It was the UN who helped the Somali people they were sent to alleviate the 1992 famine, and began trying to establish democracy and restore a central government. This fiasco involving the 2 Black Hawks was all-American. It was a mission to attack a meeting as part of the campaign to capture or kill Aidid's Interior Minister, Abdi Hasan Awale. who was attending a meeting involving prominent Habr Gidr members along with members of other Hawiye subclans and clan elders to discuss a peace initiative (this was corroborated by multiple aid and justice organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Doctors Without Borders, along with journalists in Mogadishu). Scant commentary was given to it at the end but the American forces trapped were rescued by a relief column of UN troops mainly Malaysian mechanized infantry companies, a Pakistani tank platoon and a US infantry (from the mountain division I think). It was regarded in Wahington as a fiasco and was one of the main reasons why US troops were ordered out of Somalia not long after.
