Hard to believe how young they were when they recorded this,the muscianship already top notch,this is my favorite of all the early opeth songs.

Not related, but if you listen to Johan's Bass at Morningrise. Oh boy. His playing is way ahead of its time.

My favorite album. Its fucked up bc Mikael has said over and over again that they still never found their sound after the first two albums (Orchid and Morningrise) and that both were absolutely horrible. I think they are goat vocals for him. Screaming/growls are insane

It is unmistakably mid-nineties black metal, but already Opeth were showing signs that they had potential for so much more. Amongst the ubiquitous black metal blast beats and lugubrious riffs, Mikael's beautifully clean vocals blossom like a flower on a twisted black vine. The album cover is very fitting.

How on earth can you categorize this as black metal? Show me one other black metal that sounds anywhere close to this?
@jmcsquared18
@jmcsquared18 Жыл бұрын
@@andreasr7058 I keep hearing people say that Orchid and Morningrise were black. Tbh I never listen to black metal, I'm squarely in the death metal camp so I barely even know how to judge what counts as black metal.

this is a mix of melodic death metal and straight up NWOBHM. only thing that makes it kinda black metal is the vocals.

@@jmcsquared18 Morningrise feels a bit more Black I think mostly because of the particular vocal style Mikael was using in that album. Has that sort of dry guttural sound

Just yesterday I started watching through your Opeth reaction playlist, and now there is a new one :) You really did almost all the best tracks by them of their most favourite albums between "Orchid" (1995) and "Watershed" (2009). Here is a list of the best Songs by them you have not done so far: Orchid(1995): - Under the weeping Moon (my favourite of this album!) Morningrise(1996): - The Night and the Silent Water (much better then "Nectar") - To bid you farewell (First Ballad Opeth has ever written) My Arms your Hearse(1998): -One of my fav records, you did all the great tracks except: "The Amen Corner" Still Life (1999): - White Cluster Blackwater Park (2001): - Harvest (another Ballad) - The funeral Portrait Deliverance (2002): - A Fair Judgement (absolute masterclass, this one is probably in my top 10, maybe top 7 Opeth Songs) - Wreath - By the Pain I see in others (even though Mikeal Akerfeldt doesnt like it) Damnation (2003): You only did "Closure" of this album, this doesnt do this record justice, even though it is completely mellow, it is absolutely beautiful! My favourites: -To Rid the Disease - Windowpane Ghost Reveries(2005) - Beneath the Mire Cheers!

The best Opeth songs, like this take you on a journey, and yes the guitar picking is just awesome, some Opeth songs are long, but everything still have its place, i feel its not because Opeth just fill stuff in their songs, it all have to be there, to create this atmoshere of the song, and make this journey..

3:21 Dat guitar tone is Jackson RR, Marshall JCM800 Lead50W and either boosted by Boss hm-2 or Ibanez metal screamer pedals. All the gear is listed in Opeth website. Interestingly it is the same exact guitar gear as in Morningrise, the production and mixing is just so much better for Orchid
