I loved it for it's artistry. What a beautiful film. What warmth and grandeur. What presence. There IS a story in this film. It's a story of heartbreak, regret, and resilience. One has to have lived a full life to really enjoy this movie and respond to it's silence, as well as it's performance. Angelina Jolie is magnificent in it. Her silence said more to me than most of her lines. What the eyes convey. Lordy. Go see it in a proper theater if you can. Once it goes to N, so much may be lost.

Hollow and pointless, beautifully filmed, but that’s it . Jolie brings nothing of Callas, and nor does the dialogue, like his other two movies, style over substance, a hard no !

@@jenylogan1 exactly! jolie is unable to bring anything to the GREAT MARIA CALLAS. No one can. a movie about Maria Callas is an insult to her extraordinary beingness - her beauty, her pain, her soul, her heart, her Spirit. How insane, insulting, absurd, arrogant that Jolie and any of these people thought to make a film about the queen Maria Callas. The sad people is is that most people will think they know who, what, why, where and the soul of Maria Callas from watching this trash movie. Don't go to this movie, just buy all of Maria Callas' CDs, vinyls, and watch all her actual youtube videos of her performances and all the real interviews we have of the REAL Maria throughout her life. NO FILM does any justice to Maria. Stop watching garbage movies. they are eveeel distortions making $$$ off of the great souls who have lived on our Earth and moved millions. STOP watching synthetic fakes and WATCH THE REAL THING! #WatchTheRealThing

We must remember that this movie depicts the last days of Maria, when she was losing her voice. So Angelina’s singing with her being a newbie in opera singing is perfect for this movie plus her excellent acting skills.

Your discussion of Maria's health issues, from your own experience, adds a vital dimension that very few reviewers would have

I watched Maria last night, and was so moved. I lack the words to fully explain how deeply Jolie's portrayal resonated with me. But just wow. I'm so excited to watch it again. This is such an excellent, nuanced review. I do see a plot in the film myself, but see why you dont see one. I think the plot isnt immediately apparent because of the conclusion of the film. Many movie plots revolve around a chafacter's deepest desire and whether or not they will attain it. I see that type of plot here, and ultimately the conclusion was no, Callas won't. 💔

As an opera singer, I greatly agree with your points. I look forward to the movie, and I think it's an incredible opportunity to see Jolie expand her career into character acting. And it's clear that she poured all of herself into this role. But, it would have been good for the movie to have juxtaposed the bigness of Callas as the opera diva that she was more equally against her inner struggles. It's admirable that Jolie immersed herself in vocal training to prepare for the role, but nothing she could do in 7 months could bring her on par to Callas even at her worst. So, the singing bit seems more like Hollywood marketing and special effects than anything else. Imagine what it might have been like if an actual opera singer had been cast in this role. It would be very different. There are many great singers who are also great actors who could bring the true passion of singing and the operatic world to this story. It's sad that Hollywood keeps putting big name nonsingers into singing roles. I've also lived with CFS since I was 29 (I am now 63), so I am greatly empathetic with your struggles. People don't realize how physical singing is and how much energy it takes to fill a room with sound and passion. I learned to schedule recovery time after my performances. And to baby myself. I was only a semi professional singer. I can't imagine the pressure of singing for a living while living with a debilitating disease. That said, it certainty helps us to appreciate how incredible a gift it is when we can bring it all together to move people with our voices. I hope that you find your way to health and beautiful singing.

It’s not about who’s face is looking like Maria for the role. It’s about who is the most suitable, most experienced and talented actress out there or in Hollywood to portray Maria as credible as possible (100% resemblance doesn’t exist for nobody). And I think that Angelina did an incredible job, she is a real artist and has a natural grace around her that is similar to Callas’.

While it may be true that she was actually singing while being filmed, how do you think they could possibly arrange it that recordings, made 50 years earlier, exactly matched her lips? Besides that, opera singing is stressful and involves power. You have to fill up the whole theater over the orchestra and chorus with no mic! So your face changes. It also changes depending on the vowel and the height of the note. It's not a put down Evangelina Jolie to say she lip-synced Callas. On the contrary! She did a fabulous job!

