Lauren , I'm 60 and starting playing a couple of years ago. It's great learning a beautiful song like operator. Got a matchbook old and faded , you can keep the dime... so happy to be learning this one...

The gauge pick you use makes a huge difference to the quality of the sound, thin pick = thin sound, thick pick = big smooth sound . I use 3mm Dunlop Stubby triangular picks, playing live or recording. What I do, I smooth the ends rounder with either emery paper or some sandpaper and finish it off with fine sandpaper or emery paper, so the ends are nice and smooth and rounder. I seem to get a nice smooth sound strumming and lead playing . Try it out. Takes a while to adjust to the thick gauge, definitely try a 3mm round edge pick and shape the ends more rounder and smoother. With the thickness of the pick and the shaping of the ends, you will get a quality smooth sound. I am going to try a 5mm pick and do the same, round and smooth the ends of the pick, see what occurs, see if it's any different.

Did you know that jim Croce was the main reason i felt compelled to learn guitar, when I heard him playing a live gig in Dublin, eay back in the early 70s, sadly he died tragically shortly after his visit to Dublin. So I'm a huge fan of Mr Croce, and am delighted to try adding this classic to Lee Roy Brown and Time in a bottle. Thanks again Laure, you are indeed a very inspiring teacher.

tip for other beginners! ... substitute the Bm for the Bm7 (6 close, 5 string 2nd fret, 4 string open, 3 string 2nd fret, 2 string open, 1 string 2nd fret). An easy chord, sounds so so similar to Bm and sets up perfectly for the progression (G,Am etc)
