Would it shock you to find out that Mitch didn't really use the megaphone in the recording? It was just a prop on location the night they were shooting the video and he decided to use it for a visual effect. Whenever they perform this song live, he does it just with his voice...no megaphone...and it works! Another fun fact...they worked on this song for FIVE YEARS before they actually recorded it. They were so respectful of the original Queen version that they wanted the song to be absolutely perfect before they committed it to audio. They must have done something right, because Brian May himself loved the recording and video so much that he posted it on everyone of his social media platforms the day it was released. And did you notice that Kevin actually sang the last line?

Hi Maggie. Kirstin has a love of and the dream to be on Broadway. I've read that she also has some classical training and was one of the stars of the Broadway play "kinky boots" and she has said that she would love to do more plays. One of the things I've noticed about her is that she has so many different singing voices. Also the clarity of her voice in what she sings. She is so versatile !

Kevin was giving you a full drum kit, Avi was giving you a bass and a bass guitar over the course of this video. He also does the wind effect while still singing the bass line. And that megaphone is a prop. That was all Mitch making the electric guitar solo. If you check out the live performance, that becomes clear. I thought I also heard a synthesizer sound mocking the keyboards in the piece at a couple of points.

Great reaction! I know I've commented before. But I have to say this is the best. Brian May of Queen loved it. And it's a true tribute. The part where they pan to the stars, the four shooting stars are for the band members and for Brian May who got his degree in astrophysics. Wonderful job by PTX.
@richdiddens40593 жыл бұрын
I've heard that Dr. Brian May was very supportive of this video. On the Kirstin/Scott call and response for Gallileo I think they did that one part better than Queen. If you listen to the original closely they're a little off, maybe flat or something. Kirstie and Scott are dead on pitch. The panning effect at the beginning was on the original recording. To make this video they rented a section of a road from 10PM until 6AM. And they were pushed to finish it on time. If you watch the background you can see the pre-dawn lighting on the horizon a few times. A lot of their videos take several hours to film and the changes in the natural light have been noticeable if you look. To counter this they used a small high intensity light in the background on their Sounds of Silence video as the natural lighting changes were even greater on it. Their is or was a video on KZbin about the making of this video.

You bring so much information and point out subtleties that my ears pick up but my brain doesn't and it lets me appreciate the music more than I already do. Mitch does a great job as a guitar, Kevin does numerous percussion instruments with his voice & he can also play the cello. Kristen and Mitch, to me, must be the ones who make the violin, viola, and harp sounds - I think that they are killing those sounds in the end of Hallelujah...Avi, Scott, & Matt also seem to be doing very fine imitations of pianos (especially in the lower end of the register) on numerous songs. Love you, Lady! Keep up the wonderful work!

Please let me know if you hear it too. They do a number of homages to Queen in this video, but when Mitch comes in with the start of his solo, I closed my eyes and almost heard Freddie Mercury's voice returned. I think he was homageging the the late great Freddie. And Freddie was classically trained at, I believe, Juilliard, and Avi was also classically trained as an operatic bass. I am a baritone, at the center of the baritone field, but I can cover down to bass, and cover up to a high tenor, almost hitting Mitch-slap territory, but what I cannot do is slide the scales there. I have to consciously alter my key to the new range. I can do minor slides within a particular range field, but I cannot slide an entire 4 octaves like a couple of these people can. And I can approximate belting, but I have heard very few who can belt as well as Kirstie can. The there is the angelic beauty that is Mitch's voice. Then there are Scott and Avi trading off bass and baritone depending on who is singing the lead part. Kevin with the beat boxing and literally an entire drum kit in his vocal cords, almost reminiscent of what Michael Winslow can do with sound effects in general. And when Mitch did that guitar solo with his voice, that got me first time I heard it. There is no end to the surprises these people provide. Their Carol of the Bells is a beautiful rendition of the song, and their Sounds of Silence and Imagine are spectacular homages. I highly recommend them.

@barefootalien3 жыл бұрын
@Joshua Hotz Damn straight, he does. I'm so tired of people still mourning Avi leaving. It was over a third of PTX's _existance_ ago! Can Matt do overtone throat singing? No. Does he have Avi's warm, rich tone? No. But does Avi have Matt's uncanny precision with large interval jumps and tricky bass guitar riffs? Not even close! Can Avi blend with the rest of the group totally seamlessly? No, he always kind of stood out, because his voice is _so_ iconic. Plus with Avi leaving, now the world gets to hear Avi's solo work. It's a win-win! It's just about as bad as people who completely abandoned Dream Theater when Mike Portnoy _quit the band,_ like they were disloyal to him somehow for not... what? Tying him to his throne and forcing him to play? I've even heard people speak of _both_ cases in phrases like, "Since they got rid of [Avi/Portnoy]". Was Avi great? Yeah, he was. Did I miss him for a while, too? Sure, I did. But lately, now that I've heard what Matt can bring to the group now that he's had time to gel with them and to get comfortable as a member, I actually find myself wishing I could see Matt in the older videos... I find myself cringing just a little at Avi's slightly sloppy large-interval jumps, and the way he always stands out in the mix, even when he's not supposed to.

Just had to watch your reaction to this incredible piece again. Every time I hear it there are new layers to discover. The one constant and consistent magical moment is that amazing final resolve from the penultimate to the ultimate chord. The penultimate chord is magic, then to hear Mitch raise his pitch exactly 1/64th of a tone, at precisely the right split second to tune that last chord still gives me goosebumps.

I have Bose speakers and their sub woofer. I don't like headphones they're deadly for the ear after a while at the volume I want. At 77 I still have great hearing. Mitch is a great counter tenor. I love his voice and Avi, Kirsten, Kevin and Mitch....AMAZING! Brilliant!

OK, Maggie…so I’ve listened to their cover like a billion times and I’ve watched your reaction ( 😁) like 700 million times and I’ve never noticed until today….Mitch’s voice in this, especially at the end when he’s down in his chest has a really Karen Carpenter quality to it. Am I imagining it? Anybody hear it?

I found Pentatonix via Lindsey Stirling. They did an Imagine Dragons Rafioactive cover with her. You also get to hear Kevon blend his cello with Lindsey's violin.

Nice thing about a repost is the excuse it gives to come back and watch a great react video again. Not that you really need an excuse to want to watch Maggie react to Pentatonix or a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. May I suggest you add to your Pentatonix playlist and your copyright battles with You Tube, with a react video of Pentatonix Daft Punk . Yes Maggie Avi is still with the group for this one as well.

@@stevensallsorts definitely. I've never heard a better cover of it. I really like Mitch's "guitar solo" and Kevin's ,I don't like to call it beat boxing, because its so much more than that. They say a drummer is the motor that makes a band run and that is what Kevin is for these guys.

Did you notice that the last line in the song, "Any way the wind blows" was sung by Kevin? He has a very sweet tenor but you don't get to hear it very often because he's too busy with the beatboxing and filling out the harmony.

I just want to say that I really appreciate how you analyse and comment on the technical elements of their music. Of course it's something you'd naturally do as a singer of opera, where those finer elements receive more explicit focus, but for someone like myself who watches a lot of these reaction videos (Pentatonix or otherwise), it's an interesting change to hear about things like text painting, which most other reactors (even vocal coaches) don't often talk about. 👸🏻
