Matt! ZJ owner here. I know you gave the cheap jeep away but here is what my experiance owning one has tought me. They do better with WJ arms and WJ front sway bar. And they like it when you replace the thermostat with a 180° and water pumps are known to FAIL from time to time they are old so coolant flushes are good any time you buy one just flush it by default. The V8 likes hood louvers. Also the plenum pan seal is failed on all of them replace it and replace the plenum pan with an aluminum pan so it doesn't fail again. Head gaskets and valve cover gaskets oil pan seal replace by default. Outside of the range of a "cheap jeep" they like a set of EQ heads the mopars crack usually. And a kegger mod or 98 and up plenum will get you a lot more power and so will the EQ heads. An IAC off a Dakota will give you a lot better and very noticeable throttle response at low RPM! Every thing I mentioned accept for the heads, seals, coolant, water pump and thermostat are junkyard items. Oh and the dang idle pulleys always fail especially when you over heat. I replaced with SKF high temp grease pulleys you have to get them on Amazon. You have to replace the idle tensioner pulley with a metal servicable one of an Asian car or super duty or they will be Chinese and you will replace it every year or two. Actually I have the same pulley problem on my fort in the case of the idle tensioner. Do these things and the jeep will be bullet proof. Its a good idea to seafoam them as well due to the plenum failure. Carbon builds up in the cylinders and you can actually vaccume it out eventually LOL! Happened to me! Took the carbon out in huge chunks had pre ignition due to compression ratio changing via loss of displacement. They like E3 spark plugs and stock style MSD ignition coil. They like the cables as well but you must get titanium EMI suppression boots or everyone on a radio will hear your ignition. Their are also free mods for power aka keger mod, port matching and throttle body mod. Oh and they like long tube headers to replace the rusted out manifolds and flowmaster sounds best on the mopar with 3" exhaust. Flowmaster 10 to 44 is nice 50 is a little quiet but sounds good. 10 is LOUD! Nice deep throughty sound! Not that magnaflow race care high rpm sound BS! They like to have their fenders trimmed or more like your tires will appreciate it. Their are some sharp protruding welds in the front fender wells trim and weld them or kiss your tires good bye. They need high carbon front brakes front and rear or a big brakes system they warp their small rotors a lot. Make sure to correct alignment when lifting and be sure to use semi metallic or ferro carbon brake pads with your high carbin rotors. I will be looking for some boot in brake upgrades soon but the advice I gave for stock is good. Also they like the Dakota and Durango master brake cylinder. I hear the WJ master brake cyoinder is better but their may be clearance issues with the booster if you choose to use that booster it. And I like to put an oversized truck brake fluid tank on them it helps the fluid not get to low when your pads wear down especially when hill climbing but he wear clearance to the hood. Dodge tanks work with an 8th inch clearance. And flush the brake fluid any time you buy a ZJ and use a high temp fluid like the Pentosin. Sorry this was so long...

i have a 98 jeep Cherokee classic. a garage put wayyy over sized front sway bar bushings and i almost died from death wobble and now it needs just about the front end fixed. they won't take responsibility except they put on the right bushings then came out amd told me everything was F'ed. when they put the wrong ones in i told them to make sure i didnt need anything else and they told me everything was good. well now i dont have anything to wheel in and it use to be something me my wife and 4yr old loved to do. So if anyone lives on the south western PA and can help me out i would owe you big time. im hard on cash but maybe we can work something out.
