Man, to this day I still tear up at Roy's part. Now we're down to just Bob and Jeff. I still remember when this group formed. @@leadabo good point, Jim Keltner is one of the big Heavy Weights in his own right as a in the background sessional drummer. Heavily sort out to play the drums by all the Big Boys and Girls. Most don't read the credits to all the biggest classic songs, but when they do any of them will have him quietly credited as the drummer. Same with Sheryl Crow. Despite having her own big career and being fairly well known, she has her name everywhere as a quiet background sessional guitarist for many big musicians.

You hear Harrison, you hear the Boys from Liverpool. You hear Lynne, you hear ELO. Petty is Petty. You hear Dylan, you hear the 60s. And then there's Orbison. Someone once asked Elvis how it felt to have the greatest voice in rock and roll. Elvis replied "I don't know. Ask Roy Orbison". You hear his tenor and you can only imagine if he had turned that gift to opera.

The successes of the individual Wilburys prior to forming the group are phenomenal, they were all extremely successful in their own rights. They were a group of friends and acquaintances with a shared love of music and plenty of mutual respect for each other, that just had fun and made great music together. They didn't even list their real names on the two albums. The tributes to Roy Orbison in the video were subtle, but perfect. Sadly two other Wilburys have left us since then.

You kind of just breezed over the whole "supergroup" thing. A lot of what's so special about this song is the people and their history. Take the 5 biggest stars today and put them in group and they still wouldn't compare to what these guys did for music and music history. Bob Dylan alone has full or partial writing credits on well over 500 songs that included hits for many other artists as well as for himself. Jimi Hendrix' "All Along the Watchtower", Johnny Cash's "Wanted Man" and Adele's "Make You Feel My Love" were just a few of his. Oh, and George Harrison was in a band called The Beatles. So, there's that. ;)

When the album was released, after the first listen, I took note of the "Vol. 1" and hoped so much it meant there would be a second. Rumour had it that they were going to release a second album with Del Shannon to try to replace Roy Orbison but it just never happened due to life events amongst the various Wilburys. Supposedly, they wrote the lyrics as a group, then Bob Dylan would take the day's output home and come back the next day with suggested edits. No one would even read the edits, they always decided just to go with whatever Bob had decided. Hard to imagine working with such incredibly gifted musicians.
