hard he had to work to satisfy the audience and himself. So I caution your fans not to judge too harshly. By the way, the people they kept flashing to were his other competitors backstage watching him perform. One interesting note - after each show the 7 singers and their "music partners" did an internal vote to rank each singer's performance. For this song, "Adagio", Dimash was ranked #1 by his peers.

It's not less than charitable. She is reacting to this song, not a song in the future - I'm sure when she hears more of those she will be impressed with his improvement. She even said that she herself has to study and work hard to learn other languages. So it's not like armchair Larry who can barely even speak their native language commenting on it.

Dimash has been advancing his English studies. I can't imagine where he found the time for it before the lockdown, but he did. He's still a beginner, but I think what he has picked up will help him with English songs. He isn't resting on his laurels. Hmm, a recent song in English comes to mind - the trailer video for 'The Creators: The Past," an unreleased Italian movie. Supposedly science fiction, but of course it's really a fantasy; there's no real connection to science. The song is called 'Endless Dimensions.' His English is definitely improved in this video. There are some pretty heavy studio-applied effects, but it's still Dimash singing his heart out. Good! I can't recall if you reviewed that one or not. His English isn't so good in 'Adagio,' but who cares? Not me. It's a beautiful, dramatic, energetic piece, and I will never tire of hearing it again. Cheers!

So I am guessing they stayed more with European, Russian and Kazach classical pieces. Just a guess. So, my guess is popular music was his only real exposure to English. But, I do agree he needs to and is working on it. His English has come a long way from the singer.

I get so tired of people talking about his accent. I think that is part of his charm. I listen to him two or three hours every day. At this point, he didn't know English at all. A lot of singers have accents. The Italians, Spanish, and French. It's not like he is singing one type of song like opera. He has many fans that don't mind his accent.

You do know that he was only 22 and from Kazakhstan and how could he learn better before this performance? He had no time to learn better before this performance. He is fluent in his language and Russia. He is not nervous he had won numerous awards before he was even a teenager and many afterwards. I thought he did a wonderful job and so did the audience. He has perfect pitch and has since he was 5 years old. No one can sing better than him. He is the absolutely best singer in the world! Maggie Reneé I loved every reaction you did. There is a difference between the mispronunciation and the accent . One never lose the accent, it pops up unexpectedly, no matter how many years you speak the foreign language on a daily basis. Dimash, having perfect pitch, could learn to produce the lyrics in any language even the “th” (θ) or “the “(δ), which aren’t in the Russian and Kazakh. I suppose that his first goal was to show his vocal capability to the world, than continue better himself in every domain. He is perfect to me , even with his mispronunciations. I apologize for taking much of your time! Stay safe! See in the next reaction, of course!

I think for this competition when they choose a song to sing for the next round, they only have a week to prepare. That's not only the lyrics, but how the musical arrangement will be. Hey Maggie! Quick thing about the English thing. I truly get what you're saying about it because I had the same thoughts during the performance actually. I would also mention that, he was learning English really for the second time here on the show. The Singer went on for over 3 months... he was learning something back to back for weeks. I don't question Dimashes work ethic at all so I could only imagine how hard it was doing it all. Also to mention, 2 weeks later he was so sick he had to get steroids in his neck for one of his performances. That may have been him on the down-turn of getting sick. I've also heard others mention that the head shake may be due to him being so resonant... and not due to strain. You can also see it on Opera 2 if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for all you do though!!

Okay, Maggie Renee....I can bear to listen to accented Dimash, in fact, I love his accent, at whatever stage he has reached in learning English. What I cannot bear with equanimity is any slightest, minuscule, most infinitesimal criticism of Dimash, his singing, his pronunciation or enunciation or any fault with his style in clothing or his manner of doing this or doing that, his vocal choices or lifestyle or physical appearance, the shape of his nose or any other feature, or his mannerisms or the way he treats others,, or what he eats or how he looks when sleeping (in that utterly angelic way he has) or how he breathes or gives his "mwa" adorable kisses to thousands of people at a time....To make myself plain to you, there is something in a Dear that rises up howling in rage and an urgent"Don't say it! Don't say it" reaction to any criticism of that angel, that darling, that miracle of a singer and general performer, that exquisite 6'3" length of sweet-natured perfection that is Dimash. May he never learn the English language, to anyone else's satisfaction, should it so please him....He may chop it to smithereens and it will be as fluent as his beloved Kazakh or the Italian of "Ogni Pietra." He can do no wrong. Some there may be who find a flaw, but I--and most of the many millions of Dears in the world--will feel at least some objection to it being considered necessary to mention such a thing. I realize that you feel it is your job, as a reactor, to say such things. As a Dear, it is equally my job to protest. And now, I believe I have done so. I shall not have an occasion, again, to trouble you with the agitation I feel at having heard him so maligned.

you know what's fun? you know the song so I can see you kind of anticipating where Dimash might go, then when he doesn't because he's beyond where he should be, your expressions are Priceless because you understand how far beyond he actually goes. the beauty of Dimash is his randomness, his range allows him to do things most singers cannot and his instincts to do these things are what draws you in. Just a suggestion....when you do a reaction to Dimash’s singing, try to ignore his pronunciation of English. When he was 24 he said, “ two years ago I could say Hi my name is Dimash”. He was 22 at the time of this contest. They showed a video of Dimash being coached on his Chinese pronunciation for a song he sang in the competition. He didn’t speak any Chinese or English at that time. Dimash won this round in the competition. For most people his beautiful singing outweighs some mispronunciation in his English. Check out “Hello” on Singer. He did a guest performance the year after he participated in the Singer contest. You’ll see quite a bit of improvement in his English pronunciation.