@beqamarsagishvili6988 i would never give my money or my attention to watch this movie disgracing the epic essence of Maria Callas which refuses her to vapid fashion and haughty posing. MARIA CALLAS soul and spirit is unduplicatible. I agree completely. The film was painfully slow. Almost like a very long photo-op of Jolie. Wonderful cinematography, design, costuming and sound. The flashbacks were far too few. Jolie simply didn't have enough training to understand the physical demands of Bel Canto. Neither could Jolie capture the mystery of everything about Callas. Helmut Berlinger is magnificent and especially natural in the role of Onassis. I am very very old and a former member of the Dallas Civic Opera company.

If she knew she had that she would not have liked all the poking, and jabbing and the meds definitely do not cause hallucinations so there's no fun time lol The movie was very accurate in that regard, if she was taking prednisone and a bunch of other weird meds without medical supervisor no wonder her liver was failing, it is not meant for long term use. I've also been told about the the larynx, vocal cords, heart and lungs damage. Right now I am at stage that talking for more than 30 minutes makes my voice hoarse and I'm not a singer. I don't know anything about Opera except that it sounds pretty but I loved the movie and I'm a big fan of Angelina and Larrain so I was looking forward to the opinion of an expert.

You were right on about watching a portrait , or many portraits of Maria Callas in a gallery. Perhaps, it was a curation of Callas's arias exhibition. Too many beautifully crafted scenes to mention. Sitting through the entire movie, I wanted to find Callas in Jolie, but there were only a few moments I would do a double take. As an avid fan of Maria Callas I could spot where Jolie ended and Callas took over, but I have to give credits to the sound engineering and impeccable editing, the transitions were seamless. To be seamless, Jolie performance wasn't effortless. Even though she lip-synced, it wasn't an easy thing. Lip-syncing to an aria is different from lip-syncing to a song like "Baby one more time". Therefore, someone should understand this before criticizing if Jolie did a good job or not with her singing. Love your perspective from a professional POV.

I watched with my daughter a few days ago. I thought it was crazy to have someone who took a few singing lessons play Maria Callas, perhaps the best opera singer of her day. Just the warped situation in movie-making and music now. I ended up not hating the movie. I felt badly for Callas without ever feeling good for her and reacted by listening to the movie Judy with my daughter the next day. At the end of Judy, my daughter was in tears. And she scolded me because the emotional toll compared to Maria was a lot more. I'm going to note that Renee Zellweger sang herself. Though not Judy Garland, Zellweger has her own singing chops.

I would have liked to have seen more of the passion and, as you mentioned, more realistic body movements of an opera singer-especially one like Callas. every interview i have watched, angelina jolie has said she learned how to sing for this, and she wore an ear piece and they mixed their voices together. she might have not used all of maria’s visible techniques but i believe she was singing with classical technique. i think this conversation also begs the question “was maria callas’ tension specifically in her neck, healthy, and she pedagogically correct?” i love maria callas and am an avid fan…but we can’t have it all in every artist…and every body/voice is different. I don’t think all of jolie’s singing shots were particularly *beautiful or pretty. they were raw, and what i would expect from an opera singer today on stage.

Like most biopics, it probably isn't. The problem with this one and the one about the early years of Dylan in N.Y. is.... their faces. These are people, (especially Callas), that had faces and phisicalitiys that defined them. Chosing actors like these, you know, «beautiful people» is starting with a very wrong foot. Having said that, that «small detail has everything to do with her sexuality, her self worth, and yes, falling in love with toads throughout her life. To presume this actress doing this character dealt with these issues is NOT believable. So, it's another biopic I wont be seeing about this singer. Or the one about Dylan. It's plastic...

Ofcourse, the final audio is mixed and remastered, final sound may not be fully Angeline. But the point is, Angeline did not lipsynch during the filming, lipsynch is when you only move your lips along with the audio, but not actually singing it. But Angeline SANG it live with live music/instrument. and there was no PRERECORDED sound at all. Watch the interview with the whole sound director, sound mixer, etc the line of producer and sound director. Please give credit where its due.

Your vehemence is commendable but misplaced. All the great singing in the movie is Maria Callas. Where the singing is that of Callas in the last week of her life, that's mostly Angelina with a few Callas phrases artfully woven in. This is not to disparage Angelina Jolie in any way. For a non operatic singer to be able to sing as she did after just a few months of study is amazing, just to say the very least. But all it can possibly hope to do is to bring you up to an amateur level. Moreover, she can't actually even sing at her best, as she's portraying a dying woman. This is not to say that Angelina didn't do a magnificent job. She absolutely did! But it takes a lifetime of hard work and stage and life experience to reach the level of Callas. In fact only one person ever did...

Thank you for your review! Thank god "Callas" is on Netflix so I'm able to rewind scenes. I was following the movie quite intently, then I must have blinked and then Callas is walking around and being interviewed by some guy named Mandrax. Wait, what? Isn't Mandrax her pills? I'm so confused, then I realized, "Ohhhh, this is all happening in her head!" Then, my head start to ask a lot of questions. Did Maria Callas speak with an British accent? Much like Madonna spoke during her Guy Ritchie phase. Why is Angelina speaking like that? Maria Callas was American! All in all, it's kind of a disappointment. Better they made a theatrical version of Terence McNally's "Master Class." That would be more intriguing! Or better yet, "The Lisbon Traviata!" It doesn't have Callas as an actual character, but it is all about Callas or rather a supposed bootleg copy of her performance of "La Traviata" in Lisbon.

I’m sorry but you’re not getting this entirely correct in my opinion!! I understand what you’re going on about when you’re going on about ‘beautiful faces’ whilst singing/ performing, and that’s utter nonsense I’m afraid!! Do some due diligence and research and peruse the countless thousands of pictures taken of Maria during her performances, particularly during her golden period at La Scala in the fifties, from La Vestale to her last Medea’s, 1959 ish!! Or even her Zeffirelli final Norma in Paris!! She never looked so breathtaking!! So that statement is unequivocally bogus!! I don’t really comprehend just what exactly you’re trying to put across in this all over the place ‘review’?? Callas was an anathema…a blazing comet that eclipsed everything that went before and not a single person has ever managed to either equal since, let alone ‘outshine’!! Of course Angelina was never going to be able to replicate Callas to the intangible luminosity that she alone imbued, precisely because of the fact that there has only ever been one Callas!! But all things considered, I have a very strong sense that she has done as close a proximation as humanly possible, and for the fact alone that she accorded Maria the empathy she more than deserves, is probably enough for me!! As long as she didn’t damage her legacy then I’m happy!! Callas stands alone. And for extremely sound and solid reasons!! La Divina…🌟

Making Crap up because the Director/Writer can't be bothered to do actual research and deliver an Honest Portrayal of an Incredible woman of Immense talent is so Lazy and Disrespectful. This is why the Film Industry is Failing. No Truth. Especially when covering History. Epic Fail. Angelina Jolie gave a meh performance. I adored this fim. This movie was so incredibly feminist. It reminded me a lot of the musical Unusual Way. To me, it felt like it was about what it means to be an autere soprano in the opera world. What it means to have the role of a female muse foisted upon her. She was never truly respected by her audience as a person. She was only desired as a woman. And the two could not be separated. This; I think, was the point of the film. She could not escape herself. And so we only got snippets of who she was. Mainly with her staff. They knew her.

This movie is similar to “Callas Forever”. Both films cover the last years of Callas as she tried to relive her former glory. Both films center around her fragile psyche and fast health decline. This is a bigger budget production than “Callas Forever” but I feel as a fictional film based on a real character “callas forever” is the better film. This is truly more of an art piece than a Hollywood movie.

Totally agree. Zefferelli's film was a homage to his dear friend & colleague. Fanny Ardant was amazing. Jeremy Irons , Joan Plowright..wow

The Bernstein movie (the most recent comparable film) was annoying because his wife was so clueless and clingy. That is an honest male perspective. Wicked is left-wing propaganda and horrific. That is an honest objective opinion.

Hello, I just want to thank you for your thoughts on this film, enjoyed your perspective and I frankly had a lot of trepidation about seeing this film as I am so familiar with La Callas from my own background. Did not like it though as it does not represent the spiritual and dynamic force of who Maria Callas was and how she influenced and changed opera, made bel canto popular, as well as living a passionate life. I do agree with everything you share about the beauty of this piece of film & Ms. Jolie was good - but frankly I was more engaged by the couple taking care of her, and hearing Callas’s voice is always a treasure even when her voice was changing as she changed. Good for the film industry in releasing such a piece though 😂🎭 not really a Hollywood style film but more a piece of art. Happy Holidays 🎄2024.