I am glad Dimash was able to do sing in so many different languages in a short time. However, I had hoped that my honesty in what I was hearing in this particular video would be appreciated and understood. What kind of a reactor would I be if I said everything is wonderful all the time?? @@maggiereneemusic I don't think what is sought by the Dears, in response to Dimash is honesty that places itself above our regard for him. It is not rational but then, is any creature such as Dimash even POSSIBLE? No, and yet there he is, for many of us the miracle of our lifetimes. It's not really that you shouldn't criticize, but perhaps in future there is someone else more deserving of it. It is, I repeat, not POSSIBLE that he should even exist. This was back in 2017 during The Singer competition in China and he barely spoke any English at all. So any song he sung in English he learned phonetically. He's been really working on it these last 3 years. The episode right before this was "Uptown Funk " which while he got everyone joining in and having fun it wasn't technical or needing any skill and was his lowest placement (6th). He wasn't pleased with his performance of it. Not only that, as a native Russian speaker, the Russian pronunciation of foreign Opera singers is, excuse me for the word, horrible. Only a native speaker can understand if a pronunciation is good. Hi Maggie remember that in 2017 Dimash's priority was China, thus, English pronounciation was not his priority, because he was almost unknown abroad of Kazhastan. Afterwards he has improved his French and English and Italian fluency.

I don't understand why some of his fans attack anyone who has something even slightly critical to say. I knew when she said something about his English that the comments would come for her. Give it a rest, people. She never said he was bad or that she didn't enjoy it.

I think the issue for most people is that she assumed he didn't prepare enough without knowing anything about the circumstances. And they provide context. As for the toxic fans, they're probably like that as people, otherwise they wouldn't attack strangers on KZbin. And they're inevitable on the Internet. Not justifying them at all, but it's not that unexpected.

No. She said he "should have put in more effort". That is not criticizing the performance. It's criticizing the person behind the performance. SHE should have put in more effort to not be so judgemental. Especially since it is obvious that she herself can not tolerate any criticism directed at her. I find it very hypocritical to attack people for giving their "honest" opinion about someone who uses giving her "honest" opinion as a shield from negative comments. This whole episode has turned from our enjoying Dimash , into stroking someones fragile ego. There are hundreds of other ways to enjoy Dimash's talent, without all the "oh poor me" crap.

Hi, Maggie! Always enjoy your reactions. I would very much like to see your reaction to the song Samaltau performed by Dimash at the jazz festival in Tokyo.. Believe me, this is an incredible performance of a Kazakh folk song about a simple Kazakh guy who was taken as a soldier in the tsarist army to fight in the great war in 1916 . I would very much like to hear your opinion as a professional about the performance of this song by Dimash.

BUT, you should know that he didn't speak English at the time and I would like to see you or anyone else learn this song in a language you don't know in just ONE week. Besides. English is one of the most difficult language to sing, if it is not your first language (or second).

Did he have to sing this song? I assume he chose it, because he knew it. Learning a song in a foreign language in a week is a challenge for anyone, and probably best avoided. As viewers, we don't always have the back story, and it shouldn't be expected that we do or care. That's just a fact of life for any professional performer, they don't provide a list of excuses every time they sing.

Hi!

I just remind myself that this is from 2017 on a competition show for which he had to learn a new song each week. His English has improved a lot since then but his accent still sneaks through a bit. I don't care though. Listening to him is a gift whether I understand what he's saying or not. As he primarily sings in other languages I don't understand it's not a huge stretch for me.

@@maggiereneemusic I've watched all of your Dimash reactions multiple times! I absolutely love them! My favorite is Ogni Pietra. I've lost count of how many times I've watched that one. When I first started watching Dimash perform I struggled with his English. After a while I just turned it off and enjoyed the music for what it was. I find it much easier to tune the accent out than I would if he was pitchy lol. That's my hot spot. It literally makes my ears hurt and I start twitching. It's one of the reasons I love him so much. He never makes me twitch. He sang Hello (by Lionel Ritchie) on the show the year after he was on it. His English had improved a lot just over that time. Plus he has a belting section in that one that literally makes my brain explode! I only speak English so I have no idea how his pronunciation is in any of the other languages he sings in but I do appreciate the effort he's put in over the years on improving his English. Love you bunches!

I agree his English at this point was rough and even to this day it better but not as good as I'm sure he would like it to be. His Mandarin is much better today than his English but I think that is a result spending more time in China and performing.

Maggie, this is my second post. I love your enthusiasm and appreciation for Dimash. Your intro always seems to show an expression of joyousness. I think that the reason you (and others) get push-back when commenting on Dimash's accent is that it happens invariably when a reactor is watching something that is now years old. Those of us who follow Dimash, know that over these last several years he has gone from singing different languages phonetically to actually studying the languages. Anyone trying to learn a new language in a different alphabet can find it daunting. So I think even the slightest criticism can be taken for a need for us Dears to jump to his defense. It's amazing to think that there are so many of us out there who act like momma bears around their cub!! Anyway, I have seen all of your Dimash reactions and hope you will continue them. Peace.

I appreciate your support and yes, I agree that it takes a lot of guts and is difficult to sing in a foreign language. That's why we all work so hard at it, including Dimash. I had hoped that my honesty would be appreciated. What kind of a reactor would I be if I said everything is wonderful all the time?? No one is perfect, but like Dimash we all strive to do the best we can by putting in many years of language diction study, at least in the classical world. Thank you so much for your support. 🧡💛🧡💛🧡