I won’t see this movie, I Love Maria Callas but not at all a fan of AJ, could they seriously not find someone better suited for the role?

All music bio movies usually inaccurate...documentaries better way to go!

I clicked on it because of Callas. You speak very well. The one clip of her singing Bolena looks nothing like Callas. As a retired singer that will probably annoy me, but not the GP. I’m looking forward to seeing this movie and discovering your posts.

I saw Maria and it's to me the movie of the year! Angelina Jolie is wonderfully amazing! I'm sorry to don't agree with you, Angelina Jolie is actually signing!! I think you need to do more research about Angelina signing in the movie!! Please, do some research about it!! I hope I am not wrong, but you are wrong, Angelina Jolie is signing!!

I love your passion and that you enjoyed the movie and that you're obviously an Angelina Jolie fan just like I am. It is very clear that you're not an opera person. A lot of the time we're hearing the voice of Maria Callas. Nobody before or after her ever could sing like Callas. So it's no disgrace that we hear a Callas recording while watching Angelina on screen. In some scenes they cut between Callas singing on stage and Angelina in the studio. There you can hear the difference between the two voices. 😮

No, I clicked because of Maria. I also, don’t think she looks anything like Maria. That’s not to say Angelina isn’t a good actress, I love and adore her but maybe not right for the role?

Glad to hear other thoughts! Human faces are so interesting - to one person's eye (Person A) can look exactly like (Person B), but to another they simply don't see it, and see a totally different-looking (Person C) instead! As a mental exercise: who in Hollywood right now would you personally think looks more like Maria than Angelina does? Like, if you could wave a magic wand and recast this based on looking-like-Maria alone, who would you cast? :)
@Alb140313 күн бұрын
@ personally I don’t think anyone in Hollywood right now resembles Maria. Maybe the casting director should have done more digging to have found someone who has similar eye expressions as Maria, eyebrows, nose, jawline, someone Mediterranean I suppose. Maria spoke with eye and brows movements, a lot of her emotions were there. I’m sure there are a lot of struggling actresses who maybe resembles Maria are waiting for that just one opportunity. The movie is getting a lot of great attention so I am very excited to watch it soon ☺️
@marie-chr612612 күн бұрын
a longer nose a face more skinny and less lips so sincerely I think A Jolie is not for this role I would have thought somebody more Greek profile it gives surely Mediterranean women looking more like Callas In the past the films were often done with newcomers not always famous stars and were so good
@SwimmerPrince12 күн бұрын
@Alb1403 how far do they have to look for someone who 1. Looks exactly like Callas 2. Can deliver a great acting performance 3. Can sing opera 4. Can pull big audience... might as well scrap the plan
@Alb140312 күн бұрын
@ Eehh, plenty of struggling actors in NY or LA I’m sure, waiting for that one chance. Angelina looks nothing like Callas but maybe find someone similar to Callas? Also, Angelina never sang before, why scarp the plan when you can find a hidden gem somewhere? Or maybe find an International actress who looks similar not exactly like Callas. There are plenty of choices.

If you know nothing or very little about one of the greatest artists of 20th century you will like Maria the movie. But for myself as an adoring fan and someone who spent days watching, analyzing every move and note and you study singing and love opera and bel canto this is just terrible. I also can not understand why focus on sad last days and not enjoy the life of primadona from the highs to the lows. Just the lows-acting is poor and A. Jolie is not even aprox. Of Callas in any way. The only who could to justice to Madame Callas might be Marly Streep...As this stands this movie is a grand disappointment. 50years after her final recital and this is the best they could do. Shame.

The movie bored the living daylights out of me. It said in 2 hours what it could have said in 10 minutes. We get it. She was losing her voice and she was addicted to pills and she was alone. Blah blah blah. I literally fell asleep three times trying to get through this snooze fest. To be fair, this is nothing to do with Angelina Jolie. She did her best, but what a crappy script written by a 10-year-old for a school play project.
